W' .,.-, Q 1 -f.ff'.V 1' 2. 0 il 3' S ENT sei-NTEN ff SUP f' A x. f Dear Students of Holding Institute: Of the many values offered to you here, nothing is more lasting, more personal, more challenging, and more fruitful for the meaning of living, for your own happiness and sense of well-being, than that of FRIENDSHIP. A friend is a person who shares withus a tie of mutual understanding and respect, who is constantly seeking for and protecting our own best interests, as we do for his, who constantly seeks to inspire us to our best creative efforts, and is never satisfied with an inferior effort on our part. A friend is one who does not condone or approve the things we are tempted to do which are destructive of our own personalities, and who will not share in any action which tends to depreciate us as persons. The days at Holding are a most valuable time for the forming of true friendships which will last a lifetime. We who form the Faculty seek to be remembered, most of all, as your friends who seek to guide you in your learning because of our friendship with One whom we call the Christ. God's richest blessings on each and all of you . H- j Sincerely, -

This line from a famous hymn has especially challenged me in various moments of the past year. This is a militant era. Mankind is segregated into factions. One finds himself at odds with his friend, his family, his neighbor. Move- ment upon movement emerges into the mainstream of life and then exits with quiet, futile hostility. Toward what end do our militant legends march - and bearing what banner? Students of Holding Institute, the possibilities of your lives are un- limited. You have inspired me with your courage, daring effort and accomplishment, You hold the key to the mystery of the meaning of life today in whatever little area you are destined to serve. The challenge for you today is to eye the door of Truth and march toward it. Will the key you hold open the door toward which you march? With whom do you march? Under what banner do your footsteps blend with the pulse of the future? May we say together with the stalwart Joshua, challenging the militants of the Old Testament, Choose you this day whom you will serve . . ., but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
