FCDUIQTI-l FGRM l-IISTGIQY Irrst I must tell you how I came across the wrrtrngs whreh follow It was about two years ago when Srmon McGrundy hrst came to our house He was a strange old fellow He hardly eyer left hrs room, and so rt was my' duty to brrng up hrs food I always had to knock at the door so that Mr IVleGrundy would haye trme to hrde the preerous rnanuserrpt upon whrch he was eonstantly workrng He guarded these papers more carefully than 1 mrser hrs gold One day, howeyer, I knocked rn yarn After contrnurnv my knocks for a few moments, I opened the door slowly To my horror I perceryed Srmon, slouched oyer hrs desk elutehrng the marruserrpt rn hrs death grrp After callrng Mother, I rmmedrately started to look for hrs wrll My seareh was frurtless, and so Mother, herself saw that the old man reeeryed a decent burral then, rn lreu of the rent whrch the old man had not pard Mother took possessron of hrs bundle of papers And so rt was that we came rnto possessron, rims so strangely, of the Hrs tory of the Fourth Form, Holderness, 1941 I well remember my amazement upon first glancrng through the papers and aecompanyrng photographs of thrs work The photographs themselyes aroused rn me a startled Gad' after Gad' , and after I had hnrshed yrewrng these, I turned my attentrons to the manuserrpt Shak rng the dust from rts eoyers, and my self shakrng lrke a leaf I proceeded to gltnee through the pages bueh paragraphs as these were the ones that greeted me The shryerrng Thrrd Former, ably escorted by a group of Iourth Formers, meekly walked toward the shower In yarn he sought refuge Wrthrrr a moment he would be thrown rnto the rey downpour The Fourth Formers grasped hrm and, amrd crres of trrumph he was thrown, elothes and all, rnto the shower, After flrckrng on the lrght, the unfortunate owner of the room took one look at what was before hrm and then emrtted a cry comparable only to that of an rnfurr ated bull Lrttle wonder, for rn one corner of the room hrs bed stood, lrterally strrpped of books were also among the debrrs In faet, not one thrng remarned rn rts rrghtful plaee He could reach but one eonelusron Some representatrye of the Iourth Iorm had yrsrted hrm, Not all of the paragraphs howeyer, contarned as gory faets as these Some told of partres, results of wrnnrng rnspectrons Others told of jam sessrons when the arr was nlled wrth the strarns of Beat Me Daddy and of accompanyrnv hands and feet I next found a small packet around whrch was tred a large red rubber band As I searched among rts contents, I came first upon a lrst entrtled Athletrc Teams Here was mentron of the actrye partrcrpatron of the Fourth Form Actrye rndeed I thought for hardly a team was wrthout some Fourth Formers Another tattered paper I soon saw, was an honor lrst Here agarn were Fourth Formers rn top posrtrons I could not help thrnkrng to myself how aetrye these fellows were Why eyen the Debatrng Club contarned some of thrs form' Unfortunately poor Mr McGrundy neyer reached that part whreh rn most books sum marrzes the precedrng materral, and so I feel that rt rs my duty to hrm to attempt rn a humble manner to do thrs From Mr McGrundy s materral, I gather that the Fourth Form was, I dare say, a farr bunch of boys The pranks whrch Srmon McGrundy relates show them to haye been red blooded, but not mean or destructrye From therr reeords rn both athletrcs and scholastrc achreyement, they seem to haye done rather well At least they appear to haye been rn the thrck of thrngs most of the trme rf not, alas, all of rt My only regret rn wrrtrng thrs rs that rt rs rmpossrble for me to rnclude the whole of Mr Srmon McGrundy s book, or rntended book I would lrke to mentron, howey er, that there rs a consolatory factor Mother has Just reeeryed a letter from the publrshers, Snosly and Noad, who haye agreed to publrsh the McGrundran manuscrrpt The enelosed cheek was enough to coyer Mr McGrundy's rent by a wrde margrn, and Mother was rn town only thrs afternoon to see about a new baby carrrage for my lrttle srster, Anne .
