BASKETBALL 1939 no Basketball is a great sport but it IS lost in a country of ite and snow Basketball re turned to Holderness this year as a major sport after an absence of three years Of the fourteen men who came out for the first practice on November 21 only a few were experi enced players these were Rusty Orton a forward with three years high school varsity ex perience Dick Leverich an import from the deep south with two years of play at Ham mond High School Will Huntress playing manager of last years independent team and Dave Ward another player from the independent family As the season progressed the team consisted of Dick Leverich Mike Machell Rusty Orton Dave Ward Grant Meloon Dean Blackwell W1llHuntress Art Bliss ohn Armstrong and Earl Damon These men deserve a lot of credit for their determination and fight The Hrst game was away with Tilton and they proved to be too much for our small inexperienced team Tilton won by a score of forty one to fifteen Disheartenmg as was this defeat the team worked harder and definitely improved The second game was our Hrst home game with the New Hampton V as our opponents New Hampton had the advantage of height on every man but nevertheless it was a good game The final score was New Hampton JV thirty eight Holderness nineteen Our next game was with Plym outh High School here Plymouth won this game thirty one to thirteen The Kimball rather slow game without much scoring on either side The final score was twenty eight to twenty one This was a difficult match to lose as we really out played them as far as hand ling the ball was concerned but we were unable to find the hoop On our first return match which was with Plymouth the mid winter House Party took its toll and the team slumped After three quarters of very careless playing we finally let loose in the last period but it was too late The final score was Plymouth twenty nine Holderness sixteen Probably our best game of the season was our next which was a return match with New Hampton JV on their court Our playmg was hard and consistent and it was really only by man power that we were beaten Due to sickness our squad was reduced to seven of which three Rusty Orton Dick Leverich and Dave Ward played the entire game It might be added that these three players were the iron men of the team playing every minute of every game New Hampton however was able to put three complete teams on the floor and consequently we could not match the pace The score was New Hampton V 28 Holderness 24 Up until this t1me the team had been functioning Without an official captain either Orton or Ward being appointed by Mr udge to act as captain just before each game Before the next game Dave Ward was elected captam The last official game of the season was played in Hanover against Clark School Clark proved to be slightly better and won by a score of 30 to 21 In a last effort to have one win the basketball team challenged the hockey team to a post season game of basketball It is better not to mention the score for the sake of the hockey team which had S0l1C1tCd a few rxngers but the basketball season closed with one victory A , . . y .- Q ' y . BASEBALL :Quo After having two games with Kimball Union and New Hampton called because of wet grounds the Holderness baseball squad on May 1 finally opened its season by de feating Tilton JV 3 2 It proved many things about which everyone in school had his doubts Could Steve Knowlton pitch? Last year he was a catcher This year because of a lack of hurlers Steve was converted This game showed that Steve could pitch The school s three runs came in the fourth when Rusty Orton was hit for the second time by a pitched ball and Catcher Kuehner singled Steve Knowlton then came up and slammed the first ball pitched over the center fielder s head for a home run The second game was played on home ground but was lost to Brewster 10 8 Knowlton tried for his second win but many errors were committed behind him and ten hits were made Holderness scored Hrst in the last half of the opening frame Huntress walked Thayer flied out Lev erich singled but was forced out by Orton and Huntress scored on Kuehner s single In the second inning Holder ness after two men were out made five runs McKee and Huntress walked and Thayer singled driving in McKee When the right fielder lost the ball Thayer went to third and Huntress scored Leverich struck out but the catcher dropped the last strike and Dick was safe at first Orton doubled and on the throw in the third baseman missed the ball and Leverich and Orton scored In the Hfth inning Knowlton singled and went to second when Childs walked to third on I-Ioislngtons mheld out Huntress singled scormg Knowlton In the sixth innmg Orton hit a home run over the center fielder s head which ended the scormg for Holderness Next time we face Brewster we should beat them if we don t commit so many errors.
