FOOTBALL The openm dav of the 1939 football season brought some thrrty odd players out on the fleld eight of whom were lettermen and twelve others yeterans Due to a number of wet days the team dld not get nn the full amount of practice however the sp1r1t and eagerness to learn news plays and work together as a team made up for the deficlency ln scrxmmagmg Durlng the annual rally the mght before the hrst game Rex Saunders and Godfrey Armntage were announced as co captalns and then each member of the startlng hne up was announced and cheered by the student body Intent on upholdnng the honorable record of the preyxous squad that of not havmg been beaten or scored upon the hrst and second teams went to Kxmball Unxon Academy on Oct 6 for the hrst gmme Those nn posxtlon for the startxng hne up were Dxck Lever 1ch le George Becker lt ack Sloane lg Bill Gallupe c Hedley Young rg Arthur Ben nett rt Godfrey Arnntage re Steve Knowlton q b Rex Saunders rh Peter McKee lh Dane W'ard fb It took the team one quarter to SIIL up the opponents and then commence to drlye Saunders behlnd a curate mterference crossed the llne for sux points whnch was fol lowed by the extra pomt converted by Knowlton on a l1ne buck Shortly afterwards Ward shook loose and ransed the score another s1x pomts whlch was followed by a successful extra pomt In the last quarter Bob Davns substltutlng for Knowlton earned the ball across WhlLl'l made a hnal score of 20 O Due probably to the success of the K U A game Holder ness was lackxng nn splrlt agalnst a comparatlvely weak New Hampton squad on the home held The game whleh ended 1n O O deadlock was just a serles of frustrated scorxng oppor tunntnes Durxng the followmg week the lnnesmen can well remember the penalty they paxd under the dlrectlon of Coach Smnth The thlrd game was another scoreless txe thxs tlme against Tnlton on thenr Held The Holderness team was slightly out wexghed by a powerful Black and Yellow eleven who used straxght power plays through the l1ne as the1r most efhelent weapon The game on the whole was a dlS3.ppO1I1IlDg one snnce Holderness had the ball ID scornng posltlon at least three tnmes The T1lton game succeeded ln domg one thmg however 1n that ll fully convmced the team that a v1ctory or nothlng would be suitable agalnst Kennett Hlgh the followmg Week Due to a ramstorm the game was post poned to Monday October 30th The Blue and S1lver clad stalwarts took to a rather shp pery field and from the knck off to the closlng whnstle there was a definnte determlnatlon to gam a NICIOFY agalnst a smooth runnxng Kennett team The fight shown m thls game was to be reeognxzed as somethmg that had never been seen before dur1ng the season because even though there were few substntutlons the team kept up 1ts hard drlvlng pace throughout the full tlme Early ID the game Knowlton shpped a beautxful pass mto the hands of Arml tage for the hrst tally whlch was followed by an unsuccessful attempt to get the extra pomt The next score was made by Saunders on an mtercepted pass whxch was followed by three unsuccessful attempts to get the extra pomt Soon afterwards due to a well executed reverse by McKee Saunders scored for another sux polnts The now desperate Kennett team threat ened serxously late nn the game when they pushed the1r way mto touchdown terrltory Thenr threats became a reahty when on a hard end sweep they crossed the Holderness goal lme to break a record of not being scored upon for elght straxght games However the game was a well deserved vnetory endmg wlth an 18 6 score The Brewster game was played to a scoreless t1e the followmg week on home terrntory Throughout the game was played on even terms wnth the home team possessmg a shght edge through the1r smoother runmng attack Both teams alternated 1n takmg the OHCHSIVC al though nexther was able to penetrate far wxthnn nts opponent s ten yard lme The dlsappomt cr r D 1 4 l 7 v y 7 - 1, v x 1 Y Iv Q .... .
