I-IISTCDRY OF THIRD FQIQM Last September eleven boys were enrolled rn the Thrrd Form Of these eleven nrne were new boys Sandy Cobb and Gordon Smrth berng the only old boys Dave Langstaff had to undergo a mastord operatron and was unable to come for openrng day As soon as our books were bought we were ready to begrn the school term of 1939 40 It wasn t long before Coach Hrnman called out candrdates for the football squad Frye Thrrd I'ormers were out for the squad They were Gordon Smrth who won hrs letter ohnny Chrlds Phrl See Don Campbell and Drck Warner The latter bore the trtle of scrub manager whrch drdn t grve hrm much prestrge among the players As fall passed to wrnter the calls for hockey basketball and skrrng were sent out We were represented on two of these teams They were the skrrng and basketball teams Johnny Chrlds Phrl See and Ted Leland proved to be our skrers whrle Dave Rrchards became basketball manager Wrnter went qurckly mto sprrng and then came the calls from Mr Lynch and Mr Abbey baseball and tennrs coaches respectrvely Ted Leland Dave Langstaff and Sandy Cobb are out for the tennrs squad and Phrl See johnny Chrlds Don Campbell -Irm de Gozzaldr and Drck NX'arner are out for baseball has been small Two Thrrd Formers have been on rt farrly consrstently QDrck Warner and Pete Woodbury We are proud that Dave Langstaff made the DIAL wrth one of hrs short storres Everyone rn the form rn connectron wrth our Englrsh course had to wrrte a short story Langstaffs Chrnese Interlude was the best and we were very much pleased at rts entrance rnto the DIAL Drck Warner served as a typrst for the DIAL Perhaps we haven t set any rec ords rn our studres but we are proud that no one has farled In other actrvrtres Dave Langstaff and Dave Rrchards have proved to be our actors Rrch ards appeared rn Eugene O Nerll s play In the Zone and he rs also gorng to appear rn Pma ore Langstaff appeared rn the French play Le Testament He wrll appear as josephrne one of the leads rn Pmafore In conclusron we would lrke to express our apprecratron to the masters who have taught us so well thrs year At trmes we have been slow to comprehend but the masters through therr patrence helped us greatly Although we haven t been record breakers we hereby challenge the Second Form of thrs year to equal our record next year , . . t , . , . , - u . , I . , . y J 5 l Y ' , r . , Y 5 ' ' ' Y Y . . . ,. . . , . . . , - a a S 1 3 I 3 Now, let's turn from sports to scholastic matters. SECOND FORM HISTORY The Second Form thls year started out wrth sxx boys one of whom was here last year They are Chrlstopher Rnley from Flushmg New York Warren Vrckerman from New York Cxty Davxd Haseltme from Belmont Mass Burt Lowe from Scarsdale N Y Allan Greenlaw from Dover New Hampshxre and Dean Blackwell from Mxllns Mass Some of these hate been takmg actlve part nn sports Burt Lowe was assxstant scrub man ager or water boy for our football team Whrle delxvermg water durmg one of our home games he tr1pped and fell sprllmg the water over the held Durmg the football game be tween the B football team and the Plays Eders Vickerman Lowe Blackwell and Rlley were to be found on the bench as substxtutes Wlnter came wlth sknng basketball and hockey on the sports lnst Blackwell Lowe and Vlckerman all went out for basketball Lowe played hockey as second goahe At the Wmter Sports Banquet Blackwell and Lowe recelved class numerals Burt played rn the Alumm hockey game and also ln some scattered CCC games whnle Blackle played nn the Alumm basketball game On some afternoons Rxley would help Mr Wlles but not out of the kmdness of hrs heart Greenlaw went out for basketball manager but finally gave xt up A few days before the annual Wxnter Mountaxn Day we had a newcomer Robert Lov ett from Brooklme Mass Spr1ng came brmgmg baseball and tenn1s Lowe Vlckerman and Blackwell represent the Second Form nn baseball Porky Greenlaw chases foul balls as one of the assxstant managers Our seven members of the Second Form mnght easrly make up the seven dwarfs m Snow Whzte and the Seven Dwar s Mr Abbey our dorm master benng Snow Whlte Greenlaw can start the llst as Dopey He IS always almost asleep 1n class usually just day dreammg He wxll react about Hve mrnutes after the master has spoken to hlm Rlley IS the perfect nmage of Grumpy When he IS wrong he wrll say drsgustedly Oh well Im all wrong and you re all rnght' Oh' I gne up' Haseltme wlth his terrrfic cough IS Sneezy Vlckerman ns Happy be cause he always has a smrle on hrs face but he can be serlous Blackle the brams of the class IS Doc all he needs IS a pa1r of glasses Lowe who rs also fond of day dream1ng ln class or smokmg h1s pencll IS Sleepy Lovett who hardly ever speaks unless he IS spoken to by a mas ter and then feebly Yes slr IS Bashful For the old Wrtch we have Godfrey Armltage who when Mr Abbey IS not at home wnll shout at 9 15 Get ln bed Vrckerman and Rnley A hour s work Haseltme When Pma ore was announced to be our operetta thns year V1c Burt and Blackle re sponded for the female chorus and later our talented Chrls Rlley was chosen for a lead Llttle Buttercup .
