The Q21 The are OJ The U0 The shape of the face is closer to the perfect oval type. hair style is correct. With the high forehead, the bangs correct. nose is closer to correct size for her type of face. mouth is very good. The Song of the Blue and White tTune - School Days J First Verse Waiting for you, our old warriors, Waiting for you, we'll say, Brace up your nerve, it's now time to serve, Win glory and fame today. Sail up the old field of triumph, Hang up a prize winning score, We'l1 look up and see our glory to be While singing our song once more. Chorus Blue White, Blue White, Loyal through the great fight Colors that never will fade or die, Float like a rainbow of hope on high, Now we know Well what we will do, Salute our colors, White and Blue And then glory shall shine and all outvie While we are in Holden High. Second Verse Triumph shall follow us ever, Victory crown us with fame. Praises we'll sing for many long days: Our heroes have won the game. March through the blue arch of victory, Hold up the prize cup we've won, And all form a line for a grand old time, And boost for Holden as one. ' ' ' - - M mis fag fs -f'-w--f-w-----f-0-- - - im- ' Senior Activities These Twelve Years Class History - by Ted Morhart As a motto, we the Senior Class of 1957 chose We Make A Living By What We Get, We Make A Life By What We Give In this graduating class of 1957 there are only nine who began the First Grade in Hol- den. However, without the help of the re- mainder of the class we would not have been able to live up to our motto or to have had a successful graduating class. At the beginning of our first year of school in Holden there were 34 students enrolled in our First Grade Class. We progressed from a good start with Miss Josephine Long as our instructor. She started the following on the right path in the fall of 1945: Gail Dellflasters, Betty Bailey Know Mrs. Clifford Pricej, Carolyn Hobbs, Peggy Potter, Peggy Simmerman, John Tevis. Jerry Wallace, Bob Martin and Ted Morhart. Before the year 'was over Peggy Simmerman moved to another school. We learned a great deal that first year under a great instructor. Miss Cena E. Farnsworth resumed the ed- ucation of the students in the fall of 1946. That second year Annetta Hancock enrolled with us and Gail DeMasters left us the latter part of the term. Miss Farnsworth had a great task to perform that year and she did a wonderful job. The Third Grade began in the fall of 1947 with Mrs. Marjorie Carney officiating This year seemed like a half way mark and all of us were given a cheerful helping hand by Mrs. Carney. No new pupils were added this year. Miss Crystal Davidson became our capable instructor in the fall of 1948 for our fourth year in school. This year Jane Fisher, Nancy Kassing and Reed Hough were added to the present class. Miss Davidson was a great help to us that year particularly in helping us with our long division. The fall of 1949 found Glenn Thomason, Kelly Warren and Charlotte Warner with us to begin our fifth year in the competent care of Mrs. Marie Hampton. Mrs. Ted Boosinger brought our grade school education to a close and successfully and patiently prepared us for Junior High School. Doris Jean McLanahan joined us that sixth year. In the fall of 1951 we entered Junior High School with much the same feeling as when we entered the First Grade in 1945. Mr. Gene Seevers was our very capable and considerate sponsor. Jerry Martin, Stanley Stark and Ronald Dennis became members of the class at that time Mrs. Virginia Moore became our sponsor and guilding hand in the fall of 1952 when we began the eighth year of studies. Many joined us as classmates that year. They were as fol- lows: Alice Raber, Sue Hunter, Bob Bedsaul, Henry Clark. Lloyd Hammond, Robert Ramey, Joe Rockwell, Wallace Sumner, Nancy Tim- mons, Richard Wagoner, and Lois Yoder. We were also happy to welcome back Peggy Sim- merman and Gail DeMasters. At last we were Freshmen in High School with Mr. Theodore Cast as our able sponsor. This year with elective courses we worked toward more specialized fields. During that year, beginning in the fall of 1953, Larry Shanks and Patsy Wright entered our ranks. In 1954 as Sophomores with the capable Mr. E. L. Huddlestun as sponsor, we worked still harder toward our goal. New pupils were Ruth Pope and Marvin Shockley. h 1955 found us very close to the end of high school as we became Juniors that year. With the kindly assistance of Mrs. Howard Volge- nau and Mrs. Sam Ropp, we had a successful class year, including the preparation of the Junior-Senior Banquet and our play, The Babbling Brooks . Ray Fitzgerel and Phyllis Ann White became members of our class that year. Mrs. James Krockenberger and Mr. Evert Buxton have been our very wonderful and, perhaps, overburdened sponsors this, our last year. Under the direction of Mrs. Krockenber- ger, we presented three one-act plays entitled Shock of His Life , Many Happy Returns and You'd Never Think It . We also enjoyed the Junior-Senior Banquet, Senior Day at C.M.S.C., and Senior Day in Kansas City. Bet- ty Comer joined us at the beginning of our senior year. On behalf of the Senior Class of 1957 I would like to thank each and every one of the patient people who helped us climb to this position of High School Graduates. With the help they have given us we feel that we can lead good and useful lives for our community, state and country. D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award The D.A.R. Good Citizens Committee, for the promotion of better citizenship, conducts nationwide contests open to girls in senior classes of accredited high schools. From three names presented to the Senior Class by the Faculty, Jane Fisher was elected to receive the Good Citizenship Award given by the Eliza- beth Randolph Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Jane was selected on the basis of the following qualities. 1. Dependability, including truthfulness, loy- alty, and punctuality. 2. Service, including cooperation, courtesy, and consideration of others. 3. Leadership, with personality, self-control, and ability to assume responsibility and leadership. 4. Patriotism, unselfishness interest in fam- ily, school, and communilty and nation. Jane and her mother, Mrs. J. W. Fisher, were guests of the Daughters of the American Revolution at a meeting April 12, 1957 at the home of Mrs. Albert Holtz. It can reveal the hidden and make known the secret. It can tell you whatever your soul desires to know. I have been asked to search in its magic dep- ths until I discover the future that awaits the members of our class, so soon to take their sep- arate ways and maybe never be reunited. The mist is clearing. A village scene ap- pears. I see a church. The bells are ringing. It is Sunday morning. The people are com- ing to church. I see the minister - fine look- ing man, and by his side walks his wife. Her face is turned away. I cannot see who it. is. They are warmly greeted by their congregation Now she turns. I see her face. It is Lois Yoder. She looks very happy and appears to be an ideal ministeris wife. The scene changes. I see a large airport. A plane has just landed. A group of people are excited over the appearance of the great and foremost novelist, Betty Comer. She is surrounded by literary critics and newspaper reporters. I recognize one of the reporters as Ruth Pope. Ruth always did like excitement and I think she will find plenty of it in news- paper reporting - There is a plane ready to take off for Hong Kong, the site of tl1e next Olymphic meet. Let us see if any of our classmates are going to be Olymphic stars. T do believe I see Jerry Mar- tin and Marvin Shockley boarding that plane. They always were outstanding athletes. I Wonder who that cute little airline hostess is. I do believe it is Phyllis White. I'll bet she takes good care of her passengers! Here comes the pilot and co-pilot now. They look famil- iar, and they should because they are none other than Joe Rockwell, and his capable co- pilot, Wallace Sumner. They are pausing to talk with the mechanics, the one with red hair just couldn't be anyone but Glenn Thomason, and the other is Lloyd Hammond. With these capable men in charge of this plane nothing could go wrong - or could it?? Now the scene shifts to the display room of a large clothing establishment. A fashion show is in progress, the dresses shown are designed by Patsy Wright. As I watch the models strut about the platform, I notice two of them are exceptionally graceful. They are Doris Jean lVlcLanahan and Gail DeMasters. I wonder who else is watching this fashion show. There is. Alice Raber, that new Broadway ac- tress, and with her is Nancy Timmons, her personal manager. With a manager like Nan- cy, Alice will really go places! And beside them is Jane Fisher who is married to a multi- millionaire. She probably is explaining her technique to Nancy and Alice. Now we are in the office of a large estab- lishment. That efficient looking secretary is Charlotte Warner. She has just been voted Secretary of the Year. Here comes her bossg and I do believe that it is Ted Morhart The future is really full of surprises, isn't it? As this scene fades another takes shape. It appears to be a broadcasting room of a rad- lovstation. A young man is crooning into a microphone, and I recognize that voice as Bob Mart1n's. He is the new singing sensation, that the teenagers are wild about. That must be the producer of this pro- gram standing over there waving h1s arms. It can't be, but it is - it's Larry Shanks. A smartly dressed woman is introducing the next program. She is Nancy Kassing. It looks as if a distinguished gentleman is going to make a speech. She introduces him as Senator Stark. If I remember correctly, Stan- ley was always making speeches in class. The mists blot out this scene and now I see two people robbing a bank, here comes a policeman. No, the bandits aren't former class-- mates, but the policeman is, he is Richard, Wagoner. Here come the president of the bank and his bookkeeper. The policeman seems to know the President of the bank and he should because he is Robert Ramey, and his book- keeper is Annetta Hancock. Again the mists close down. Now that things are clear again I see that this is a scene in Hollywood. We are in an office. A woman is talking on the telephone. I recognize the voice as that of Sue Hunter. Evidently she is that new Hol- lywood columnist whom the stars run from! Sue always did get a l.ot of enjoyment out of talking. She is talking to someone by the name of Carolyn. It must be our classmate, Carolyn Hobbs. She and her husband must have settled in Hollywood. Now I see a race track. The race for the Champion of the midget car races is about to start. It looks like John Tevis, Bob Bedsaul and Jerry Wallace are among the ones competing for the title. They always did like to live dan- gerously! As I look at the many spectators gathered to see this exciting event, I recognize Henry Clark, now Manager of Musser's Dry Goods Store and Kelly Warren, Business Manager of the Warren Lawn Mower Service, and Ray Fitzgerel, a typist in the Mechanics Depart- ment at T.W.A. A jet plane zooms overhead doing daring stunts. Now the pilot is writing his name. It is Reed Hough. Now I see a lovely college town. There is a vast crowd in the chapel. A new president of the college is. being inaugurated. It is the first woman president and, of course, it is none other than our studious schoolmate, Peg- gy Simmerman. Now we are attending the Presentation Ceremony of the Award of Homemaker of the Year to Mrs. Clifford Price, known to her classmates as Betty Bailey. Her best friend, Peggy Potter is watching. She is happily married also. The sun sets and the light fades gradually. A purple haze covers everything. The crystal clears and I can see no more. Valediciorian Parents, faculty, and friends: This stage is set for a scene similar to this every year. Many high school graduates have reached this turn in the highway of life. To many of you this is just a casual occa- sion, but to us it is a great milestone in our lives. The closing of our senior year is only the beginning of our adult lives. Our class chose as its motto: We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give. As we travel along this well-worn high- way, we realize that we have done a great deal toward getting that which will help us live a full life. We are now finishing the foundation of our preparations for the problems that we are to meet. During the past twelve years we have been setting the standards by which we will live. Our parents and teachers have been re- sponsible for this molding of our characters, and it is to them that we want to say, Thank You . Their training will give us the courage to accept the challenges of life, to approach each problem thoughtfully and to strive cheer- fully for the answer. We want to use our talents wisely to gain for ourselves the best things in life. We have healthy bodies. alert minds, and the good wishes of our friends to brighten the road ahead. A life well-lived is a life in which one has given - in many instances, more than he has received. We can expect our tomorrow to be in accordance with our today. Many of us will need further education in order to make a liv- ing in our chosen career, but we can begin now to give what we have - a friendly smile and a helping hand. As has been stated many times, It's a lone road that has no turning . We must be ready for each turn, regardless of what may be around the bend. We are young, but years have no monoply on ambition. We must build a better future upon the foundation we have gained. In closing I would like to quote the last stanza of Roofs by Joyce Kilmer. They say life is a highway and its milestones are the years, And now and then there's a toll-gate where you pay your way with tears, It's a rough road and a steep road and stretches broad and far, But it leads at last to a Golden Town where Golden Houses are. This Is Our Today By Jane Fisher, Salutaiorian Mr. Hirni, Faculty, Parents and Friends: It is my privilege to welcome you to our Class Night Program. In the past twelve years we seniors have worked together, played together and learned together. Soon we shall receive the passports that will start us on the voyage of life. We have received the best that the public schools can offer. This is our today - but what of the fu- ture? In the past, we have relied on our par- ents and teachers for help: now we will be on our own. Some will go on to collegeg others will find jobs, many right here in this community. I believe that each one will prove himself wor- thy of the work and planning that have gone into these years of schooling. We shall certainly not suffer from the lack of problems to be solved. If we can con- tribute to the welfare of our country, then our education will have served its purpose. Tonight you are witnessing a scene of one of America's finest institutions -- the public school system. It is as much a part of our De- mocracy as the Declaration of Independence: it is the very essence of our form of govern- ment. With the completion of our high school studies, we have reached an important mile-- stone in our lives. To our parents, it means we have grown up : to our community, it means that we are well on our way toward as- suming the duties and responsibilities of citi- 'zenship - carrying new ideas, new vigor, and new strength to our nation. For we have learned more than the tra- ditional reading, writing and arithmetic. We have been taught the American way of life. In all of our activities, we have seen Democracy in action, and we leave this school with a con- crete understanding of the principles that have made America great. We know that America's strength lies in her people, and that a strong nation must be well informed. That is the significance of our graduation: and a firm belief in Democracy is our most cherished heritage from Holden High School. Again, it is a pleasure to welcome you to our Class Night Program and to have you share with us these Moments To Remember . Class Song Our Memories Tune Moments To Remember Words by Anneita Hancock The day we entered Holden High, And now the day we say goodbye, We will have these moments to remember. The dances that we had each fall, The banquet, and the Eagle Ball, We will have these moments to remember. Though the years may slowly come and go, And the present disappears, The laughter we were glad to share Will echo through the years. As we leave and say goodbye, We can't forget dear Holden High, And we will have these moments to remember. ,.,.....- ,..........-v-9-efeaf---v-f - .-Q:-::::::::-: --::::1-2:1-w U55 fagfs -:1':1:1 :1:1:t: ':1 '::9 ' Senior Activities Senior Play About 400 people braved the snowstorm to see the three one-act plays presented by the Senior Class of 1957 at the Holden High School Auditorium on Thursday evening, April 11, 1957. The plays were under the direction of Mrs. James Krockenberger. Many Happy Returns took place in the Boyd home on a Saturday morning. It was Dad's birthday, and Mother was determined he should have a quiet relaxed day. Everything went dead wrong. In her enthusiasm, Mother accidently knocked off Dad's glasses and broke them. When Dad handed Mother his pay check, she found a blue slip which meant he was fired. Then to add to their woes, Buddy, their twenty-one year old son, turned up married to the daughter of a family Dad despised. But the marriage turned out to be a blessing, Dad got a wonderful job and Dad finally got his many happy returns of the day. The cast was: Homer Boyd, Dad, Larry Shanks. Clara Boyd, Mother, Carolyn Hobbs. Betty Boyd, fifteen year old daughter, 'Peggy Simmerman. Roberta, seventeen year old daughter, Sue Hunter. Eloise, the maid, Lois Yoder. Mrs. David Holton, a wealthy socialite, Nancy Timmons. . Wanda Holton, her daughter, Nancy Kas- smg. . , You'd Never Think It was a short com- edy and a typical breakfast scene. The cas.t was: The thoughtful husband, Ted Morhart. The equally thoughtful wife, Doris Jean McLanahan. Shock of His Life was an episode in the life in the Maxwell household. The Max- well household including Mother and Dad, who ruled the roost, with seventeen year old Connie, fifteen year old Betty Lou, and scatterbrain Wilbur adding their opin- ions. The other character in the play was Hercules Nelson, a teenage pal of Wilbur. Wilbur and Hercules were planning to at- tend a masquerade party. His mind on the important subject of what to wear, Wilbur jot- ted down telephone messages as they came in for other members of the family. First came a message from the market saying that its present supply of heart was about gone. Then 'the call came from the doctor saying he would stop by about 7:30. And finally the school doctor phoned to say that Betty Lou's cough should be over by 7:45. Vlfhen Wilbur jotted that down he put down coffin instead of Hcoughin' . Mr. Maxwell had been to the doctor that day and was expecting a message in regard to the report on his physical checkup. He practically collapsed when he put all the messages together and read, Heart about gone, will stop at 7:30. Dr. Brown. Coffin should be over by 7:45. He immediately jump- ed to conclusions and his family not realizing what was going on were very unsympathetic with him. In an attempt to bid a dramatic farewell to Wilbur, he gave the scatter-bramed boy the impression that he was going to pri- son. There was a very embarrassed Mr. Max- well when he found out the truth. The cast was: Mr. Maxwell, Bob Martin. Mrs. Maxwell, Jane Fisher. Connie, Alice Raber, Betty Lou, Charlotte Warner. Wilbur, Henry Clark. Hercules, Joe Rockwell. Between plays, musical specialties were presented by Sue Hunter, Alice Raber, Char- lotte Warner, Annetta Hancock, Doris Jean McLanahan, Jerry Martin, Joe Rockwell, Jer- ry Wallace, and Bob Martin. The whole group first sang, Rock Around The Clock , Round and Round and Party Doll . The boys of the group sang, Blue Suede Shoes , Why Baby Why and Butterfly , During the second in- termission the girls dressed in sissy dresses, picture hats and white gloves sang, 'fLucky Lips , Teen Age Crush and A Guy Is A Guy . All musical numbers were accompan- ied by Jane Fisher. f At the close of the program, Stanley Stark introduced Charlotte Warner, Senior Class president, who presented two dozen red roses to Mrs. Krockenberger. Ushers for the evening were Patsy Wright, Gail DeMasters, Annetta Hancock, Robert Ra- mey, Jerry Wallace, Betty Bailey Price and Peggy Potter. Presiclen.t's Farewell By Charlotte Warner Farewell always seems so final. This fare- well is to classmates, teachers, and to this schoo . I would just like to say that I have sin- cerely enjoyed serving as President for the past year. I've enjoyed working side by side with you, my classmates. We have learned that, if we are to succeed, we must work together. The years we've spent here have been full of interesting activities, numerous trials and great responsibilities. Along with our hard work have come many new experiences and never-to-be-forgotten memories. We shall al- ways have a warm spot in our hearts for this school where we'Ve shared so many happy hours together. Yes, This is our Today - But What is our Tomorrow? We are graduating at last! Some years ago this day seemed far-distant. Which way do we go now? We have spent four years in high school discovering our abilities and interests. We have solved many problems, and we hope that we can now intelligently solve the problem of choosing the road which will lead to success and happiness. Is our road to be college, business, the armed services or homemaking? What ever road we choose, let us press on with courage, sincerity, and enthusiasm, firm in the know- ledge that the world has a place for each of us if we will have a genuine liking for people and a willingness to do our share of the world's wor . ' Thank you and God bless you.
