::::.::::::::::::::-::: is-::.::v:: :zz ::r:r: :1 2: :1::1v:rr: Short Wllfe Ups Homecoming Holden High School students were hosts to the Alumni, the Public, the Butler Bears , and the Pep Squad on the night of October 31, 1952, at the annual Homecoming celebration. The Homecoming dance in the high school gym climaxed the football game between the Butler XVhen Doug was expelled from school for fighting because he was teased about his father's being a housewife, Mrs. Butler decided that her place was in the home. So she moved her office into the home and this only added to the mounting state of confusion. As the play came to an end Mr. Butler had had some songs published, Mrs. Butler had moved her office back down town, and the children had W' 1 I l I ls gg iq U ,A pa 1 i 3 so I I - High School Bears and the Holden High School Eagles The game was played on the Holden Chamber of Commerce Field with the Eagles going down to defeat with a score of 26 for Butler and 6 for Holden. At the half time of the football game our crowning of the queen was a delightful perform- ance. The band, standing at attention, made an aisle for the queen, attendants, and their escorts to Walk through from the west side of the field to the east side. Miss XVanda Snare, sophomore, was crowned Queen of Homecoming. She was escorted to the throne by Kenneth Raker and was crowned by co-captains of the football team, Harold Chaney and Jack McXVhirt. The crown was maderof white carnations with a blue H in the center The queen s attendants were Miss Virginia Hough senioi escorted by Dennis Hough and Miss Mary Helen Park Junior escorted by Calvin Warner The irls were biought to the field in John Gia ham s convertible driven by Mike Ford The queen and her attendants Wore mum corsages After the football game everyone assembled in the beautifully decorated gym to continue the evening by greeting old grads and friends Miss Snare and Jerry Kephart started the dance which was concluded about 11 30 P M much to the dis appointment of our loyal and school spirited stu The Pep Squad did a fine Job of decorating the gym using ied white and blue as their color cheme Phe colois of Holden were blue and white and Butlers were red and white Footballs of red construction paper forming a B hung from the south wall with each football containing the name of a Butler Bear and on the north wall forming an H hung blue footballs containing the name of a Holden Eagle Before the Butler Bears went home they were served punch and cookies and as a souvenir each took the football containing his name Needless to ay the Holden girl friends were proudly carrying the Holden footballs During the dance punch and cookies were served Everyone left after having a very enJoy able evening Martha Howard J unlor Play The Junior Class of 1953 presented the play Fathei Was A Housewife on Friday evening November 21 in the Holden High School Auditori um This play was presented under the direction of Miss Lucille Burroughs The play took place in the Butler s living room Mrs Butler, a successful doctor, had turned over her duties of being a housewife to Mr Butler, an unsuccessful song writer Many things added to Mr Butler's problem of trying to be a successful housewife, Doug, his son, was a motorcycle fiend 'and had his troubles with the local police And there was Julie, Doug's twin sister, who tried to keep up with Doug and his friend TVarren decided that their father was a hero and that they would help with the family's problems in the future. Gerald Goacher XVarren Doug's friend and .1 motorcycle addict Calvin WVarner Ser eant Lutzfelder a police officer Robert McKay Mrs Cranfield an impatient patient Jo Elaine Whitfield Mrs Ames a tim d patient Lorene Parker Pat Flanagan the efficient nurse Jean Cameron Mrs Ixorris high school piincipal s wx if Sally Jo McL1n Miss Osborne a business vsoman Patsy Early calvin Peppei a disc Jockey Perry Kassing Cynthia Lewis a Inger Lea Ann Sappington Russell McCannon Awarded State Farmer Degree Russell McCannon secretary of the Holden FFA Chapter was honored Friday evening April 24 1953 at the State FFA Convention in Colum by being raised to the Degree of State Farmer Russell who 1S the son of M1 and Mrs R C McCannon has done outstanding woik in the Holden High School being valedictorian of his class of 1953 which included doing outstanding work in Vocational Agriculture and F F A Starting out with one heifer he has incl eased his herd to three Angus cows and three heifeis and also has twelve ewes as pait of his supervised farming program Russell was treasurer of the local FFA Chapter during his Junior year a member of the livestock Judging team in 19:12 which won '1 I rating at Columbia Other members of the team were Jim Bruns and Loyd Hite This year he won a I rating in the State FFA Farm Mechanics Contest Other members of this team weie Donald 1-Ieltor and Jack Tlrrmons Russell was also chan man of the parliamentary procedure team which paiticipated in the Sub District Contest at lVar iensburg, and won second place in the Johnson County Terracing Contest in 1931 Russell brings the number of State Farmers to the Holden High School to eight Other boys having ieceived the degree of State Faimer aie Noiman Briscoe, Jack Jones, Wendell Daniel, Carl Stumpff, Sam Raber, Kelly Kephait and Jim Bruns . .
