BOYS' VARSITY BASKETBALL Flrst Row Robert Goodnow Robert Clouthrer Joel Decker Anthony Buthray Edward Berry Second Row Mr Huntmgton fcoachj Rxchard Steele fmanagerj Robert Ford Mxchael Morrxssey Gerald Hyland fcaptamj Gary Harrmgton james Wrnght W1llxam Hale fmanager Charles F1tch fmanagerj HOLDEN HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL TEAM The Holden High basketball team wxth three of 1ts five starters from last year returmng to the lme up opened nts season agamst West Boylston The Holden team looked very nmpressnve as xt routed the West Boylston team 66 29 On january 4 the Holden five played nts first Blackstone Valley League game against Westboro and the Holden team clmched the opener wxth a S7 46 vnctory over the Westboro five The team then traveled to Shrewsbury where xt lost a heart breaker The Terners leadmg by 18 pomts at half time managed to get only fifteen pomts nn the last half and were beaten by a set shot from 30 feet out by Granger wnth S seconds left nn the game The Holden Hxgh team obvxously needmg an nmpressnve showlng agamst the Auburn Dandles came through nn the clutch as the season came to an end Although Auburn won they beat the Holden Fnve by only snx pomts Thns was the closest margnn of vxctory for the Auburn team throughout the entxre season The team effort dnsplayed by the Holden club m thxs game assured them a place nn the Clark Tournament The Terners were chosen to partncxpate m thxs event and thelr first opponent was Oxford The Oxford contest proved to be only a warm up game as Holden romped through nt 61 32 In nts second test however Holden was scheduled to meet the hxghly favored Webster team whnch had beaten the Holden Fnve twnce before Agamst these odds the Holden array proved thenr teamwork and pulled away from the stubborn Webster team m the final th ree mmutes of the ame to wm by a score of S1 to 41 The Holden team agam faced the same sxtuatnon as they entered t e Hnals on Saturday mght agamst Shrewsbury The Shrewsbury team had trxpped the Terners twxce xn the regular season but the margm of vnctory nn both games had been only one pomt Despxte the fact Holden was consndered the underdog the Holden five took the floor and played to the best of thexr abnlnty The Shrewsbury team showed a lnttle more hustle and aggressxveness however and came out on top edgmg the Terners 51 to 47 The team of 1953 54 was one of the best teams that have ever represented Holden Hugh If thns same spmt and aggressxveness are shown by the teams of the Regxonal Hngh School thenr success wnll be guaranteed 58 ' 1 9 s v - ' ' v 1 9 r 1 n 9 Ja a - , I y ' - 7 , - . a ' ' a a - r , . , . . , .
