assoclatlons at Holden Hugh School We are saymg Good bye to persons and scenes and actnrtres that have played so rmportant a part m the best wears of our hves YVe now realrze that the breakmg of old tres rs most dlfficult even for us young people whose eyes have already glornhed our future careers We are joyful thls evemng because we have fimshed the work to whxch we set our tremblmg freshman Holden Our regronal hrgh school 15 sytnbolrc of the mterest that Holden has always had nn xts schools As early as 1741 when the town was strll a new community at tts hrst town meeting lt voted to have a readmg and wrrtmg school The schools were held m saruous homes for penods of three months and thrs type of educatron lasted for about two years untrl the town finally appropnated enough money to buxld a school rn the center ot town The buxldmg rs not standmg today but mt was located a short dxstance west of the Town Hall The town frowned on women school mlstresses as we fmd rn the old records whxch reported Put to tote to see lf ye town would grant any of the School Money to a woman school and rt passed ln the nega tlve Durmg th1s perrod the town was dmded mto drs trrcts whrch were called squadrons Included rn money voted to several of these squadrons for the purpose of buxldmg new schools we find b1lls tor the followxng ltems 7 kegs of naxls l gallon NE Rum and Sugar l quart of Rum How these last two ltems entered mto the construc txon of a new school was not elaborated on but therr mcluslon dld not seem to excite any comment from the school commrttee In 1153 the town approprrated twelwe pounds Qabout sixty dollarsj for schools and appomted three drtferent sectlons ot town for thelr locatxon-one ln the west part of town one rn the center and the other rn the east The second school buxldmg ln the center of town bullt about 1824 15 stlll standmg at the corner of the left hand drnve mto the hlgh school though the brrcks of whxch tt 15 constructed are now covered by clap boards One of the old school benches may stlll be seen on the second floor -Xt one tlme m the outlymg dlstrrcts of Holden there exnsted eleven one or two room schools These httle schoolhouses were arranged 1ns1de wlth rows ot benches and when the teacher wlshed to hear the recl tatlon of one of the classes they came torward and took the front seats -Xt thls tlme the selectmen appomted the teachers but later they were selected from the results of tests that w ere taken m hrstorx arlthmetrc phx sxologw and geography Thex were requrred to obtaln a mark ot . , . . .
