HIGH SCHOOL HOLBROOK, MASSACHUSETTS EDITORS EDITOR-IN-CHIEF VIKKI SMITH JTERARY TANYA WINDERS .AYOUT CRAIG WONG ' YPING CINDY MACPHERSON BUSINESS LEANNE POMPEO ADVISORS MR. AND MRS. ROBERT N. KINDELAN 1 IN MEMORIUM Miss you, miss you, miss you; Everything I do Echoes with the laughter And the voice of you. You ' re on every corner. Every old familiar spot Whispers how you’re missed. David Cory SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE Mr. John Moran Superintendent You cannot leave your high school behind. It is now inextricably woven into the fabric of your being. On reflection you will see your experience here has enabled you to take your place among educated people. It has em- powered you to enter a tradition of civility. Participants give “allegiance to the social order befitting a citizen.” They are characterized as playing by the rules, participating in public life, and shouldering some specific shared con- cerns. Strive for success, but not at the expense of others. Make a commitment to the service of others. Accept responsibility for the needs we have in common as members of a community and the human family. It is the royal road to happiness in the only life each has to live. I wish each of you great and good fortune. Above all I wish you the insight that your happiness is assured by a productive life in meaningful work. ADMINISTRATION MR. DONALD P. MAHANOR PRINCIPAL MR. CHARLES LOVERIN ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL MR. J. KEVIN SMYTH ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL 4 OFFICE STAFF MRS. SALLY MINIUTTI SECRETARY MS. BETTE JOHNSON NURSE MRS. HELEN SHERIDAN SECRETARY MRS. CAROL ZIMMER GUIDANCE SECRETARY DEDICATION Each year the ECHO yearbook staff gathers together to decide to whom the book will be dedicated. The staff sets strict standards as to what exemplifies the true meaning of hard-work, dedication to helping others, and generosity with time. The person chosen is someone who embodies each and every one of these qualities. The woman to whom we dedicate this 1 988 ECHO does more for each student in our school than anyone. As freshmen, it is she who provides us with our first look into the frantic world of the guidance offices. As sophomores and juniors she juggles SAT test dates, schedule conflicts, and report card prob- lems. In our senior year, she is absolutely invaluable. What would we do without her to organize us for college and scholarship applications. She patiently answers our questions and helps us to solve our problems with a smile to calm our frantic nerves. It is with pride and pleasure that we dedicate the 1 988 ECHO to Carol Zimmer. Mrs. Zimmer gives so much to everyone — her time, her thoughts, her help and most of all her self, and usually receives only a smile of gratitude in return. 1 6 A MESSAGE TO THE FACULTY During the last four years, Holbrook Junior-Senior High School has undergone many foundation shaking changes. Seventh and eighth graders arrived in the building as we entered our freshman year. Our sophomore year was re- latively quiet, but as juniors a fear of asbestos within the building and the possibility of our having to attend classes in Randolph caused a great deal of unrest. In our senior year, the faculty returned to classes without a contract, and there is now talk of regionalizing with Avon. Throughout this chaos the one constant in our school lives has been our faculty. Above all else they put their ef- forts into teaching their students. They are always there to give sup port and guidance whenever it is needed. Many teachers develop personal relationships through their in- volvement with us as our extra curricular activities advisors. Our teachers are much more special to all of us than in most schools. We would like to offer all our faculty members our sincere thanks and let them know that we feel we will grad- uate from high school more prepared than the average senior because of their leadership. They recently held a fundraiser from which they raised over $1 ,500.00. Their success is due to a dedicated advisor, Mr. Kindelan, their class officers, and the executive board. As a result of their team- work they created a winning banner for home- coming. Obtaining class unity is now the major goal and with this there will be no stopping the Class of 1991 . The Class of 1993 has shown that no barrier can hold them back. Being the youngest students in the school seemed to only motivate this class to be involved in many clubs and athletics, where their presence has been noticed. The enthusiasm of this class can be traced back to their peppy advisor, Mrs. Dorann Lomp Cohen. The youngest addition to HJSHS is showing a great deal of promise in succeeding to keep the school spirit flowing in Holbrook Junior-Senior High School. The Echo staff is comprised of a group of students who throughout the fall and winter get together to compile the mem- ories of the school year into a hardcover book. It is the respon- sibility of this small group to raise the necessary monies through the sale of the books and through advertising and to prepare the book for publication. None of this would be possible without the guidance of two very important people who willingly give up the majority of their free time to advise us. Without question, drunk driving ranks today as one of the nation’s most serious health and safety issues — accounting for an estimated 25,000 traffic fatalities and hundreds of thousands of injuries. Among no group is the problem more severe than teenagers and young adults. SADD was established in 1981 to improve young peoples’ knowledge and attitudes about alcohol and drugs and to help save lives. The Holbrook Junior-Senior High School Chapter of SADD does its best to get the message out. FRIENDS DON’T LET FRIENDS DRIVE DRUNK! Many of these students will advance into the high school chorus in the upcom- ing years. 99 i “What exactly do you mean by laryngi- tis? Last year’s musical was a great deal more than just the music department’s an- nual spring production. A group of very talented students and one outstanding di- rector worked together to put on one of the most difficult, lavish, and popular musicals of our time, Roger’s and Ham- merstein’s, The King and I. The cast drew sellout crowds and received standing ovations for their outstanding perfor- mances. This praise was more than well deserved for all the hard work that went into making this production the finest in Holbrook High School’s history. ' ! The Library Aides fit into this category. They allow us to use the fa- cilities and even pick up after us at times. Their being in the library permits Mrs. Fitzgerald to assist the students in their re- search papers and other li- brary projects. Pat Sampson, Mrs. Helen Fitzgerald, Justin Harris. LAB AIDES Behind every great scien- tist there are many Lab Aides. The duties of lab aides are to set up the apparatus for experiments and to assist with paper- work. If they are not seen in the lab behind green goggles, they can be found behind the door of the fore- boding science closets. This course is both edu- cational and interesting. It was ten years in the making, but the Holbrook High School football team overcame their adversaries and conquered almost all by placing second in the May- flower League Small School division! Thanks to the new coach, Dave Pike, a very skillful and sports-man-like team was created this year.
