HOLBROOK HIGH SCHOOL HOLBROOK MASSACHUSETTS ECHO 1965 DEDICATION We, the class of ‘65’, on behalf of the Echo staff and the student body, proudly dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Robert N. Kindelan. For the past seven years, Mr. Kindelan has worked hard and long to make the book a success. There is a great deal of work and dissapoint- ment involved in the preparation of a yearbook, but he has never complained or lost the conviction that our book would be the best ever. He always puts his duties to the school before his personal wants and needs. He has an outstanding personality and sense of humor. His popular- ity with all the students can readily be seen by the continuous group who surround his desk. Mr. Kindelan, fondly referred to as ‘Mr. K.’, has won the respect and the friendship of all those who have known him. He has worked hard in the past, even more so for the class of ‘65’, and we are sure that he will continue to work equally as hard in the future. Thank you, Mr. Kindelan, for everything you have done for our class. We value your friendship deeply, and we consider you not only a teacher but also a personal friend as well. May God bless you. 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS FACULTY 9 ACTIVITIES 23 SPORTS 49 UNDERCLASSMEN 65 SENIORS 83 ADVERTISING 127 The Echo is a family album. Between its covers, it contains the life of our school for one year. It is an autobiography, but each year the story is different, the faces are different, and the authors are different. This year our story would not have been published without the help and hard work of many people. We of the Echo staff would like to express our gratitude to our advisors: Mr. Kindelan, Mrs. Krastin, and Mr. Cohen, and those not on the staff who have done so much to make the 1964-65 edition a success. 4 STAFF EDITOR-IN-CHIEF TYPING EDITOR ART EDITOR LITERARY CO-EDITORS SHERRY ABRAMS ANNE LIVELY MICHAEL BOCZANOWSKI CAROL KRISHFIELD ALYSON HARVEY ADVISORS ART AND LAYOUT LITERARY MR. IRWIN COHEN PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE In extending my personal congratulations to you as graduates, may I also thank you for your contributions to Holbrook High School during your four years with us. I speak not only for myself but also for the faculty when I say that we feel that you, both individually and collectively, have continued the good work of former classes and have held high the honored name of Holbrook High School. As you leave us for a new phase of your life, please remember that Holbrook High School remains willing to help you in the future if the occasion arises. Build on what you have gained here. Always remember that wherever you go, whatever you do, you will still be a representative of Holbrook High. WILLIAM T. BUCKLEY Principal 6 TO THE CLASS OF 1965: I express my sincere congratulations to you for the successful completion of your public school training. In our democratic society we may avail ourselves of many years of education beyond the twelve years of public education. It need not be a formal type of education. Every experience we meet in daily life presents an opportunity to learn. As you think of the future, think of the words of Charles F. Kettering: “The past is gone and static. Nothing we can do can change it. The future is before us and dynamic. Everything we do will affect it. Every day brings with it new frontiers, in our homes and in our business, if we will only recognize them. We are just at the beginning of progress in eveiy field of human endeavor.” I. D. READE Superintendent of Schools 7 Last September the student body and the faculty of Holbrook High School were intro- duced to Dr. John Santosuosso. Dr. Santosuos- so’s work consists of disciplining the student body and administering to the needs of the school. His efficiency in such matters is aug- mented by his desire to be a good friend to each and every student. We certainly accept him as such. Despite his busy schedule, he always finds time for students who need his assistance. His sense of humor and optimistic outlook serve as a daily source of enlightment. Words cannot express our appreciation for his services, but we sincerely hope that he will enjoy many happy years with us. Ntrs. Elizabeth M. Hartshorn Dr. John Santosuosso Holbrook High School is very fortunate to have the best school secretary on the South Shore. Being both warm and affable, her per- sonality aids her in her daily endeavor to perpetuate a well organized administration. She is a person with a sense of humor and a sporting spirit who always maintains a close relationship with the faculty and the students. 8 Mr. Edward H. Silva GUIDANCE COUNSELOR Miss Elna M. Knutson CHAIRMAN-MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT FACULTY Our 1965 family album would not be complete without a picture of the faculty, for they were responsible for the scholastic and the social life. With the high school evaluation this year, they found themselves knee-deep in committee meetings and extra work, but they still came to our games, concerts, and dances. They served as advisors for our clubs, and they bought whatever the student body sold, especially food. All of these time-consumers were just extra-curricular activities for our teachers, their first responsibility was to teaching. As educators they tried, sometimes in vain, to teach us the value of real thinking and they stimulated our minds, guiding them through a maze of subjects. As a result, they have planted within us the seeds which in years to come will blossom into true knowledge. 9 Miss Rosemary Driscoll ENGLISH Mr. Arthur Cullati BIOLOGY Mr. Rene Bouchard CHAIRMAN-SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT Mr. James Sullivan DIRECTOR OF GUIDANCE Mr. Nathan Chancey SCIENCE Mr. William Fletcher CHAIRMAN-SCIENCE DEPARTMENT ELECTRON energy lEYElS f 7 CXXOO , . AUDIO VISUAL AIDS A special note of appreciation goes to the Audio-Visual Aids Club for the general proficiency with which it performed its services to the school. This organization, under Mr. Bouchard’s supervision, consists of several boys who show an interest in the operation and maintenance of audio-visual machinery. They are found working before, during, and after school in preparation for classes, assemblies, and social functions. Because of their interest in creating a smooth running organization, the Audio-Visual Club contributes to the over-all educational program at Holbrook High. 2 .? Art Staff— ' N. Peterson, A. Mack, L. It was more than a dance, but less than a party— it was just one of those things, so it was called “The Thing”. For a number of years the Echo staff had sponsored the Halloween costume-dance-party-thing and had met success, but this year was the most successful of all the previous years. Live music was provided and prizes were awarded for the best costume in the various categories. “Head and Shoulders, ' you say? All Breck girls are beautiful— or are they? ‘Why don’t you pick one up and smoke it sometime. “We’ve got a giant in our washer.” “That buffered product didn’t work!” And every night the little men came and they said “Mai . . . tex!” “Pain, fatigue, pain, exhaustion, pain, jittery nerves, pain, pain . . Krishfield, Co-Editor; J. Richards, Literary Editor. The Bulldog Bulletin, written by students under the capable direction of Mrs. Prime and Mrs. Brennan, serves as a record of school activities, a calendar of future events, and a collection of opinions from the student body. It also gives to those students with literary and artistic prowess, an opportunity to publish their ideas and works. Those who collect these magazines faithfully throughout their high school career have a mirror which will reflect these memorable years at Holbrook High. 28 D. Peterson, Treasurer; R. Cartullo, President; Mr. Bouchard, Advisor; A. Segal, Vice-President; G. Montgomery, Secretary. STUDENT COUNCIL The student council is organized to act as a liaison between the students and the faculty. Representatives, elected by the individual members of the four classes, discuss new ideas and suggestions. By representing the students, the council provides the basis of a model government in the making. It concerns itself, therefore, with problems of importance to the student body. The activities that the student council, under the advisorship of Mr. Bouchard, has sponsored during this year include: serving on such school functions as Parents’ Night and Op en House; enlarging the candy concession run at the close of school each day with the addition of a book collection; the publishing of the student council newsletter, a handbook comprising the curri- culum and basic school regulations; and conducting the class elections held in September, highlighted by their annual dance, the purpose of which is to con- gratulate the winners. In all this work the student council finds enjoyment and satisfaction at having helped their school, since it acts as the backbone of Holbrook High and the pedestal upon which all other organizations are formed. 30 B. Under the direction of Mr. Francis Buckley, this hard-working group of musicians performed in pre-game and half-time activities during the football season and marched in community parades throughout the year. After the Thanksgiving Football game they focused their attention on music of a more formal nature in preparation for the annual spring and pops concerts. Many members participated in the stage band, and in the state, regional, and New England bands and orchestras which are held annually. This year the band’s program included a general theory class which aimed at improving the members’ understanding of the more intricate elements of musical composition. BAND Mr. Francis J. The group was smaller this year than in previous years, but the members made up for the size with enthusiasm. First on the busy schedule was the Christmas Concert; and while the band played marches in the background, the Glee Club rehearsed carols. Soon afterwards came the Pops Concert and then the Spring Concert. Between rehearsals for these concerts were rehears- als for auditions for District, S.E.M.S.B.A., All-State, and All-Eastern Choruses. The lights burned late in the auditorium and the piano worked overtime. It was hard work that made these performances possible, but this hard work was a pleasure. 35 Row One: G. MEDICAL CAREER CLUB A career in medicine is easily one of the most popular vocations among the members of the student body. The Medical Career Club, with Mrs. Facey as its advisor, is an aid to students who are deciding which branch of medicine they would like to enter. Each year countless trips are taken to various hospitals and nursing schools to explore the opportunities they offer. This year the club sponsored a chocolate sale, which was very successful. The money from this goes toward a scholarship for a deserving senior interested in a career in medicine. The popularity of this club need not be mentioned for its ever-growing size speaks for itself. 36 Row One: D. Hopcroft, C. Harrington, C. Dance, A. Mack, S. Smith, C. Chute, D. Esty. Row Two: E. LIBRARY AIDES This year the library staff has realized its ambition to become a formally organized club. The members of this club perform many duties under the guidance of Miss McCourt. Repairing books, entering periodicals, locating literary materials for students, taking library attendance, and many other equally important services rendered by the Library Aides keep our library running smoothly and efficiently. As part of their program, the Aides enjoyed a field trip into the Boston Public Library. In cooperation with the National Honor Society, the club sponsored the annual paperback Book Fair. 37 Row One: L. Burger, H. Price, F. Kroll, B. Gilbert, A. DiMascio, Publicity Chairman. These are only a few of the fascinating areas that the Math Club at Holbrook High School has diligently probed and investigated. Under the guidance of Miss Knutson and club president, Richard McLean, it is the focal point of the many mathematically minded students, who endeavor to analyze the topics not covered in the daily math class. In accomplishing their main purpose of further developing mathematical potentialities, they continue in an ever increasing quest for knowledge. The Holbrook High Math Team, a member of District Five of the Greater Boston Math League, was successful this year in competition with schools such as Brockton, Braintree, Stoughton, and Quincy. To win a berth on the team, the members took examinations in arithmetic, algebra I and algebra II, ge ometry, and trigonometry. At the meets, competition was keen, but due to the aid of Miss Knutson, their advisor, the members were ready to tackle the most difficult problems. This is the first year Holbrook High School has been represented by a scholastic team as such. Commendations are in order for each of the boys who participated as well as the teachers of the mathematics department. 39 Row One: B. Chmara, P. Lemack, B. Scott, M. Lopez, D. Cain, M. BUSINESS CLUB The Business Club, under the supendsion of Mrs. Prime, is designed to further inform its members about business schools and positions that are avail- able to them upon graduation. An effort is made to invite business men and women as often as possible from business schools and firms to explain more fully the demands of business today. This year field trips were taken to various busi- ness houses, such as the John Hancock Company and the Telephone Company, which gave the members further insight into the business world. Each year, the business club provides a scholarship for a deserv ' - ing student in the business course. 40 Kathie O’Brien, Sherry Abrams, Frances Morani, Mary Joyce, Kathy Wilson, Donna Cocomazzi, Carol Palma, Ruth Bethune. NATIONAL BUSINESS HONOR SOCIETY The National Business Honor Society aims to stimulate students in the business course to show scholarship and initiative in their chosen field. The group which is composed of juniors and seniors who maintain an average of 85% or better in all business subjects and no grade lower than 75% in any other subject strives to impress upon its members the importance of assuming acceptable professional attitudes and showing responsibility so that they might succeed under the pressures of the business world of today. LATIN CLUB Latinis Sociis, the Latin Club, was introduced in 1963, and is now under the direction of Mrs. Krastin. The purpose of the club is to increase the student’s knowledge of the Roman and Greek civilizations and their contributions to the modern world. During the year, the Latin Club investigated Greek literature, listened to recordings of selections from Latin literature, watched movies on Roman themes, travelled through Hades at Halloween, and participated in a Saturnalia celebration in December. 42 Row One: Annette Briand, Linda Tigue, Elizabeth White, Gail Peter Theriault, John Levreault, Roy Abrams. A student belonging to this organization is subject to supreme honor since he has displayed high standards of character, scholarship, leadership, and service which are prerequisites for his induction into the society. Under the supervision of Mrs. Wood, our chapter of the National Honor Society has rendered assistance to the school and community by sponsoring the “Youth In Action Night,” conducting the freshman assembly, acting as guides and aides at the Op en House and Book Fair, and sending Christmas gifts to the children at the New England Home for Little Wanderers. 44 Row One: P. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA The Future Teachers Club, under the supervision of Mrs. Prow, is an organization for those students who plan to enter the teaching profession. This year each member was assigned to a teacher whom he observed in preparation for teaching a class. He assisted his co-operating teacher by helping to prepare the day’s work in any way possible. This program also included those interested in elementary education. Arrangements were made for them to help at the Kennedy School. In addition, club members took trips to various colleges and universities. Although this club has been incorporated for just one year, it promises to be one of the most active organizations at Holbrook High School. 45 DRAMA CLUB The newly formed Drama Club was off to a quick start under the direction of Mrs. Smith. The main purpose of the organization is to give the students an opportunity to visit the theater, and to become acquainted with plays and playwrights. One of the several trips taken was to Tufts University, where all enjoyed lectures and demonstrations on lighting, scenery, costumes, and play material. The members were delighted by the performances of the Charles Playhouse Acting Company and young actors from the Boston Childrens Playhouse. The aid and cooperation of members of the faculty, made a second trip to Tufts possible in November. This time, “Pen, Paint and Pretzels,” the Tufts University undergraduate honorary dramatic society, presented Sean O’Casey’s “Cock a Doodle Dandy.” 46 FRENCH CLUB Row One: C. Fowler, L. Maus, J. The team, led by high scoring co-captains Wayne Hanigan and Bob Hylen, won the South Shore League title and proceeded to play in the Eastern Massachusetts Class D finals in the Tech Tourney. Although the team was at a height disadvantage, a great fast-break combined wdth a resourceful press so often turned the tide of many games which resulted in victories for the Bulldogs. Our stand-out junior Mark Peterson, often playing against taller centers, continually controlled the rebounds. Our crafty guards Tom Murphy and Wayne Holden blended a strict defensive game with key offensive scoring. Paul Whalen was the spark that set many games on fire. The real source of the team’s sucess was the tremendous effort of its coach Mr. John Walsh whose spirit and enthusiasm gave special meaning to every victory. 56 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Row One: M. The prom was to be held in the gym for the first time, and decorating that huge hall seemed quite a task. After months of planning, work commenced. Rocks were carried, pools hunted down, the flats were painted and stapled, and a Buddha was purchased. Then there was the garden to assemble, the throne to decorate, and the ceiling to lower. Finally the pagoda had to be nailed together and painted, and painted again. But by the night of the prom, the gym actually looked like an oriental garden: a place “East of the Sun, West of the Moon.” The dancers seemed to float about in a dream world. The music and talk was soft, for any abrupt movement might break the bubble enchantment of the never-never land which the juniors had created. But all good things must end. At eleven o’clock the bubble began to break as they left the room gathering memories of the lily pond and the lotus-blossomed walls. They knew the gym would never again look the way it did the night of the junior prom. A Message From The Senior Class President “ Ve are not born for ourselves,” the motto which has guided the Class of 1965 through its four years at Holbrook High School, shows the spirit with which we will attack the future. Having been given much by the teachers and the students of Holbrook, we feel that it is now our turn to give. The help and happiness which w ' e have received will be given to other people as we go on in life. Our motto connotes the golden rule and the thought conveyed by President Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you; but what you can do for your country.” Others will seek employment to enrich the lives of their fellow man. Still others will further develop, through additional study, the educational background received at Holbrook High School. History dictates that happiness comes with other peoples’ happiness. The training and the guidance afforded us by the administration, faculty, and friends of Holbrook High School has given the background, both academically and morally, that will be the backbone of our character for years ahead. Knowledge does not stop with graduation and is not bounded by geographical location. The flame kindled through our four years at Holbrook High School will mature to create a deeper interest and curiosity in our future life. The unselfish patience and understanding given by our head class advisor, Mr. John Spillane, and the other members of the faculty is gratefully recognized by the Class of 1965. We appreciate their guidance and accept their challenge to go forth as “Knights in shining chinos.” 83 SENIOR CLASS ADVISORS OFFICERS EXECUTIVE BOARD The members of the class of 1965 are nearing the end of the four best years of their lives. A few years ago, someone said this was one of the best classes to enter Holbrook High. At times, it has been difficult to live up to that statement. The guidance of the faculty and the many hours the students have spent in study have not been in vain. This class will be remembered not only for scholastic ability and athletic accomplishments but also for the spirit with which they have fulfilled every task set before them. The class will soon be separated but each one is well prepared to face the wide world which is waiting for him. They will leave taking with them the everlasting friendships and memories made here at Holbrook High. Row One: L. Hamilton, P. Reade, C. Harrington, M. Smith, K. Frances, J. Towns. Row Two: D.
