In these few pages, we have tried to include each student and his participation in our clubs, sports, and other school activities. Special recognition has been given to the seniors, and to them we extend our sincerest wishes for success and happiness in whatever they endeavor. Students of Holbrook High School here is your yearbook. DEDICATION We, the staff of the “Echo,” in dedicating this yearbook are expressing the feelings of many, both graduates and undergraduates, towards a most remarkable and unforgettable man, Mr. Garland L. Neal. He came here in 1922 and became principal in 1928. Since then he has led many a class through four profitable years with guidance and wisdom. Mr. Neal has taken a special interest in all of us, and this interest does not end when we leave Holbrook High. His patience and under- standing are qualities we all admire. In years to come, the memory of Mr. Neal’s leadership will remain with us always. 3 ADMINISTRATION 4 MR. H. C. GILGAN Superintendent 5 RICHARD E. Pullo 10 CLASS OFFICERS As our senior year draws to a close we now begin to reminisce about our four years at Holbrook High School. We have slaved over books, penned out essays, and lost countless hours of sleep working on term papers. These, however, are not all that have made up our high school years. They do not in- clude the friends we have made, the class dances for which we have planned and decorated, the classes and teachers we have loved and hated at the same time, and of the many other lively occasions in which we have all shared. The thought of losing all these mem- orable times and friends will make grad- uation day a lamented occasion. We have gained much from our years at Holbrook. What we have learned from books and experiences will benefit us throughout the years, and we, as sen- iors, will not let these memories mar our graduation, because we know that the future is and will be ours! Gil Wilder and his orchestra provided music for the dancers as they whirled around the tloor. Decorations of red and black streamers, a large dragon, and a Chinese pagoda depicted the Oriental theme. Miniature dancing dolls were given as favors to all girls and were distributed during the Grand March. Thomas Holloway, class president, and his guest, Janet Holbrook, led the Grand March. They were followed by the remaining class offi- cers and their escorts. The rest of the class mem- bers and their guests then followed. The highlight of the evening was the long awaited selection and crowning of the king, queen, and two princesses. These were selected by a board of impartial judges and were judged for their poise, appearance, and personality. Michael Koski and Geraldine Cassani were se- lected as the king and queen, and Gail Benvie and Charlotte Geletka were the princesses. 4 “The king and queen are crowned.” The Grand March. 28 The guests dress up our dragon. ‘May I help you out of the car. The play revolved about a young English woman, Bella Manningham. She thought she was going mad. Meanwhile, her dashing husband was flirting with their Cockney maid, Nancy. The kind-hearted housekeeper, Eliza- beth, introduced a detective named Sergeant Rough. He began to tell the young wife a strange story about her husband and his connection with a murder. The play became even more exciting when the hus- band found out about the detective’s visit. The people responsible for much of the success of the play were Mr. Hal Laughlin, director, and Sydney Andrews, the student man- ager. Members of the Executive Board who have worked extremely hard for the junior class are: Lyle Zardiackas, Linda Bestoso, Jeanne Powers, Ronald Kelcourse, Martha Rashleigh and Robert Reggian- nini. Throughout the year the junior class held many successful events, which made our class stand out among the others. The most exciting event was our Junior Prom, “South Seas Paradise,” held on May 5, 1961. The prom proved to be most memorable with the help and co- operation of the entire class. The junior class has worked extremely hard for a successful year but is looking forward to next year with great anxiety. 37 SOPHOMORE CLASS Row One: G. Quinn, P. Pitts, H. Gilson, D. Sullivan, J. We, the sophomore class, have had a very busy and successful year. Our activities included a very prosperous cake sale and a lively dance. The cake sale was the best ever held at Holbrook High, and it surpassed all previous records. With the superb coaching of Mr. Gildea and the assistance of coaches Mr. Girouard and Mr. Mahanor, Holbrook High’s football team experienced the best season in the history of the school with seven wins, one tie, and one loss. After defeating Masconomet easily (34-14), Holbrook’s team went to King Philip Regional to win by a score of 20-0. It was lucky that we had Dean Carlson, who scored three touchdowns. The following week, Holbrook played host to Marshfield and was led by Dave Birkenhead, who scored three touchdowns. Although they had trouble with Hull, Holbrook came out on top to win 14-6, after having a 8-6 score throughout most of the game. Next the team traveled to East Bridgewater where despite a let down, Holbrook won 26-0. The following week West Bridgewater came to Holbrook. Three touchdowns were scored in the first period by Holbrook, and the West Bridgewater team bowed 34-0. Holbrook then traveled to Cohasset where they met their first and only defeat. Both teams scored early in the game, but Cohasset scored the two extra points which won the game 8-6. After this defeat, Holbrook played Hanover and won 32-0. The Thanksgiving Day game with Westwood turned out to be very closely fought and ended in a 20-20 dead-lock. Holbrook had one of the best defensive teams in the state, as they only had 28 points scored against them before the last game. We also had many outstanding players who received various awards. In the Boston Globe, Tom Holloway made the All-Star Team. Tom, along with Mike Koski and Dick Joyce, made the Quincy Patriot Ledger ' s All-Star Team. Dick Joyce, Tom Holloway, Mike Koski, and Dick Cain also made the All-League Team, for which Mike was elected co-captain. Dick Cain had the honor of being one of the two underclassmen to make this team and the only one from Holbrook. The American Legion’s trophy for the Best-Lineman of the Year went to Tom Holloway, and the trophy for the Best-Back of the Year went to Mike Koski. 44 Mr. J. Girouard, Assistant Coach; P. Another determined effort to score. 47 CROSS COUNTRY The Cross Country team had a fine season with 6 wins, 1 tie, and 1 loss. A meet with Scituate proved to be a close match. During the last few seconds of the run. Holbrook pulled ahead and won the meet by one point. Coach Blythe praised his men for such a line performance. Another thriller was with Silver Lake. Holbrook held strong all the way, but they could not manage to pull ahead and win the meet. The meet ended in a tie. The team placed sixth in the Class D State Meet, tied for fifth in the South Shore Interscholastics, and finished fourth in the South Shore Principals’ Meet, Class A. Paul West and Mike Koski were the team co-cap- tains. West was the lone letterman returning from last years’ team. Koski was injured early in the season and was unable to continue. John DiCenzo, with a fine jump-shot, and Jim Weatherby were the teams high scorers. West was an outstanding playmaker, as well as a fine shooter, and big Bill Spillane was a fine defensive threat. Dave Birkenhead lead the team on rebounds and did a fine defensive job. The team played many close games. In a contest with Norwell, the teams went into one overtime and a sudden death. With two foul shots from Jack DiCenzo, Holbrook won the game 61-59. Another close game was with Marshfield, in which Holbrook lost by only one point. The team entered the Bay State Tournament and won their first game with Apponequet, 43-39. A match with Cole Trade proved more difficult, and the team lost 39-37. The Junior Varsity had a very successful season, winning all but two of their games. Jack moves in for a lay-up shot. 50 Rebounds! The boys fight for the ball. Higher Billy! The outstanding trip of the year was to the Salem Hospital School of Nursing. For projects to raise money, the club sponsored a cake sale and sold ribbon candy and Christmas cor- sages. On February 10, 1961, the club held “Medical Career Club Day,” to which were invited members of the Dedham Medical Career Club. At graduation exercises two scholarships will be awarded to two senior girls going into the medical field. The senior members of the club will receive Medical Career Club pins. 62 STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council in action. Seniors at work. An important conference of the officers and advisor. The Student Council is always willing to work to keep up the good name of Hol- brook High School. During the football season, we sold refreshments and programs at the home games. On November 15, 1960 the Holbrook Student Council was represented at the S.E.M.A.S.C. Convention at Rockland High School by six members of the coun- cil. At this convention the members were given the opportunity to attend discus- sion groups led by foreign exchange students. During the school year the Student Council planned assemblies and also worked at school functions, such as, basketball games and open house. On March 3 the Student Council sponsored a semi-formal called “Wonderland by Night” with Yin Perry’s Orchestra. Row One: C. Smith, Treasurer; J. Holbrook, Vice-President; S. Holden, President; J. Oftentimes through the hallowed halls of our beloved school, the melodious strains of our glee club rehearsing can be heard. This year the glee club, under Miss Hines’ direction, has worked hard to entertain and to educate musically its audiences. Both the Christmas Concert, a history in song of Christmas customs, and the Spring Concert, a world’s fair of music, were well received by the towns- people. This year again, glee club members have performed in state and district choruses. Our fine and active glee club has certainly earned the admiration of the entire school. Row One: J. Griffin, M. Between the halves of thrilling football games, its lively presence has added to our bubbling excitement. Its stirring medleys have helped to make solemn holiday assemblies more meaningful to us all.
