THE 1960 ECHO HOLBROOK HIGH SCHOOL Holbrook, Massachusetts page 9 page 33 page 41 page 55 It has been the purpose of the staff of the “Echo” to try and bring to you a jjicture of this year’s events at Holbrook High School. All the special happenings are printed and pictured throughout the book. We hope our efforts will give you an idea of what a year is like at our school. In June, many students will be leaving and going out to new and different worlds of their own. They will be very grateful for their years of hard work and for the satisfaction which they have obtained in the last twelve years of school. For many this will mark the end of formal education, while others will be continuing on to other schools. W e hope that in years to come, when these people read this again, all the friends and good times we have had together will come back to memory. DEDICATION MISS ANNA DAMON We, the “Echo” staff, with sincerity and regard, wish to dedicate this book to one who has given many of us the all-important inspiration to learn. Miss Anna Damon. In past years. Miss Damon has tried and, we think, succeeded to give us confi- dence in ourselves and our abilities. Her patience and cheerfulness have made a lasting impression on us. As a typing and bookkeeping teacher she is unexcelled. Her pupils have “a debit for every credit” as well as the entire keyboard firmly imprinted on their minds. She has, too, the gratitude of the class treasurers, who have received her advice in many business matters. Therefore, we are extremely honored to be able to display externally with this book our deep thanks and appreciation for Miss Damon. 3 Mr. John Zoino Elementary Supervisor Mr. H. C. Scared, but full of adventure and excitement, we set out to be one of the best graduating classes, as well as the first, to spend four years in the new school. Billy White did such an excellent job as president that he was re-elected for the next three years. On the whole, all our class officers have served us very well. Feeling quite confident with ourselves in our sophomore year, we sponsored our first dance, the “Spring Wing Ding.” As juniors, we had finally attained the status of upperclassmen. The Junior Prom, the biggest event of the year, took up most of our time and energy. Looking back on our years at Holbrook High, from the lofty position of seniors, we feel we have accomplished a great deal and commanded the respect of every- one. In this, our last year, we have given a successful bottle drive and a class play, sponsored a dance and sold pins. Our recently acquired executive board has been very helpful in class affairs. Decorations of a beautiful wishing well, a pink trellis of pastel roses, and tinkerbells provided a setting for the dancers as they whirled about the floor to Ken Reeves’ orchestra. President William White and Secre- tary Donna Baker led the enchanted couples for the Grand March, which was highlighted by the long awaited crown- ing of a King and Queen, namely, David Holden and Nancy Loud. As a remembrance of “An Evening In Fantasyland,’’ blue miniature slippers dotted with lace and roses were given as favors. Thus ended the fantasy as tomorrow became reality. In December, the senior class presented the rollicking comedy, “Charley’s Aunt.” Confusion came about when two Oxford stu- dents, out of the gay 90’s, persuaded one of their friends to dress up as an old woman— presumably so he would be a “chaperone” when their girls came to tea. However, the plot thickened when the real aunt turned up as well as the ferocious guardian of the two girls. The play would not have been the success that it was without the help of many students and teachers, especially the director, Mr. James Halpin and his assistant, Jane Silver. ‘Do you take sugar and cream?” Jack Chesney Charley Wykeham Lord Fancourt Babberly Donna Lucia D’Alvadorez Kitty Verdun Amy Spettigue Ella Delahay Brassett Stephen Spettigue Sir Francis Chesney William White Frank Horton Leo Dube Camilla Keefe Emily D’Amore Linda White Jane Bemis Carl Gustafson James Christian Frederick Thurberg 29 AWARDS WILLIAM WHITE Boys’ State and Good Government Representative. They have proven them- selves worthy of this high estate through many successful activities and functions held this year. Class Officers are Thomas Holloway, President; Marcella Gaudreau, Vice-Presi- dent; Geraldine Cassani, Secretary; and Barbara Bayer, Treasurer. Members of the Executive Board are Suzanne Barlow, Thomas Holloway, Judith Cuff, Barbara Bayer, Marcella Gaudreau, Mary Anne Keefe, Robert Brown, and Geraldine Cassani. The members of this board have worked very hard to make the Junior Class stand out among the other classes. During the year the class held their annual cake sale and dance, and both events were very succe ssful. The biggest event was the Junior Prom, held on .May 6th, which was entitled “Oriental Mystery.” Many members of the class worked together to make this Prom one to remember. The class treasury was further augmented by the selling of pens, stationery, and blue and white shakers. Some members of the Junior and Sophomore classes have standardized the school ring. The class of 1961 has worked hard this year and is looking forward to our Senior year with anticipation. 35 SOPHOMORE CLASS ROW ONE: C. Smith, S. Paris, C. Anderson, M. Yancey, K. MacAulay, M. Student Council members elected were Carol Cox, Bob Colburn, Carolyn Hatch, Margie Webb, Cecelia Smith, Kathy MacAulay, Grace Gallagher, and Sandra Van Buskirk. We had a very successful year, financially, taking in over 1 100.00 from the sale of bookmarkers, Christmas cards, and a cake sale. A very unusual dance was en- joyed by all. The sophomore class is very well represented in sports, boasting “lettermen” in girls’ and boys’ basketball, field hockey, and football. 36 ROW ONE: B. Staiti, D. Damon, R. Martin, N. Condon, A. We, the Class of 1963, entered the high school in September with great antic- ipation of the four years to come. As we look into the mirrors of time, we see reflected our ambitions, ideals, and future goals which we hope to contribute to the high school. In October we held our first class meeting to discuss our big social event of the year, the freshman dance. We are proud to say that this event was a great success because of the support of the upper classmen. We have not only gained knowledge in our first year of high school, but also the ability to conduct ourselves as sophomores next year. 39 SCHOOL RING The Junior and Sophomore Classes have this year selected a design for a ring which will be used from now on as a school ring. Miss Anna Damon, Junior Class advisor; Mrs. Helen Wood, Sophomore Class advisor; Mr. Robert Kindelan, art supervisor; and a student committee made up of Richard Barksdale, Louise Cedrone, Pauline Dana, Charlotte Geletka, William Woodman, Mary Ann Mavilia, Regina Hoban, Janet LaLond, Joyce Casperson, S tephen White, Ronald Kelcourse, Rebecca Koza, and Robert Colburn worked together to bring this about. The designing of the seal was a project of an Advanced Art group. Three de- signs, the work of Susan Barlow, William Gaudreau, and Stephen Boczanowski were submitted to the ring committee. The design submitted by Stephen was the one accepted. The stone in the ring to represent the school color is a blue faceted-top sap- phire electra-gem. On the right shank is the bulldog, the sports symbol with the numerals beneath. On the left shank is the shield, signifying protection. Within the shield is the book signifying learning; the lamp, knowledge; the dagger, the “arms” of learning; and the globe with 1954 commemorating the date of the dedication of the school, making the ring truly representative of Holbrook High School. 40 STUDENT COUNCIL ROW ONE; E. There goes our Bill. The Cross Country team had an outstanding season and won the South Shore League title with a mini- mum of trouble. They handed defeats to Silver Lake, Hanover, Duxbury, Norwell, Bridgewater, Scituate, Avon, East Bridgewater, and Rockland. Bill Potter, co-captain, was outstanding for the Bull- dogs, winning a majority of the meets and also the South Shore Class A Run. The team had fine depth in Bill Holloway, co-captain; Bill Facey, Paul West, John Pachucki, Dennis Cosindas, Phil Magaldi, and Jon French. This was evident by championships in the South Shore Class A Run, South Shore Principals Meet, and an undefeated season, which added three trophies to the Holbrook High School trophy case. Holbrook entered the State Meet with a powerful team, but a leg injury hampered Paul West, therefore, the team was only able to place second. Under the skillful coaching of Mr. Richard Blythe, the team is hoping for another successful season. ROW ONE: D. French, D. .Smith, R. Elliott, R. Brown, P. Magaldi, A. Batstone, D. Paine, R. Through the skillful coaching of Mr. Gildea, Hol- brook finished the season with six wins and three losses. Assistant coaches Girouard and Lemire did outstanding jobs molding the line and backfield, respectively. Holbrook displayed an over-powering offense and a brilliant defense in defeating their first two opponents, Millis and Prov- incetown, scoring sixteen touchdowns and allowing only one. The following week (led by Mike Koski’s three touchdowns) they defeated a strong Cohasset team and then walloped Hanover without Koski, who was now one of the state’s high scorers. Holbrook’s next game was with Marshfield, the team con- sidered to be the best in the league. Holbrook played a fine game, but was beaten. An injury to Koski in the third period was a contributing factor in the loss. Holbrook received a severe blow when it was discovered that Koski would be out for the remainder of the season. At its next game, Holbrook defeated its arch-rival. East Bridge- Mr. J. Girouard, Assistant Coach, Mr. B. Gil- dea, Coach. water, for the first time in the school’s history. Senior Bill White and Dave Birkenhead, a freshman, sparked Holbrook’s victory. Several key players received injuries as Holbrook lost its next two games to West Bridgewater and Hull. On Thanksgiving Day, however, Holbrook’s defense came through again and gave Holbrook its fourth shut-out of the year in beating King Philip. Holbrook boasted one of the toughest lines in the state. It was made up entirely of seniors. George Marble was at center, Rich- ard Condon and David Holden at tackle, Charles Pina and Ed Harris at guard, the latter winning the “Lineman of the Year” award. Captain Bill White, who won the “Back of the Year” award, was not only one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but also a spirited leader. Mike Koski was the highest scorer in the state until he received his injury. Tom Holloway, Paul Scannell and Dave Birkenhead and ends, Dick Joyce and Ray Crowell, contributed to the team’s success. White, a fine ball handler, passer end runner, scored tbs Holbrook touchdown vs. Ran- dolph test Friday night, and in addition, reeled off a 10-yard run. Art Murphy, a 8 ft. 2 in. trans- fer student from Brockton, ap- pears to have won the open starting end berth for the Bull- dogs’ opener at home vs. Millis on Saturday.. “He’s only a sophomore.” the Holbrook coach disdlosed, “but, .he’s a fine pass receiver. We ' Ueve he’s going to fill the bill for us there.” Ray Crowell, a 6 ft. 1 In. 160- pound senior, was another end rating GUdea ' s praise. “He’s in- jured right now (knee),” Gildea said, “but he’ll probably be our No. 3 end.” Frethman Proapeet The Holbrook coach also spoke highly of Jim Schou, a 140-poimd freshman end as- pirant. “He’s aggressive,” Gildea said, “and he’s a good tackier. He has fine potential.” ’The starting tackles, the Hol- brook coach indicated, will be Dave Holden, a 6 ft. 3 in. 225- pound senior, and Richie Con- don. a senior, who was a letter- man two years ago. “Holden is out for foc ball for the first .time,” Gildea revealed, but he ' s coming along nicely. Starters at Guards Two 1958 lettermen, Charley Pina (155) and Eddie Harris (165), will be at the guards for Saturday ' s opening kickoff vs. Millis, Oildea said. Pina, a senior, was a defensive starter last fall. So. too. was Harris, who is also a senior. “We feel we’re in pretty good hands there,” Gildea pointed out Gildea also had nice things to say about Harold Winders, a 160-pouDd Junior, and Fred El- iott. a 150-pound sophomore. Winders, the Holbrook coach Indicated, will be the Bulldogs’ No. 3 guard. Elliott reported only a week ago. Steve White, a younger brother of the Bulldogs ' regular quar- terback, was also singled out by OUdea. “He’s light (120),” OU- dea said, but he’s progressing nicely. Other left halfbacks meriting the attention of Gildea Included Dave Birkenhead, a 150-poudd freshman, and Jim MacLean, a 135-pound sophomore. Fine Prospect Of Blrkenhend, Gildea said ' “We like his lodes. He’s a good tackier and he loves to play de- fense. In fact, it ' s quite likely he ' ll be a defensive starter as a comer backer.” MacLean, too, the Holbrook coach intimated, will be a starter on defense. “He could be a big help to us there,” Gildea ad- mitted. Billy Jordan, a 140-pound sophomore and a star pitcher in baseball, will provide part of the depth at right halfback. Gildea said. “He ' ll aiso be a defez slve starter.” Gildea related. Dean Carlson, a 160-pound freshman who also rates highly in GUdea’s future plans, will fur- nish the depth behind ScanneU at fullback. Lemire. an aU-eastem end at Holy Cross, coached the ends and defensive backs. Girouard, a quarterback at Boston Univer- sity, is the Bulldogs’ backfield coach. The outlook? “We ' ve gaps (eight) to fill as a result of grad- uation,” Gildea said. We also aren’t particularly deep In man- power in the event of injuries. “Defense, too, Is something we’re working on right now,” the Holbrook coach related. “We aren’t quite satisfied there. “Offensively, though,” OUdea said, “we feel weYe going to be improved. With Koski and Scan- neU in the backfield, we’U move the baU, I m sure.” The Holbrook coach. In sum- mation added: “This Is the best uad I’ve had to work with both In attitude and wUllngness to work. 59 TRACK ROW ONE: Coach Blythe, J. Pachucki, B. Potter, M. Koski, B. MacWilliams, S. In the dual meets, Holbrook won eight of nine meets, showing fine depth and excellent coaching. The only loss was at the hands of a powerful East Bridgewater team. This was a closely fought meet and was not decided until the final event. Mike Koski was outstanding for Holbrook. He was consistently a triple winner and w’on the 100 and 220 dashes and the broad jump in a large South Shore meet. Bill Potter, Dave Balch and Bill Facey turned in fine perform- D. Clark. Dave Clark, Don Smith, and John Pachucki were the men who gave the fine strength in the dashes. With many lettermen returning and the fine coach- ing of Mr. Richard Blythe, captains-elect L. How ' ever, they came back strongly, winning five in a row, only to lose out in the final game. Holbrook received good pitching from Dave Aronson, Dick Joyce and William Jordan. George Marble did an excellent job behind the plate. Steve Cosindas, Ray Crowell, and Bill Holloway did the bulk of the hitting, while Tom Bates, Dick Cain, and Steve Boczanowski provided the team with good depth. 62 “You can’t hit it with your eyes closed, Tom.” “This one will be over the fence.” “Nervous, Steve?” “We’ll show ’em, George !” Duxbury Avon Cohasset West Bridgewater Hanover Bridgewater Norwell Marshfield Hull East Bridgewater Scituate WE 5 4 7 4 6 6 9 4 3 2 3 THEY 4 5 8 17 5 3 5 1 2 1 4 63 BASKETBALL ■ ' nribble down the floor. This qualified them for the Tech Tourney for the second consecutive year. Holbrook opened the season by defeating two non- league opponents, Rockland and Whitman, the latter being a “thriller.” They beat their first South Shore League rival, Scituate, but then lost three out of four games. It appeared Holbrook’s chances for a Tech Tourney berth were gone. However, Holbrook snapped out of its slump and went on to win nine out of the last eleven games. Those wins included a “sudden-death” thriller over Hull, and an upset win over Marshfield, who had beat Holbrook earlier in the season. Holbrook entered the South Shore Tournament but was eliminated in the first game by Norwell. The team won its first Tech Tourney game against Norwich on a last second set shot by William White. The next game, however, was against powerful and experienced Wayland. The boys performed brilliantly but could not defeat Wayland and lost 68-52. William Holloway, the team’s only returning letter- man, was the most proficient scorer. The other boys each excelled, giving Holbrook a really superb season. The junior varsity, under Coach Girouard, had a successful season also, winning fourteen games and losing only four. 64 ROW ONE: R. Ellard, Junior Varsity Manager. ROW TWO: S. White, W. Woodman, G.
