Be- cause of our sincere regard, we the Echo” staff, are happy to dedicate this issue to our Miss Knutson. 4 We, the staff of the Echo”, are happy to present herein a pictorial account of the year 1958-1959 in Holbrook High School. We give special recognition to the seniors, and wish them success and happiness as they start life’s greater education. FOOTBALL Coach Gildea and Captain John Munroe This year’s football team had its first winning season since football was revived in 1954. Holbrook easily defeated Millis and Provincetown. They played a great game against Cohasset, who was on a 13 -game streak, but lost late in the game by one touchdown. The next week Holbrook performed brilliantly and defeated a strong Hanover team. Holbrook suffered through a period during which they lost three games but came back strong to finish with victories over West Bridgewater and King Phillip. Barry MacWilliams finished his high school foot- ball career with a successful season, and was named co-captain of the South Shore All Stars. Mike Koski, a sophomore, was the high scorer for the team, and Francis Dowd, Francis Bernard, Gerald Sullivan, and Karl Osward gave Holbrook a solid line. They won 14 out of 18 regular season games and qualified for the Tech Tour- nament. In non-league competition, Holbrook opened the season with an easy win over Bristol. In the follow- ing game the Bulldogs rallied with 19 points in the final quarter to beat Abington. In the South Shore League, Holbrook easily defeat- ed Scituate, Hull, Duxbury, Norwell, and Cohasset. Holbrook had two off -nights early in the season, losing to East Bridgewater and Bridgewater. But later they easily disposed of Bridgewater and lost a heart-breaker to East Bridgewater in the closing seconds of the game. In one of the most exciting games of the season, Hol- brook came up with 18 points in overtime to pull out a win over Hanover. Holbrook won its closest game from West Bridgewater in a game which was not decided until the final minute of play. The Bulldog’s greatest victory came late in the season as they knocked Marshfield from the undefeated ranks by a score of 68 - 61 . In the South Shore Tournament, Holbrook suffer- ed a cold first quarter and were edged out by West Bridgewater 56-54, thus eliminating them from the tourney. In the Tech Tourney Holbrook, bowed to East Bridgewater in a rough game in which most of the starting players fouled out. Through the fine efforts of Coach Blythe, Hol- brook wound up with a record to be proud 6f. Barry Mac Williams, Wade Hooker, and Steve Cosindas were outstanding rebounders. The teams highest scorer, averaging 15 points a game, was Dave Aronson. Barry Mac Williams, Wade Hooker, and Steve Cosindas were not far behind. Steve McMorrow and Bill Holloway also scored well all season. The Junior Varsity’s seasonal record was iden- tical to that of the Varsity, 14 wins and 4 losses. laan ilJUiii ttsmi 1 ? 1 55 TRACK SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPS Holbrook High Track team this year had an un- defeated season and won the Southeastern Conference Championship. The team had little trouble defeating Silver Hike, Scituate, Bridgewater, Hanover, Cohasset and Norwell. They also romped over Thayer Academy in a non-League meet. On the following meet, Holbrook won over a powerful East Bridgewater 50V2-44V2. Holbrook’s fine depth was the important factor. In the last meet with Marshfield the team won a thriller as Steve McMorrow jumped 20T to clinch the meet and the championship. Coach Blythe, who piloted the team to one of Hol- brook’s finest seasons, did a fine job. Co-captains Steve McMorrow and Barry Mac ' Williams were outstanding in the Dashes and Pole ' Vault respectively. Gerry Blais and Wade Hooker provided a one-two punch in the shot put. Richard Hansen, Jack Bagley, Dave Balch, Francis Dowd, Bill Gaudreau and Bruce Stoddard also did well in their events. BASE Coach Gildea, faced with the problem of rebuilding his team due to the loss of six starters through graduation, rallied from a poor start to wind up with a record of eight wins and eight losses. After losing five out of their first seven games, Holbrook began a winning streak by defeating Cohasset 3-0 and Norwell 17-1. After bowing to Hanover, the team continued its winning ways by trouncing Duxbury and Hull. The team lost to Scituate and Marshfield, but finished the 58 BALL season by beating West Bridgewater twice. Co-captain Tom Gray, as the team’s catch- er, performed brilliantly all season, while the other co-captain, Dick Connors, rated as one of the league’s best shortstops. These men plus Dave Aronson, Bill Dillahunty, and Steve Cosindas were the team’s best hitters. The pitching staff, headed by veteran Dave Aronson, was supported by Richard Joyce and Dave Holden, who pitched well in their first year. I 59 G. A. A. VARSITY CLUB First Row: F. Dowd, B.
