Neal We, the class of 1958, in order to express what everyone in the high school and everyone in the community feels, fondly dedicate this volume of the Ec ho to you, Mr. Garland L. Neal, our beloved principal. Your guidance, wisdom and kindness have led us through four wonder- ful years at Holbrook High School. Whether our courses were centered around the college or business life, you took a special interest in each one of us. Whenever we had a problem, you were always there willing to listen and to help in every way. As years move on and we find our place in this world, the memory of your inspirational leadership and kindness will remain with us. 5 Administration Superintendent Mr. H. C. Gilgan Executive Secretary Miss Elna Knutson Mr. Louis R. Chase Mrs. Marie Holden Mrs. Helen Kuehn Mrs Ma garet nor FOREWORD June marks the end of our four years at Holbrook High. We shall carry with us memories of many wonderful events. As we pass through the doors of young adulthood into maturity, we shall be ever mindful and ever grateful for the knowledge and inspiration we have gained from the faculty and our social and athletic lives which have taught us poise, good sportsmanship and a better understanding of ourselves and others. We shall be grateful for the many wonderful times during our four years and the many wonderful friendships we have made. In this issue of the Echo we will bring you a guide to the happenings of our years in high school. We now leave and go our separate ways, but we shall take our memories with us ... . After another period of dancing, the big moment arrived for the choosing of the King and Queen. Judy Sheldon was crowned Queen of the prom while Dan Barry was the King. The Treasure Walk, a special feature, was held at 11 o ' clock. During the march each boy was given a stuffed ele- phant which he presented to his date as a souvenier of the occasion. The elephant was tied with a blue ribbon on which Holbrook Junior Prom, 1957 was printed in gold letters. The cross country team has completed another successful season under its capable coach, Mr. Blythe. The team won nine meets and lost only one in dual competition. Hol- brook finished second in Class D of the State Meet and first in Class B of the South Shore Conference. 1 CROSS WON 9 LOST 1 V OUR THEIR OPPONENTS East Bridgewater Whitman Rockland Hanover Middleboro Norwell SCORES SCORES 1st Row: W. Gerry Blais s “A SUCCESSFUL Under our new and enthusiastic coach, Mr. Gildea, the football team went on to more spectacular wins than in previous years. Coach Gildea not only taught the team the fundamentals of football but also taught them that good sportsmanship not only goes with wins but also losses, and this the team has certainly achieved. The spirit of the team itself was tremendous, not only at the games but at the many grueling practice sessions after school as well. SEASON The perseverance has been at its best. Though the team is very new, it has gone on with astounding fight- ing spirit to meet rugged competi- tion on the playing field and has had a season which will be long remembered. The Bulldogs have accomplished with hard work a great deal in strengthening the defensive line. The backfield operated with more speed and agility than ever before. In the coming season Holbrook High can look forward to the return of many seasoned players. The fu- ture looks bright for continued suc- cess on the gridiron at Holbrook. Of these three lettermen were returning from last year. In the four games the team played outside the league, Holbrook won three and lost one. The loss, against Whit- man, was very close all the way. Holbrook was in front by about ten points during the second period, but that lead slowly dwindled. The score at half-time was thirty to thirty. The lead sallied back and forth during the third and fourth periods, but Whitman finally won it by five points. In another closely- fought non-league game, Holbrook defeated Abington by a score of 58 to 54. In the South Shore League Holbrook had an even record of seven wins and seven losses and gained a tie for fourth place with Hull High School. However, five of the six games with the first three teams were lost by less than seven points and could have gone either way. In one of the games with Hanover, the South Shore League champions, Holbrook was behind by only one point with seven seconds to go. Against Marshfield, Holbrook lost by six points in overtime. In competition against Scitu- ate, Duxbury, and Cohasset, The Bulldogs had little trouble, winning all six games by wide margins. Round (Jp In the South Shore Tourna- ment, Holbrook received a bye in the first round and played Hanover in the quar- ter-finals. The game began with Hanover gaining an early lead. However, Hol- brook caught up and was behind by one point at the beginning of the fourth per- iod. For the next four minutes, the lead went back and forth until Hanover rallied to win it. Holbrook played Dighton in the Bay State Tournament. The Bulldogs rallied from a fourteen point deficit in the third period only to lose in overtime 50-44. The players are looking for- ward to a successful season next year under the very com- petent coaching of Mr. Blythe. This year the varsity squad was composed of two seniors and eight underclassmen. Furthermore, there are sev- eral good ball-handlers in the junior varsity group who may be able to fill the vacancies made by the graduating seniors. GIRLS ' BASKETBALL During the winter term deafening shouts ema- nated from the gym about 3 o’clock every Tuesday and Thursday. The girls’ basketball games were in progress, and those on the sidelines cheered very en- thusiastically for their teammates on the floor. The girls had a very successful year with Rita Smith as the captain of the varsity and Joan Keith as the captain of the junior-varsity. With the many new changes in the girls’ basket- ball rules the championship became a challenge. Throughout all their games, whether they won or lost, the girls showed good sportsmanship and team work. A Winning Under our very capable coach, Mr. Pierce, we had a very successful season with a record of eight wins and six losses, earn- ing us a third place in the Mayflower League. This is the best record we have had since 1942. Besides a winning team we had a team that had its heart in baseball and worked very hard, giving up many activities after school to play for the team and the school. Harmony and spirit are what it takes to make a good team, and our team had both harmony and spirit. 46 L L . . . Season We had spirit so great it could not be broken even after a loss. Our team also had sportsmanship, that essential quality that holds a team together. With this combination of harmony, spirit, and sportsmanship our team had success surpassing that of any of the previous fifteen years. All in all we had a very profitable sea- son, and anyone who played was proud to be a part of the team, and anyone who saw the games was proud to call the team a part of his school. 47 Cherrill Shermar Most Sophisticated Prettiest Hair Jeanette Kelcourse Paul Sullivan David Gilson Prettiest Eyes David Dobson Jeanette Kelcourse Senior Superlatives BEST LOOKING PRETTIEST EYES Jeanette Kelcourse David Dobson CLASS ARTISTS Martha Dean Robert Krishfield Jeanette Kelcourse MOST OBLIGING MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED David Gilson Sandra Holbrook Cynthia Hardy Paul Tibbetts Peter Tibbetts Robert Krishfield CUTEST BEST DANCERS CLASS SWEETHEARTS Martha Dean Sandra Giovanello Sonia Olson Peter Tibbetts Vic Morgida David Dobson PEPPIEST MOST ATHLETIC BEST DRESSED Janet Fisk Rita Smith Judy Sheldon Peter Tibbetts Gerry Blais Tibbetts Twins FRIENDLIEST BEST PERSONALITY CLASS FLIRT Natalie MacWilliams Janet Fisk Carole Tibbetts Peter Tibbetts Peter Tibbetts Peter Tibbetts NICEST SMILE MOST SOPHISTICATED CLASS HEARTBREAKER Margie Pitts Cherrill Sherman Carole Tibbetts Paul Tibbetts Paul Sullivan Vic Morgida MOST POPULAR Janet Fisk Peter Tibbetts CLASS COMICS Carol Jensen Peter Tibbetts MOST STUDIOUS Cynthia Hardy Ed Smith BEST NATURED Natalie MacWilliams Peter Tibbetts MOST TALKATIVE Natalie MacWilliams Peter Tibbetts PRETTIEST HAIR Jeanette Kelcourse David Gilson Track Almost Perfect The track team started its season this year with the hope of having a championship record. This hope was not short-lived, for the team ended up the season with only one loss. There were four wins and one tie meet. The tie meet was a gruelling contest with an almost impossible score — 47! 2 to 47’ 2. Mr. Blythe gave the boys some very good coaching tips for each event. A few of the outstanding competitors in the various events were: Steve McMorrow in the dash; David Balch in the mile; Gerald Blais in the shot put; Barry Mc- Williams, whose best jump was a new school record of ten feet six inches, in the pole vault; Wade Hooker and Bruce Stoddard in the high jump; Barry MacWilliams, Francis Dowd and Gerald Blais in the discus; Robert Cole and Howard Abbott in the half-mile. Each of these boys gave an outstanding ex- hibition, which in turned helped the entire team effort. Quite a few seniors are lost from last year ' s team, but Coach Blythe thinks that the team can still attain an equally good record. With a concentrated team effort Holbrook will again field one of the most respected teams on the South Shore.
