7iShI ■uMhhed HOLBROOK, MASSACHUSETTS Mr. ROBERT A. COLBURN Secretary The student body of Holbrook High School wishes to express their apprecia- tion and gratitude to the members of the School Building Committee. Although busy with their own personal and business affairs , these men spent much time and effort in planning our present high school. We can best express our appreciation by being the citizens that such a school may be expected to produce. Mr. RUSSELL N. CHAPMAN Chairman Administration MR. H. C. GILGAN Superintendent Your parents, your church, your community, and your school have, during the past twelve years, oeen of help to you in the formulation of ideals and a system of values by which you establish a standard to guide you through later life. These ideals, this system of values by which you live are of great impor- tance to you as an individual citizen of your community, and are of equally great importance to you as a citizen of your state and your nation. The worth and dignity of the individual, a strong sense of justice, a keen realization of moral and spir- itual values, a willingness to co-operate and sacrifice for the common good — these are the strands that have been woven into the standard and have given to you a map of life. The threat to our way of life and the belittlement of our ideals and principles will not prevail against us as long as you follow along the highways that these strands have established. My best wishes to you as you continue on your journey. H. C. Gilgan 4 Our Able Guides Mrs. O ' CONNOR Secretary Mr. GARLAND NEAL Principal The men who founded America believed that the State should serve the individual, not the individual the state, and that only educated individuals could preserve such a state. So the schoolhouse was the first of their buildings; and since their time untold amounts have been spent on education in the hope that the ideals on which this coun- try was established might be kept alive. Today, when other ideologies seek to cast doubt on these principles, 1 sincerely hope that your sc hool has helped to instill in you a love of your country and a faith in it so great that whatever you do and wherever you may be, you will always be ready to defend it against all en- emies. G. L. Neal 5 Mr. CLARENCE ALLEN Assistant Principal You are about to step out into a world which will be as good to you as you make it. Work hard and seriously at whatever you choose to do; think positively; be an active part of your community; keep in mind that team play is most effective; and enjoy your- self thoroughly. In September 1953 we started out fifty-two ambitious, full-of-fun, and willing -to-leam freshmen, our class ad- visers, Miss Anna Damon and Mr. Peter Bizinkauskas. Assisting the class advisers were our class officers: Robert Mac- Lean, president; Richard Elliott, vice-president; Joan Kemp, secretary; Jane Spinney, treasurer; Mary Ellen Buck- ley, assistant treasurer; and Janet Hunter and David Anderson, Student Council members. After much discussion and serious tliinking we chose our class motto: Always Endeavor to Continue Forever, and our class colors: Blue and Gold. Four new members were added to our class during the school year-Marlis Schweiger, Margaret Moore, Doreece DeVine, and Roland Wright. Extra-curricular activities for the year included Snoops Scoops, Band, Cross Coun- try, Glee Club, Girls ' and Boys ' Basketball, Girls ' and Boys ' Gym Squad, and Cheerleading, in which quite a few members of the class participated. In September 1954 we felt our importance as sophomores. This year the class officers were Mary Ellen Buckley, president; David Anderson, vice-president; Joan Kemp, secretary; Robert Downey, treasurer; Jane Spinney, assistant treasurer; and John McLaughlin, Carol Reynolds, Janet Hunter, and Dale Belcher, the Student Council representa- tives. The new members of our class were John McLaughlin, James Dowd, Joseph O ' Brien, Howard Abbott, Peter Fer- guson, Carolyn Mclnnis, Gail Grant, Florence Nightingale, and Carol Cox. Extra-curricular activities included the Echo, Bulldog Bulletin, Band, Glee Club, Gym Squad, Baseball, Science Club, Basketball, Cheerleading, Track, Foot- ball, and Cross Country. David Anderson came in third in the Football Kicking Contest. High Scorers for the Cross Country team were Robert White, Jolin McLaughlin, Joseph Tenore, Robert Christian, Robert Wagner, and Joseph O ' Brien. Our social activities for the year included a successful hot dog sale with Janet Himter, chairman. We also had a Clierry Tree Hop dance with Jane Spinney, chairman. This dance was a big success, thanks to our wonderful class advisers. Miss Damon and Mr. Bizinkauskas, who arranged for the appearance of a male singing group, The Four Chaps, who provided delightful music entertainment. Two years of work and a lot of fun have now brought us to our junior year. The class president was Robert Downey; Howard Abbott, vice-president; Gail Grant, secretary; Jane Spinney, treasurer; Richard Elliott, assistant treasurer; and Student Council members, Janet Hunter, Meredythe Chase, Robert White, and Dan Smith. New members of our class were Fred Sharp, Jane Massey, Eudivilia Closson, Loretta Repetti, Kenneth Lahti, Eva Morris, Robert Bethune, and Charles Lindsay. This was a very exciting and busy year for the juniors with the selection of class rings, a very successful hot dog sale, and our Junior Prom, this being the most important of all the events. The theme was Flower Land. The whole class worked extremely hard to make this glorious night. May 4, a big success. The auditorium, as well as all the people present, looked beautiful. Music was provided by Guy Ormandy ' s Orchestra. Richard Elliott and Louise Koski were crowned King and Queen of the Prom. Each year the American Legion Auxiliary selects one girl from the top ten percent of the class to send to Girls ' State at Bridgewater State Teachers College for one week. The lucky girl to be chosen was Barbara Condon, with Carol Reynolds as her alternate. Also each year the American Legion selects two boys for Boys ' State at the Univer- sity of Massachusetts in Amherst. The delegates were Robert Downey and John McLaughlin. The Junior office girls helping in the office were Carolyn Mclnnis, Meredythe Chase, Mary Ellen Buckley, Carol Reynolds, and Barbara Parrotta. Extra-Curricular activities were the Echo, the Bulldog Bulletin, the Commercial Club, the Glee Club, the Band, Cross Country, Track, Football, Basketball, Gym Squad, and Cheerleading. A quartet, made up of four members of our class, Jane Spinney, Gail Grant, Janet Hunter, and Margaret Moore, sang Christmas carols over the Intercom and also entertained at different assemblies. Joseph Tenore won a trophy in Boys ' Gym Squad, and David Anderson broke the school record in throwing the shot put, with a throw of 42 ' 4 1 2 . Those receiving Pro-Merito Awards, awarded for a B or better average for three consecutive years, were Howard Abbott, Phyllis Andrews, Meredythe Chase, Barbara Condon, Robert Downey, Alice Gillis, Gail Grant, Louise Koski, Janice MacLean, Lee Mason, Margaret Moore, Barbara Parrotta, Carol Reynolds, and Maureen Smith. At last we were seniors. Class advisers were Miss Anna Damon and Mrs. Velna Roberts, replacing Mr. Bizinkauskas. Donald Giardini, Richard Quaker, Hugh Kane, John Roberts, David Gartland, and Karl Seitz were new members of our class. To head the class this year were Robert Downey, pre sident; Howard Abbott, vice-president; Barbara Par- rotta, secretary; Jane Spinney, treasurer; Mary Ellen Buckley, assistant treasurer; and Janet Hunter, Robert White, Robert Hauston, and Carol Reynolds (president). Student Council members. Three members of our class, Robert White, John McLaughlin, and Joseph Tenore, were lost at the beginning of the year. Chester West was elected to replace Robert White in Student Council. Barbara Condon, James Dowd, Bette Pike, and Dan Smith were chosen for the Ex- ecutive Board to help out the class officers. Social activities held during the year were a Halloween Hop and a Paper Drive. Activities during the year, in which many members of the class took an active part, were the Echo, Phyllis Andrews, editor; the Bulldog Bulletin, Jane Spinney, editor; football, Robert Downey and David Anderson, co-captains; the Commercial Club, Barbara Par- rotta, president; Band, Driver Education, Glee Club, both boys ' and girlsj with Gail Grant, president of the Girls ' Glee Club, and James Dowd, president of the Boys ' Glee Club; Carol Reynolds, captain of cheerleading; Robert Wagner and Howard Abbott, co -captains of the cross country team ; and Student Council, Carol Reynolds, president. The senior year is a happy, busy one which brings enthusiam to all those looking forward to graduation in June. 20 i Junior Prom Grand March King and Queen rr ' Guests Dancing Class Officers 21 Student Council FRONT ROW: Howard Leonard, David Clark, Robert Hauston, Barbara Smith, Carol Reynolds, President; Chester West, Natalie Mac Williams, Jeanette Ferguson. Our past, as far as activities go, isn’t much to look back on, but we can al- ways look ahead! That we are doing with much anticipation. Like all Juniors, we are eagerly awaiting the evening of our far-famed Jun- ior Prom . This we hope will be a sensation and we are striving to make it such I The Class Rings have been ordered, and we hope are on the way. Several of the Junior boys have joined the newly formed organization re- ferred to as The Boys ' Glee Club , which performed along with the SPECTAC- ULAR Girls ' Glee Club (in which a number of the Junior Girls participate) at the Open House Program --thanks to the Juniors. Our class headed the Presidental Campaign held the day before election, which gave all students the opportunity to vote. At the assembly we heard ten campaign speeches, some favoring the Democratic Party and some the Republi- can. We are looking forward whole-heartedly to our final year at Holbrook High, sincerely hoping to make it a year which we shall always remember as the Greatest I 25 Sophomores FRONT ROW: M. Bell, C. Tt really doesn ' t seem possible I We ' ve had a lot of fun and a lot of hard work in High School but it’s worth it all. For most of us have great ambitions --some that we will probably never realize, others that we will realize with hard work and effort. We have accomplished quite a bit in the short time that we have been at Holbrook High, and we hope to accomplish more in the years to come. This year our officers were as follows: President, Arlene Taber; Vice- President, Richard Connors; Secretary, Bette Flores: Treasurer, Marlene M ac- Pherson. Under their able leadership we have made great progress. We wish to thank our class advisers, too, for all the help they have given us. They are Mr. Di Benedetto, Mrs. Hooker, and Mr. Downey. We all hope that next year we will come back a stronger class and we also hope that we will all come back as Juniors. Freshman FRONT ROW: J. Bemis, V. Adamo, V. Barron, J. Baker, J. Clark, P. Step by step our school has helped us forge the tools that we shall be using in all the days to come, as we set out to do our work in th hnild our own homes, and our.selve.s havp children to send to school. 31 English Miss MEGLEY There is nothing that we shall use more in the days to come than our training in English. Whatever we do, we shall need the a- bility to express ourselves clearly to others and to understand correctly what others are telling us. Mr. ROBINSON 32 Library Next to his brain and his hands, man’s most valuable tools are books; for in books thousands of men through hundreds of years have stored their knowledge. He who knows how to use books has the key to the fulfillment of his heart’s desire. Art The ability to see beauty in the world above us, and to make more beauty for ourselves and others to en- joy, may be a man or woman’s most cherished possession, making bad times bearable and good times better. 33 Social Studies History and the social sciences are like a road-map to a motor- ist. They tell us where we have come from and where we are; and except for washed-out bridges and new construction, they give us some idea of where we are going and how we are going to get there. Nothing is more stimulating than a debate. The greatest cal- culating machine cannot compete with the rapidity, range, and delicate choice of the human mind. Our debating team allows its members and audience to experience the mental thrill of a brain operating at electrical speed to resolve the great contro- versial issues of today. Mr. EXDWNEY DEBATING CLUB M. Moore, J. Lutz, C. Danville, R. Smith, N. MacWilliams, J. Keith, J. Simpson, S. Olson, J. Pike, Mr. Downey, Adviser. 34 Mathematics Whether we are trying to cope with the family budget, the town appropriation, the income tax, the building of a house, the con- struction of an airplane or the application of atomic energy, we shall all have use for mathematics in the years ahead. 35 Mr. PIERCE Science In a world of machinery, antibiotics and atom bombs, science is basic. Physicists, biochemists, doctors and engineers, are build- ing a new way of life for all of us. Each of them began his ca- reer in just such high-school science classes as ours. And home -making is still a woman’s most important job. 40 Industrial Arts Mr. CHIASSON Man ' s first tool was a stone from some ancient brookbed or glacier. It is a long road from that to the beautiful and complex power tools of the present day. Skill and brain power have replaced muscle and brawn in the production of beauti- ful articles for those who have learned to work with modem equip- ment. 41 Girls Gym Miss BARONE The old Green ideal of a healthy mind in a healthy body is as sound in today ' s world as in ancient Ath- ens. 42 Boys’ Gym With gymnastic facilities second to none on the South Shore. Holbrook High ' s gym squad is now a year round team. Practice is held twice each week in preparation for the Ex- hibition in the spring. Team mem- bers obtain much personal satisfac- tion in accomplishing a skill on the trampoline, rings, horizontal bar, parallel bar, ropes, or springboard. We may expect keen competition when other schools include this sport. 43 Band Miss NORRIS FRONT ROW; S. Andrews, E. Danville, J. Sheldon, C, Danville, R. Brown, M. Pessia, C. Pearce. BACK ROW; R. In our sports we learn to work together without thought of individual glory in order to produce the best team effort; we learn that loafing on the job is helping our opponents, and that there is more enjoyment in winning by hard play than by taking unfair advantage; we learn to size up an unfamiliar situation and work out the best solution of it on the spur of the mo- ment; we learn to assume responsibility when we are in control and to respect authority when someone else is; and we learn that to lose as a sportsman is better than to be a poor winner. We believe that in learning these things we are preparing to be better citizens and better hu- man beings. 51 Football FRONT ROW: R. Downey, Co-Captain; R. Christian, G. Blais, P. Files, D. Smith, R.
