KEITH Our staff, consisting of the secretaries, librarians, the nurse, dietitian, and cus- todian, all work together with Mr. Keith, our principal, the faculty, and the students to bring about the har- monious relationship and learning which make our school what it is. With this fine staff and faculty, Smith High can always be expected to do its part scholastically and socially. I There is an inevitable bond of friend- ship which binds the staff, faculty, and students in a natural cause-the search for knowledge. They have helped the school in many Ways. One of their major contributions has been sponsoring our school dances. The Parent-Teachers Association was founded in 1897 by Mrs. Theodore Birney as the Na- tional Congress of Mothers and developed into the National Congress of Mothers and Parent- Teacher Association in 1908 and changed to the National Congress of Parents and Teachers in 1924 of 4,500,000 members. The Smith High P.T.A. is a local unit of this federation in which parents and teachers are working together to advance the efficiency of our public school system. '10 MRS. GEORGE IVEY President MRS. Twelve long years of hard work are behind them. No matter how rough the road they have stuck it out-and have earned their right to be classed with Smith High's great. As seniors they have been the recipients of many attentions-notably the junior-Senior Prom. As members of clubs, athletic teams, military, and band, they have found many places to demonstrate their right to play the leading roles in The Smith High Story. 1 4 S'S MRS. Such has been the function of the Junior Class. It has taken a lot of hard work for the Juniors to climb the ladder this far-and this hard work will have to continue if they are to be given the leads in next year's production. SS MR. As the gossip buzzes among the Juniors, the main topics seem to be Senior rings, the Junior-Senior prom and the craze of pink and black. Then there are the new subjects such as problems of democracy and social living. Our main goal in clubs will be the National Honor Society which is re- served only to seniors who have high scholastic averages. We will try to be active in many organizations so that our Senior year will be filled with loads of fun and many activities. 29 H Milt: McKool, viCI flfdOlIfi. His hard hitting teams have failed to Win a spot in the State Tournament only once in the last eight years it has been a senior high school, starting in 1948. We have no depth, and we have had better talent, but this is the easiest bunch to coach I ever had, insists Watkins. They-come to play, they like it, and they hate to lose. The Smithies, who came as close as any team in the state this year to beating Baker's state defending champs, don't have what most coaches regard as ideal talent. Through their individual strength, the Smithies won nine of 10 Region 3-AA games and tied Sylvan for the Southern Division Cham- pionship. They also Won a berth in the State Tournament again this year. Bobby Braden, a slim six footer who is presi- dent of the student body, is a great shot from the corners and all medium distances, a fine re- bounder, and a proven star from three years standing. Even Watkins isn't quite sure who the other regular forward is. Ken Warren? Eugene Greg- ory? Donald Ballard? Tommy Shadix? All are promising upperclassmen, but are a year or so away from star proportions. Center Lamar Echols, 6-4 sophomore, is the city's second leading scorer. He is a fine re- bounder, probably Georgia's most promising soph. Don Ford and Bill McDaniel, a pair of under- sized guards, are the lads who play better than they know how. Their extreme speed and race- horse style makes them crowd pleasers and make them feared by foes. Smith entered the city tournament with four of our men placing in a list of 35 city leaders. Lamar Echols had an average of 20.15 Bobby Braden, 16.15 Bill McDaniel, 10.6, and Don Ford, 10.2 Truly, these are the athletic heroes of the Smith High Story. Out of ten games in the Southern Division of the city, they won eight. They were the first City League team in two years to defeat Southwest. The lassies went all the Way to the semi-finals in the City Tourna- ment, placing fourth there and second in the Southern Division. Their Coach, Mr. Lloyd Kimmel said, These girls overcame several handicaps and developed into the best girls' basketball team I have ever coached. Helen Born, co-captain and forward, and Ru- ane Aaron were the only two first first-string- ers to return. In the words of the coach they measured up to everyone's expectations, Helen being an exceptional ball handler and Ruane im- proving progressively as the season advanced. Peggy Hayes and Barbara Lee, guards, Were standouts in every game, Peggy being the first girl from Smith to make the city All Tourna- ment Team. Reba Ward and Barbara Harper filled the other forward positions. Barbara has an uncanny eye for the basket and Reba came up from a sub and proved to be an excellent pivot and a valuable member of the team. Ann Hardy, co-captain, who alternated with Bar- bara Harper, also contributed much to the suc- cess of the team. The subs came through when needed, adding much to the team's most successful season.
