UI DEDICATIVN With gratetul hearts, we thank Mrs. Sarah Botts tor being our school nurse. Whether we have an earache, toothache, or are just plain ornery, she knows how to cope with us all. She opens her heart to those who are ill and tills their needs with sympathy and understanding. Mrs. Botts came to Hoke Smith in l929, and tor years she dreamed ot someday having a dental clinic at our school. Now her dreams have been realized, and we bet those agonized screams that sometimes pierce the clinic wall only make her proud and happy. To you, Mrs. Botts, in sincere appreciation we dedicate the 1950 Smithsonian. 6 jAlf'0lflgA fA6 KFLOCM 6Uf'.'5 . Ulf, Mn Y P.T.A .... ADMINISTRATION... HERE'S TO THE SENIORS OF 1950 To the seniors who will go on to college, may you carry the spirit which you have displayed in our school and let it help you to surmount the trials and difficulties that may arise in your path as you strive for excellence in higher educa- tion. To those of you who are completing your formal education with your gradua- tion from Hoke Smith, may you carry this same spirit of cooperation and achievement into whatever line of en- deavor you may elect to enter. This spirit will help to build a successful career in your chosen sphere of service. When Sub-Freshmen days are ended and the Freshmen days beqin, may you have smooth sailing through your high school career. 61 ll Through the binoculars we can .see the 26 organizations that function in our school. The great majority of Hoke Smith students par- ticipate in some extra-curricular activity, some in two, three, or even four. A survey made by The Smithsonian shows that there are over 300 students on our athletic teams, 165 boys in the military unit, and 920 names on the rolls of our clubs. Another interesting observation of The Smithsonian is the close correlation between honor roll grades and a high degree of partici- pation in student activities. 'There is an organization for every student. Whdther the student aspires to being a brain in an honor club, a general in our army, or a star on an athletic team, he can find a- place to serve. 'The Smithsonian feels that no matter which organization the student joins, he benefits himself first and then goes on to make a fine contribution to our school. , ,g k Q fffjaxf A x bgyf Q S mls A ' if ,1 , f a Frances LaPorta Marilyn Piel Dorothy Baxter Berta Ree Cooper Co-Editor Co-Editor Circulation Manager Advertising Manager The l949 Hoke Smith yearbook received a 2-honor roll ratina from the National Scholastic Press Association and a medalist rating from Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
