USS HOEL DDG-1 The shi 's overall length is 437 feet, its beam is 47 feet and it displaces 4,500 tons. Twin steam turbine engines develop a total P of 70,000 shaft horse power and propel the ship at speeds in excess of 30 knots I-IOEL'S variety of weaponsisysterns testifies to 1 - n . 4 . - Q . . 1 -I I - ' ' ' H the diversity of its mission capabilities I-IOEL is equipped with surface-to air standard QSM2 MRD guide missi es, arpoon surface-to-surface cruise missiles, anti-submarine homing torpedoes and two automatic 5 inch 54 guns which can deliver extremely accurate and rapid fire against air, land, and waterborne targets. recently modernized radar, sonar and satellite communication suites have kept I-IOEL abreast of the latest technological developments in combat systems. A total of 350 officers and men make up the crew that keeps the ship ready to meet all commitments. Designed to be a fighting ship, HOEL also meets the daily needs of the crew. Special accommodations include the ship's store, laundry facilities and a library. The ship also has its own crew-operated radio and closed circuit television station which keeps the crew informed and entertained. I-IOEI. is assigned to Destroyer Squardron TWENTY-ONE of the Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet and makes regular deployments from its homeport, San Diego, California to the Western Pacific HOEL'S most recent deployment was six months in length and was completed in January, 1988. During that deployment, I-IOEL steamed throughout the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and North Arabian Sea, bringing goodwill to several countries and participating in naval exercises as a part of both a Battleship Battle Group and a Carrier Battle Group. I-IOEL has, in the proud tradition of its namesake, continued to excel in its contributions to the U.S. Navy. In December 1982, the Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet, selected HOEI. as the Arleigh Burke Award recipient for 1982. This award is annually presented to that ship or aircraft squadron which has demonstrated the greatest overall improvement during the fiscal year. In March of 1983, the crewmembers came to the aid of the people of Macedon, Australia. In October 1987, HOEL played a significant role in Operation Nimble Archer in which she and 3 other destroyers attacked and destroyed two militarized Iranian oil platforms in retaliation for an Iranian missle attackon U.S. reflagged tanker SEA ISLE CITY. In conclusion, the USS HOEL stands ready to show the flag of fight as she begins her 26th year of commissioned service, one of the last remaining Greyhounds of the Fleet. 3,11
