Merten, a native of Munster, Indiana, enlisted in the Navy in May 1969 undergoing nuclear propulsion plant training as a Machinist's Mate at Vallejo, California and Idaho Falls, Idaho. In 1970 he was selected as an officer candidate to the Navy Enlisted Scientific Education Program, attending the University of Utah 1971-1974. Graduat- ing Magna Cum Laudeffau Beta Pi in 1974 with degrees in mechanical and nuclear engineering and receiving his commission, h d - o o Q Q n ' e reporte to USS TI-IOMASTON QLSD 281 as Main Propulsion Assistant. He completed two Western Pacific deployments in USS THOMASTON. In 1978 LCDR Merten transferred to USS TAKELMA KATE-1131 where he served as Executive Officer! Navi ator com letin S 1 P 8 one Western Pacific deployment in the last deploying fleet tug prior to USS TAKELMA's transfer to the Naval Reserve Fleet. In 1980, subsequent to Destroyer School, LCDR Merten was assigned as Chief Engineer in USS BUCHANAN CDDC1-141, completing a Regular Overhaul KROHQ and Western Pacific deployment. LCDR Merten was assigned as Chief Engineer in USS WILLIAM H. STANDLEY ICG-321 June 82 - May 84, followed by service as Main Propulsion Assistant onboard USS CONSTELLATION CCV-64J, June 84 - Jan. 86. LCDR Merten was assigned as Executive Officer, USS HOEL QDDG-131 April 1986-Cctober 1987 Lieutenant Commander Merten's personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy Commendation Medals and various campaign ribbons and unit citations. Tip? I id!! milf' .milf nv' I nl: I51 17, rf? .lj CDR EDWI BOUTO , JR., USN Commander Edwin H. Bouton, Jr. was born on 13 May 1949 in Baltimore, Maryland. The son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Harry Bouton of Bel Air, Maryland, he graduated from Bel Air High School in 1967. He received a Bachelor of Science fOcean Engineeringj from the U.S. Naval Academy and was commissioned an Ensign in June 1971. He holds a Master's Degree in Ocean Engineering from the University of Delaware, May 1972. Commander Bouton has served in a variety of ships, concentrating in the nuclear propulsion field. Following graduate school he reported to USS W.S. SIMS QPF 10591 where he served as CIC Officer and qualified as a Surface Warfare officer, detaching in May 1974 for nuclear propulsion training. Subsequent to nuclear training, he served in USS NIMITZ QCVN 685 as Reactor Mechanical Division Officer, USS SAMUEL GOMPERS QAD 372 as Radiological Controls Officer and USS LONG BEACH QCGN 9D as Electrical Officer. His tour in LONG BEACH included service as Tactical Action Officer QTAOD for the Battle Group AAW Commander in the North Arabian Sea. Assignments ashore have included Naval Ocean Systems Center, San Diego, Surface Warfare Department Head School, and COMNAVSURPPAC Nuclear Power Mobile Training Team. In May 1985 Commander Bouton assumed duties as Chief Engineer in USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER QCVN 691, where his tour included the full span of an eighteen month Complex Overhaul in Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, the first overhaul in the ship's history. Commander Bouton relieved as Executive Officer, USS HOEL, on October 5, 1987. Commander Bouton's decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal Navy Commendation Medal and Navy Achievement Medal. He is married to the former Gail Proctor of San Diego, California. They have two children, Cameron and Elizabeth, and reside in Poway, California.
