Even though it is the first home for the unde- signated seamen aboard the ship, the work done by these men can be just as exacting and is usually more strenuous than any other type of ship board work. No other personnel have as many topside assignments regardless of the weather or time of day as the men of First division. All of these per- sonnel are trained in the maintenance of all electronic wizardry of radio radar signal transmitters and receiv- ers. From the ship ' s servicemen who run the ship ' s store, laundry and barber shop to the disbursing clerks who handle our pay checks, allotments and deposits to the mess specialists who feed us to the store keepers who see us through the Navy supply sys- tem, these men are always there to make our life just a little bit better. They operate the communication gear on the Hoel: flashing light, semaphore, signal flags and several types of radio, teletype and visual signaling equipment. These men may receive and transmit nearly a hundred messages in a 24 hour period that will seem like a slack period compared to other times. These men are the collectors and dissemina- tors t all the information representing our tacti- cal situation. They assist in making navigational fixes tracking air, surface and subsurfa tracts with inputs from their search radars or from sonar and in making recommendations to the budge for upcoming maneuvers. The HM ' s keep us well so we can take the leave the PN ' s set up for us when we get to wherever the QM ' s guide us. The PC performs what some consider the most important duty of all: Keeping us in touch with our loved ones. The YN ' s handle all the administrative paper work and the MAA ' s are the ship ' s police force. Our performance is largely due to the work of BMC Hirn and his crew along with the support from the rest of the crew. When it comes to UNREPS the Hoel is truly the best. It was a sunny December 21st morning when the Hoel arrived back in San Diego to be greeted by family and friends after five months of isolation from them. It was truly a joyous occasion.
