...... ...., ,.-.,..-..,P-.-..-Q..-,.,, K, 1. -.- -. SS HOEL DDG-135 The guided missile destroyer USS HOEL CDDG-135 is not the first ship to bear the name. The first HOEL CDD-5337 was sunk during the crucial World War II battle of Samar Island on 25 October 1944. The gallant ship went down with gun mounts still firing, successfully preventing a Japanese battle- ship force from destroying a vulnerable U.S. escort group. Only a handful of survivors, including her Commanding Officer, re- mained to display the Presidential Unit Cita- tion awarded for conspicuous valor. The present HOEL was launched in Bay City, Michigan in August 1970 and was com- missioned in Boston in J une 1962. This ship's overall length is 437 feet, her beam is 47 feet and she displaces 4700 tons. Twin steam turbine engines develop a total of 70,000 shaft horsepower and propel the ship at speeds in excess of 30 knots. HOEL is equipped with TARTAR and HARPOON missiles, two 5 .54 cal guns, Anti-Submarine Rockets and homing torpe- does. He entered the service as a river pilot in 1861 and shortly thereafter was rated as a First Master onboard USS CINCINNATI under Flag Officer A.H. FOOTE, U.S. Navy. During the battle of Fort Henry on the Ten- nessee River on 6 February 1862, he was one of the few wonded. It was on April 4 that the historic event occurred which made HOEL a Civil War Hero. On that night he volun- teered to pilot the gunboat CARONDELET down the river between the heavy Confeder- ate guns on Island Number 10 and the shore. They were fired on by more than 70 shore guns but completed the journey to facilitate the capture and control of the upper Missis- sippi river area. Q U ,YH 1
