COMMA DI G CFFICER WESTPAC 1972. A long, hard deployment - 113 days on line. Shoot - rearm - shoot, and all too often, ducks. You responded to each challenge safely and without injury. We had our good times too. Now I can even laugh about that surprise 0400 refueling in the middle of the rainstorm. But then, my emotion was one of sheer admiration for the men that broke their sleep, manned their stations, and did the job. HOEL developed an outstanding reputation during the deployment, but you earned it. The gunners carried the load, the engineers took us wherever we wanted to go, the supply types fought for material, and developed a thousand new .ways to make carrot salad, the ops types kept us in touch with the World, and many more had the most difficult job of all - keeping systems up and ready for eventualities that did not occur. f I I am exceedingly proud of the men of HOEL.
