HOEL, a naval hero during the Civil War. As the pilot of the Union gunboat CARONDELET, he braved the fire of Confederate fortifications at Island Number Ten to provide the North with strategic, control of , 3 3 much of the Mississippi Riverg this move is recognized as one of the turning points of the war. p The HOEL is not the first ship to bear that distinguish- ed name, however. The first HOEL QDD-5331, a 376 foot long destroyer commissioned in -1943, was sunk during the crucial World War II battle of Samar ori tober 25, 1944. The 'gallant ,ship went down' with guns mounts still firing, in a successful, attempt to prevent a, Japanese battleship force from destroying a vulnerable U.S. escort carrier group. Only a handfulof survivors, fl 1' The present HOEL was launched at Bay City, Michigan in August 1960 under the sponsorship of Mrs. Harry H. Long, a granddaughter of LCDR HOEL. The ship's overall, length is 437 feet, her beam is 47 feet-and she displaces 4500 tons. Twin steam turbine engines in the powerful engineering plant develop a total of 70,000 shaft horsepower and propel the ship at speeds in ex- cess of 30 knots. HOEL's' variety of weaponssystems testifies to they diversity of her mission capabilities. She is .equipped with surface-to-air .TARTAR guided mis- siles designed to destroy ,high speed high altitude targets at a range ,exceeding 15,mMiles. She possesses two automatic, 5 !54 guns which can .deliver extremelyeac- curate and rapid'-fire against peel air, lands and waterborne targetsf-Inadd-ition,l andgbhgminggtorpedoesig on lboardrareg probably the most feffectiwge plongffand short .range 4 anti-submarine weapons injtheffleatftodayii including her.Commanding,Officer,'remainedfto proud-.M h p 354O,,OffiC61fS 'iriakd 1111 thesofew Qj1t.keeM4the ly display the.
