Stark, Jr., U.S. Navy, the Executive Officer of the new ' th Nav Guided Missile Destroyer U.. S.S. HOEL lDDG-131 has completed seventeen years in e y. Born in Trimmins, Ontario, Canada and raised in Hibbing, Minnesota, he graduated from H'bbin Hi h School in 1946. He enlisted in the Navy shortly after graduation and two years l 9 9 later entered the U.S. Naval Academy by virtue of a Fleet appointment. Graduating with the Class of 1952, he was ordered to the U.S.S. KEARSARGE KCVA-331, after ' ' ' lebe class. Onboard temporary duty at the Naval Academy as an instructor for the incoming p KEARSARGE he was assigned to the Gunnery Department, and later as the Assistant Navigator ainin in that billet until transferred in August 1954. OKLAHOMA CITY lCLG-51, The Flagship of Commander U.S. SEVENTH FLEET. Commander Slifer arrived aT The building yard, Defoe Shipbuilding Company, aT Bay CiTy, Michigan in January 1962. There he assisfed in com- plefing The ship To meeT Navy sfandards and in organizing The ships crew in preparafion To manning and commissioning The ship as a maiorunif of The fleef, Commander Slifer wears The Commendafion ribbon wiTh a le1Ter of Commendafion for. service during The Korean War. He also wears six baTTle sTars on numerous campaign ribbons for World War ll and Korean War acTion'. Commander Slifer is married To The former Florence Pohlman of Brooklyn, New York. Prior to reporting to HOEL, LCDR Stark was attached to the Proiect Mercury Staff of Com- mander Destroyer Flotilla FOUR as the Retrieval Techniques Officer and was a member of the Recovery Force that effected recoveries of Astronauts SHEPPARD, GRISSOM and GLENN. He ioined the Project Mercury Staff shortly before the first successful Mercury Redstone flight and was detached after the successful orbital flight of LTCOL GLENN. LCDR Stark wears the World War ll Victory Ribbon, China Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Ribbon, Korean Service Ribbon with two bronze stars, United Nations Service Ribbon and the Korean Presidential Citation. He is married to the former Barbara M. Harris of Baltimore, Maryland. They have two chil- dren, Timothy lol and Jeffrey l3l. Mrs. Stark and the children are presently residing in San Diego. ,xy , 9
