HOEL IDDG-l3l Via: Commander Cruiser-Destroyer Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet ' Subi: Assistance rendered to disabled English yacht STAR DRIFT I. On 30 August 1962, U.S.S. HOELIDDG-131 was diverted by Commandant, FIFTEENTH Naval District to render assistance to the English yacht STAR DRIFT which was adrift with engine trouble approximately I5O miles northeast of Cristobal, Canal Zone. 2. Rapidly, and without hesitation, the U.S.S. HOEL proceeded to the position of the STAR DRIFT, arriving two hours later, Determining that engine repairs could not be effected at sea, the U.S.S. HOEL by means of a ship's boat, took the STAR DRIFT under tow. At a speed of 6.6 knots and l5V2 hours later, the U.S.S. HOEL, with its charge, arrived at Cristobal, Canal Zone. 3. The willingness to render assistance to human beings in distress and the saving of prop- erty enhanced the prestige of the United States Navy in the entire local area. s 4.
