olor adds to any picture a depth, tone, and character that black and white cannot achieve. Splashes of color are like sparks of life that brighten everyday landscapes. Friendship, a caring for others in the community, colors the halls of Hockaday with a vibrancy only friendship could give. Friendship paints the cheerful yellow of a birthday poster for a freshman little sister, the pastel pink of flowers to say ‘‘Congratulations,’’ or the shiny red of an apple for a faculty pal. Its brushstrokes create the royal blue of senior class T-shirts, the or- ange and black of Trick-or-Treat-O- Grams on the lockers at Halloween, or the forest green of the banner wishing the field hockey team “Good luck’’ before an important game. ues are the shades of colors, subtle tints that can be de- scribed as ‘somber’ or ‘lively,’ “‘harsh’’ or ‘‘soff.”’ The reaction to a certain hue is stud- ied so that the artist knows which color to select fo create a specific effect. Tubes of paint labeled “cadmium blue” or ‘'kelly green” take on meanings known only to the artist. Hockaday gives each student a new, blank canvas and all the paints she can use. The student grad- ually selects which hues of learning she will use to design an education. The resources extend from the gas chromatograph in the chemistry lab- oratory to the foreign language it- erature shelves in the library to the knowledge of dedicated faculty members. Opportunities abound in a comprehensive curriculum, work- shops, and tuforials. The hues of learning are varied and many, not simply in the color range of a stu- dent's desk or a test paper, but en- compassing the understanding gained outside the classroom as well as within.
