' 2- . N 'Y' , activities, special talents are discovered. As Middle School students gain maturity, they have more challenges and a wider range of academic subjects. Students are exposed to fine arts in choir, ceramics, art, and music. They learn self-reliance, and they continue to develop their special talents. i In Upper School, the options for growth are almost limitless. Guid- ed by their advisors, girls plan their courses of study themselves and explore new academic and extra-curricular areas. From world history to biology, field hockey to voice, girls sample many different areas. Once a girl recognizes her talent, she may go as far as her skills allow. Whether her interest if -X 'A L1 is in foreign language or student government, she is encouraged to set high goals. Hockaday wants students to learn about themselves and to grow into well-rounded in- dividuals. The sooner a girl iden- tifies her talents, the sooner she may refine them through her ac- tivities inside and outside of school.

Each individual - from the smallest pre-schooler to the fourteen-year veteran - is special I at Hockaday. She is an important part of the community as a whole because diversity is part of the unique environment. This is a school where a heterogenous blend of students learn from one another to the greater enrichment of all. Each person brings talents, interests, hopes, and fears to Hockaday, and she shares them all with close friends. The ex- 'kong lg. ' ' Liza ,,,,,,...-ff- ' change of ideas often leads to the altering of attitudes and prejudices. Getting to know people who are different from oneself allows a girl to know herself better. Not only are the friendships which are formed by students mutually beneficial, but they also last long after their days at Hockaday are over.
