P eS NE OF OY ME OR RAK we. aA. Be ‘ gyn is aso Fo The Graduating Class of 1982 Graduation A Hockaday graduation is a spec- tacular event. Even as far back as 1915 the girls wore white dresses and garden hats and carried baskets of flowers. In the early years the girls could choose their dress and hat. Now the dress is chosen by the class and the hats are the same style but different colors decorated with flowers by each girl. In 1915, the first graduation, there was only one graduate. Miss Hockaday decided to have Mildred Liebman sit outside under a pergola on the Haskell campus. When the school was moved to Greenville a pergola was built on the new campus. Following this tradition, Hockaday built in 1982 a pergola for the Welch Road campus. The graduating class of 1982 was the first class to continue this tradition of graduation under a pergola. Even in 1939 the graduates walked under a gladiola arch.
