Cornerstones 3 The Hockaday School

The Hockaday School, one of the outstanding girls, schools in the United States, was founded by Miss Ela Hockaday in 1913. Since then, the school has expanded far beyond Miss Hockadayis expectation, but the origi- nal four cornerstones of character, scholarship, athletic ability and courtesy have remained unchanged. The aim of Hockaday is to prepare young women for col- lege and civic responsibility. Miss Hockaday had a stimulating mind which inspired everyone with whom she came in contact, and with it a dignity and a warm, human friendliness that enhanced the beauty of her character. Thus, her legacy is a rich and continuing one which can be fully measured only in the years to come as her lifeis work, to which she dedicated herself unselfishly, continues to influence the lives of others. . . . Karl Hoblitzelle Miss Hockadays fine qualities of mind and heart, both innate and cultivated, were manifold, but those which meant the most to me were courage, her stead- fastness of purpose, and her ability to make others want to do their best. The school which bears her name has helped to prepare hundreds of girls for col- lege, and for rich and meaningful lives, as students, and afterwards as citizens, they have brought and will continue to bring honor to the school bequeathed to them. . .
