Hockaday, we, the Cornerstones Staff, have incorporated into our theme pictures representing parts of puzzles. At the end of the book we hope that the completed puzzle will provide each of you with a complete impression of our beloved campus. Dedication As the last class to graduate from the old campus of Hockaday, we dedicate this edition of The Cornerstones to the tradition, beauty, and wonderful memories close to the hearts of every girl who has walked along the brick path leading to her gradu- ation under the cool, nostalgia-inspiring pergola. We and those who have gone before us will surely never forget the graceful sweep of the acres of thick grass on which we have frolicked and shouted in days gone by; the relaxing atmosphere of Morgan Hall, through whose halls we have so often walked to classes; the radiant bursting into bloom of every living thing in the springtime, in seeming preparation for the day of culmination of all our efforts through the past years, surrounding the area of the pergola with luxuriant, fragrant blossoms and richly robed trees; but most of all, we shall remember the irrepressible, beautiful traditions which have made Hockaday the school which we will be so sorry to leave, the school which, although changing its location will, we all hope, retain its aura of high standards, tich culture, and moral and spiritual inspirations to every girl who passes through its gates. But we feel that the graceful tradition instilled by Miss Hockaday can never fully be recaptured when the memory-permeated grounds of our old Hockaday no longer ring with the laughter, | merry chatter, and friendship-filled camaraderie of the girls who have loved and will miss so much the lo nely reminders of what has been. But it was a gay year as well, with the fun-filled senior trip, destination unknown until arrival, and the laugh-inspiring Senior Day on May 12, with its hilarious take-offs on the school’s teachers and seniors arriving in truly unique attire. Beginning second semester were the numerous senior parties, which added many memories which the members of the Fourth Form will treasure, no matter how far away they may be in the future. The Fourth Form’s year has been truly one of unity, cooperation, and responsibility. VADA JAN ADAMS Dallas,“1 exas Attended Hockaday: 3 years Green Team Typing Club: II Art Club: III, IV Math Club: IV Honor roll: IV Your first impression of Jan is that she is probably the quietest girl you've ever met. Her silence is some- times mistaken for shyness, but Jan is anything but timid. She is actually an extrovert, ready to do things no one else could ever dream of doing. She is one of the few people willing to forget her own wishes in deference to those of a friend. Jan is extremely easy to get along with. This quality draws everyone to her immediately, so that all people consider her their good friend. Jan carries a great store of hap- piness and deep understanding with her. She will be loved wherever she may go. ANN ESTELLE ADDYMAN Fort Worth, Texas Attended Hockaday: 3 years White Team Vice-President Form: II Welcoming Committee: 1 Community Service Committee: III, IV Co-Chairman, III Lower School Chapel Committee: HI Chairman, III Boarder’s Pin: I, I] Tu Tertulia: III, 1V President: IV Merit List: I, II Math Club: II Recreation Committee: II, 1V Hall Mark Staff: IV Assis. Editor: IV All-School Cheerleader: IV Courtesy Cap: IV Student Government Committee: II Cute little Ann, with her vivacious mannerisms and ever-ready friendliness to all, has earned the respect of all who know her. She voices her opinions frankly yet always tactfully, and is looked to in every group for the mature degree of responsibility, without over-dominance, which she possesses. Gifted with courtesy, quiet leadership, and ability in her studies, Ann will next year be Hockaday’s loss and SMU’s gain. SUZANNE ALLEN Dallas, Texas Attended Hockaday: 3 years Green Team Chairman Trophy Case Committee: II Typing Club: II Art Club: III, IV Math Club: III, IV Short black hair, snapping brown eyes, an in- fectious laugh, and a rare sense of humor are a few of Suzy’s many assets. Rightly so, she has been knowns for her shy yet bold beauty and many beaux. . Whether talking with friends or working in one of the two clubs to which she belongs, Suzy seems to have a certain enthusiasm which will go far in this world. Including the two clubs—the art club and math club, Suzy has also shown in her three short years at Hockaday that she can be a responsible leader by her successful chairmanship of the Trophy Case Committee and her activity as a loyal member of the Green Team. As Suzy continues her enthusiasm, she will surely be a welcome member of any society that she may enter. Beth Anthony’s quick smile, lively sense of humor, and appreciative laugh can be heard almost any time during the day and night. This attractive girl from Arkansas is a necessity, with her clear, rich voice, to any songfest in Junior or in the houses. As well as possessing wit, charm, and an irresistible Arkansas accent, Beth is an excellent writer, and does well in all subjective fields. She possesses keen observance and a superior ability in expressing her- self, orally as well as literally. Her classmates love her, her teachers respect her, and those of us who have known her best will never forget her. But this is only Jane’s outer self, for upon closer acquaintance, as most boarders can verify, Jane has an inner liveliness and subtle wit which, although laugh- inspiring, never hurts the feelings of those around her. This quality, along with the quiet determina- tion with which she pursues her course, has made those of her class who know her well look to her as a Close friend, one upon whom they can depend in any extremity. In addition, small but energetic Jane has proved to be a great asset on the all-school basketball team. This is one gitl who, with her gray, candid eyes and pale blond hair, will be sorely missed next year. She has a sparkling sense of humor, is good-natured and is seldom seen without a smile. She always makes time for others and everyone is cheered by her sunny outlook on life. Whatever horrible disaster has oc- curred, Gail can find the humorous side and soon she has everyone laughing. Gail is also noted for her willingness to do things for others. She can be counted on to help out in any activity and has carved a definite place for her- self in school life. These two qualities, coupled with an easy manner, will win Gail friends wherever she goes. Although having been here only two years, Karlene has made a prominent place for herself among her- classmates. Her determination and her vivacity have gained her much respect and admiration. She has done much for the school spirit through her varied cheer- leading activities. Karlene’s outgoing: and friendly personality make everyone feel at ease around her. Because of her numerous beaux, Karlene is envied by many. We surely feel that next year Briarcliff is gaining a girl of outstanding drive and personality. However, she is endowed with many other outstanding features. Becky gives the appearance of an extremely fun-loving girl, which she is. But also, she is an honor student, devoted to her many activities in the Dux and Entre Nous. She has been a big asset to the Green Team as an enthusiastic and determined cheerleader. Becky’s many friends recognize her as a sincere and devoted girl. This is a girl that will find success in whatever field she chooses. Hockaday, the Latin department particularly, is losing one of its most essential girls. Wards Bermasrnraoro Hard-working, sincere, clever, and good-humored, Wendy has given of herself and her time to every project in which she is involved. Latin and Drama seem to be her main interests. Her help (especially backstage) in both Drama Club and in Glee Club has been greatly appreciated. But she is not always behind stage, she is also a great little actress. Because of her excellent diction, she received the Diction Cup in her junior year. She also has been a willing and imaginative helper on the Roman Banquet. Persevering and imaginative, Wendy is not averse to hard work without any glory attached; she will be well-remembered at Hockaday and eagerly received anywhere. A recognized leader, she was president of her class in the third form, and this year has simultaneously served as consul of the Dux Femina Facti and President of the Student Council. Mary possesses all the qualities needed and expected of a person holding a high office. She has a strong willingness, and indeed a desire to accept more than her share of responsibility. Each task she assumes is completed impeccably and with quiet assurance. Interested in every phase of school life, this versatile girl is involved in many activities outside the realm of student government. Above all, Mary has a charming vivacity that endears her to those around her. With her graduation, Hockaday will lose not only an efficient and effective worker but a loyal and lovable friend. NOEL BOARDMAN Ridgewood, New Jersey Attended Hockaday. 2 years White Team Entre Nous: III Honor Roll: III, IV Art Club: III Math Club: III Drama Club: IV Garden Club: IV Senior Play: IV | Noel is recognized as one of the funniest girls in i our class. She possesses the remarkable talent of being able to combine a New England accent with a deep southern drawl. This, along with the “Board- man” looks—a blank look while we explain some- thing to her fifteen times, then the pause, and “ ..0h...” which follows, then a little hidden smile that tells you she knew all along—endear Noel to us. We all recognize her by the ever-present sneakers and by the seemingly endless resource of Ivy League, roll-up sleeve shirts, a source of constant amazement to us. As we go Our separate ways after graduation, we will be sure to remember Noel wherever we go. One. of the most beautiful girls in the senior class is Linda Brack. This little bundle of vivacity may be found running madly around campus whether she is playing hockey, or trying to make it to Glee Club on time. Popping up anytime and anywhere, Linda, with her good naturedness and thoughtfulness make her a welcomed sight on any scene. Although she has worked very hard for her own school, Linda also has found time to be a very enthusiastic Saint Mark’s cheerleader for the past three years. We are sure that Linda will never be without many, many friends. ’ | rack LINDA CAROL BRACK Dallas, Texas Attended Hockaday. 6 yeats Green Team Roman Banquet: I-IV Glee Club: I-IV Vice-President: IV Act Clab-s1-1V) Vice-President: IV Math Club: I, I, III Runner-up for Posture Cup: III Varsity Swimming: I, II Softball Manager: III Athletic Shield: III Honor Roll: IV Welcoming Committee: I, III SUSAN VIRGINIA BRADLEY Dallas, Texas Attended Hockaday; 7 years Green Team Math Club: II, III, IV Inner Circle: III, IV Typing Club: I Debate Club: IV President: IV Hallmark Staff: II, III Tu Tertulia: [V Merit List: II All-School Hockey: I, II, 1V School Service Committee: III All-School Softball: III Science-Math Seminar: ITV Senior Play: IV Honor Roll: IV Philosophy Group: IV Mu Alpha Theta: IV Secretary: IV Ingenuous, candid, good-nutured, industrious—all describe Susan. Her open nature and willing help have made her beloved by all who know her. Un- affected good humor makes Susan easy to get along with. Susan also knows the real values in life, and is not swayed by falsities. No one has worked harder for her class and school than this girl. Her cartoon characters are often seen gracing posters up and down the hall. Susan has given freely of her time and is eager to help with everything. We will all long remember this genuinely friendly girl who often speaks of Hawaii, T-birds, and model trains. What is it that makes Jo so beloved by everyone she meets? It may be her amazing sense of humor combined with the ability to make anything laugh- able. Or it may be her genuine interest in and respect for the opinions of others, along with a quiet, tactful sympathy. But most likely it’s a combination of all these qualities, emphasized by their application to lower formers who find the work or boarding life dif- ficult at first. She has their unqualified respect, and the entire senior class’s as well. Jo will truly be missed next year. | Austin, Texas ye ck ee | Attended Hockaday: 2 years LY White Team | House Council: IV I Treasurer: IV Dux Femina Facti: II, [V | Roman Banguet: III, LVe Praetor: IV Honor Roll: III, IV All-Sch ool Volleyball: IV Basketball: III Softball: III, IV Swimming: III | Senior Play: IV | Merit List: III Recreation Committee: IV Harriett’s Louisiana accent lends itself well to hilarious imitation of character types as well as to quiet sympathy. She stands up for what she believes, unswayed by petty obstacles. Harriett can set us off into peals of laughter and yet cheer us up in a sincere, quiet way when we’re depressed. She objects strongly to undue partiality, whether in her favor or not, and will not stand for any malicious gossip in her presence. This is a girl who, through her direct and forceful honesty and ideals, has earned our respect and admiration, and will no doubt do likewise, wherever she goes. We'll miss you, Brownie. Molly knows Goren from cover to cover and has helped everyone improve her game. Sometimes very pensive, sometimes happy and bubbling with laughter, Molly, with her stunning green eyes and attractive figure, makes her presence felt in any group. Her wry sense of humor makes her a great deal of fun to be with, and her “Dresden” sophistication makes her extremely popular with everyone. Bedecked | in sunglasses, she can be heard calling a cheerful “Hey, there’’ as she hurries to Great Hall. Never downcast, Carolyn adds a measure of vitality to any gathering. Futhermore, Carolyn is very conscientious about her school-work and activities, and can always be relied upon to do her very best. She has a tre- markable amount of common sense and self-confi- dence which will aid her in any situation she may encounter. She dis- plays her versatility in her widely varied duties of White Team cheerleader, vespers chairman for the boarding department, and as secretary of the Fourth Form, in all of which she displays aptitude and enthusiasm. Gifted with the advantageous quality of being able to make friends easily, Judy is sure to be as successful in college as she has been at Hocka- day. eho saat Travis is usually seen striding around campus with paint on skirt, blouse and face. But the talent ex- hibited in her outstanding art work, which is always proudly on display in Mr. Smith’s office, more than makes up for any displaced blobs of paint on her- person. With a charming wit and winning smile, Travis has a sincere interest in those about her, and can always be counted on to liven any conversation. She has a great love for horses and the outdoors, which is shown by her constant chatter about Colo- rado and her family’s ranch and horses there. Perhaps the characteristic for which Travis will be longest remembered—and missed—at Hockaday, is that she is not afraid to say what she thinks, and because she cannot in any sense be termed hypo- critical, Travis is sure to have a fulfilling and ex- citing life. This is a mighty big order, but she has so many outstanding qualities that the list could go on and on. Her sense of humor is known by all, and she is altogether a very happy person. She participates in many school activities and is a’ valuable member in each. This year Marion was elected president of Entre Nous and vice-president of the Art Club. She is never afraid to express her opinions and it is this quality that makes her an asset in any discussion. She can not be easily swayed and knows definitely what she wants. When she sets a course she is seldom sidetracked. All in all, she can best be summed up as a “ball of fire,” with an endless number of friends. ALICE JANET DESANDERS Dallas, Texas Attended Hockaday: 5 years Green Team Tu Tertulia: III, IV Roman Banquet, Forum Freepress: II Hallmark Staff: III, IV Art Club: III Math Club: III Glee Club: I Senior Play: IV One of the most comical figures in the senior class is Janet DeSanders. She led the class to success in the Senior take-offs in her junior year and added her humorous touch to the Senior play. As author of ‘The Janetor”’ in the Hallmark, Janet finds hu- morous aspects in the everyday school routine. She is renowned for her interest in such things as radio stations, records, Johnny Mathis and Corvettes. Her participation in various clubs has added to her dis- tinction as a devoted Hockaday girl, as well as one of the cleverest. Sop Llpran Suzie is that rare individual, a woman who is a combination of beauty and intelligence, reserve and spontaneity, poise and humor. She has a vivacious and ‘bubbly’? personality, yet is level-headed and keeps her own, as well as her friends’ feet on the ground. Her ‘‘smart’”” manner of dressing, tact, poise, and social graces are the envy of her friends and make her a pleasure to have anywhere. Yet Suzi is very intelligent and does a wonderful job as editor of the “Hallmark” and the literary magazine. She also spent much of the summer at a mathematics seminar at S.M.U. Able to organize any job beauti- fully, Suzi mystifies her friends by managing at times to be seemingly unorganized herself. Truly Suzi, a juxtaposition of good qualities, will be an asset to everything she enters all through life. Always ready with an original idea, full of fun and creative as well, Kay has helped greatly to make our class what it is. This is a young woman of whom it may truly be said ‘She is a real lady’ and she makes this assertion manifest with her tactful, win- ning participation in conversations, her refusal to say an unkind thing about others, and her wide range of ability, from French to philosophy. Kay will be a successful individual in whatever she does in her life ahead. Naturally curly black hair and snapping dark eyes ate Molly’s outstanding features. Liz is serious, dependable, and mdus- trious. Her intelligen¢e, put to good use by hard work, is well-known. Liz has the highest ideals, and by adhering rigidly to them has won the lasting respect of her class. On the lighter side, Liz is a perfect hostess. Her snapping green eyes and vivacious personality bring parties to life and put everyone at ease. Liz will long be remembered not only as a charming and helpful girl, but also as a mature and purposeful person. 14 A smile, a twinkle in her eye, and a long red pageboy are all characteristics of Mary Thuss. Her great sense of humor is well known to the whole Senior Class. Although she’d be the last one to admit it, Mary is also one of the smartest Seniors. She never speaks of her grades or her problems and she is unselfish and is always concerned about others. She, a willing listener, is always ready to hear another’s problems and to help her. Eager to praise and quick to cdnsole, Mary will indeed leave a pleasant and longlasting memory behind her. Susan, always willing to help, has a genuine concern in any project she undertakes. Her hard work and versatility have helped make many of the dramatic productions at Hockaday a great success. She helps backstage, skillfully and willingly and is also a very good actress, for instance her per- formance in the Senior Play. Susan, poised and charming, has beautiful hair, a striking face, and a very good figure. The com- bination of her beauty and charm make Susan a real lady. Robin has long been acknowledged one of the loveliest girls of the senior class. With her fair skin and striking deep blue eyes, she’s an attractive addition to any group. Robin is devoted to beautiful music and very proficient on the piano. Besides giv- ing people pleasure in this way, she has a lively wit which takes effect in subtle yet striking remarks; she also has a talent for making people feel at ease in her company, as well as having a sincere interest in the accomplishments and problems of others. Hock- aday will miss her charming, winning presence next year. Her sincerity, good will, and enthusiasm have won many friends and her talent in acting and singing has gained the admiration of all. Eloise is always ready to give help and advice whenever it is needed, and she has dedicated much time to each of her many activities. Eloise, president of the Glee Club, culminated her four years of participation in the school operettas by playing the lead, Fiona, in “Brigadoon.” As is usual with a person of Eloise’s ability and effort, her performance in “Brigadoon” as well as in her other efforts was outstanding. Whether she works on the Student Council, in an honor society, or in a club, Eloise is always a wel- come addition. What endears Lana to everyone who knows her in her unaffectedness. Gifted with a beautiful figure and winning smile, she seems unaware of her out- standing qualities and works on as though she were no one out of the ordinary. Her skill at the piano has supplied us with many happy memories, as have her vociferous comments at the bridge table. This prime example of the lovely southern belles about whom we hear so much, and of whom we see so few, will leave an unfillable place next year. With a freshness like spring, and an ever-ready desire to lend a helping hand, Judy has truly won a place in the hearts of all who know her. As Green Team cheerleader, Judy, with her new and effective yells, has seen to it that the spectators never lose -enthusiasm. Because of her effervescence, Judy has won many girl friends and numerous beaux at home and abroad. Having traveled around the world, Judy has made friends in the Orient, Europe, and South America. We predict that Judy will have no difficulty in making a place for herself wherever she goes. Wertzie can nearly always be found playing bridge or enjoying a Dr. Pepper in Junior. Probably best known for her amazing ability as a mimic, Mary sometimes is the despair of her friends when, during . relatively serious moments, she sends them into gales of stifled laughter by her facial antics. Mary's outgoing friendliness has won for her many friends in the lower forms, and her second grade charges are always willing to attest to her excellence as a student teacher. For three years Wertzie has given her time to the School Service Committee and has ably served as treasurer and secretary. This warm girl with her joie de vivre will long be remembered here at Hockaday. She is one person upon whom anyone can count in a jam, and she always has the time, no matter how busy she is, to listen to someone else’s problems. She excels in studies, and is a steady work- er. Her dearest friends are the people who truly know what a sincere and righteous girl Susan is. She has a deep sense of what is right, but possessing this quality doesn’t prevent her from being one of the gayest members of a group. Though quiet, her comments are practical and effective. Susan will be a prominent scholar at the Univer- sity of New Mexico next year, and her teachers at Hockaday will miss her responsible work here. Innumerable freckles, a wide smile, and eyes that crinkle when she laughs—all these characterize Susan. As captain of the Green Team, personality-plus Susan has made it an enthusiastic and spirit-filled year for the Team. With her well-known warhoops which fill opposition teams with desperate terror as. Wiso sweeps down the field or catapults a ball across the volleyball net, Susan is one of the most familiar and best-loved girls at Hockaday. As well as being most proficient in athletics, Susan, with her smile which no one can resist, and her sincere interest in and friendliness to all, has truly won the enthusiasm and admiration of her classmates. She never misses an Opportunity to have fun, or to make something normally tedious a riotous picnic. Susan will be irreplaceable next year and for the rest of Hockaday’s existence. We all wish her the best of luck, wherever she may go. The purpose of this society is to further the member’s knowledge of the traditions, ideals, and principles of Roman life. The name itself, Dux Femina Facti, is a quotation from Virgil’s ““Aeneid’”’ meaning “the leader of the undertaking was a woman.” The Dux is headed by a cursus honorum consisting ofits eleven officers, by its sponsors, and, of course, by Minerva, the Goddess of Wisdom. Membership in the Dux is open to all Latin students who, after one semester, have an average of 85 or above in their grammar, Caesar, Cicero, of Virgil Classes. The highlight of the Dux-sponsored activities was the traditional Roman Banquet, held. in May in honor of Minerva, the Goddess of Wisdom. MEMBERS C. Anderson, A. Bartley, L. Barry, G. Barzune, J. To receive this award a girl must be elected by the student body and the faculty with the approval of the Student Council. The Hockaday Courtesy Cap stands for more that just courtesy; it stands for honor, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation. The green- and-white cap is worn on Fridays by those girls who have proved themselves worthy of this coveted honor. It is even more treasured because the wearers must continue to uphold its standards.
