J I ,, x., 'S X BK X Jr gf fx F K- x Dedication Mr. William K. McNabb is nationally known for his outstanding contributions to the world of mathematics. A prominent mathematician, he has served on many committees concerned with mathematical research and teach- ing. He has brought prestige to Hockaday and has given her one of the most comprehensive and advanced high school mathematics programs in the nation. Mr. McNabb's valid theory of teaching fundamentals rather than problem-solving techniques is one of the reasons that his students have such a strong background. Math is a difficult subject to comprehend, yet he always manages to make it clear, fun, and fascinating. He inspires diligence and effort in all his students. He possesses a boundless patience for the ever-present, l don't understand and Please explain that again. His main desire is to help, and perhaps his most frequent comment is, Stop by the office anytime. No matter what he is doing - whether writing a new textbook, writing a report, or working on one of his many proiects M he is never too busy to help students with their problems. Mr. McNabb periodically amuses his students by ad- vocating a six-day school week and an eleven-month school year. Although his proposal is offered quite ser- iously, it is always met with only a mixture of smiles and groans. He has shown loyalty and devotion to Hockaday throughout the twelve years he has been at the school, and in return he has received respect, admiration, and love from the entire student body. uk SE 'ir Mr. McNabb, we know that we can never fully repay you for what you have given us, we can only thank you very much for everything - for all you have done for the school and for those qualities which you have in- stilled in us. -The Class of 1960 2 Foreword Cornerstones 1960 us different from any other year book we have ever had at Hockaday lt us not only that our theme ns lnght and modern but also that for the first tnrne the theme has been carrned literally from cover to cover By dolng thus we hope to endow thus yearbook with a personallty all nts own We feel that the modern format of thus yearbook has certaun parallels an the new modern physucal plant the stones 1960 preserves and chronlcles the tradntnons that we at Hockaday cherush tradxtlons which wlll contnnue to be respected and observed In the new school The Annual Staff hopes that Cornerstones 1960 wall serve as a rernnnder of the frlends fun knowledge and understandung that have rnade the 19591960 school year so enloyable at Hockaday Seakellf 3 it 1 new school will soon occupy. My thoughts turn first to those of you who will receive diplomas at Commencement. Your accomplishments at Hockaday, as symbolized by these diplomas, will make you a source of in- spiration to your younger classmates. I am proud of the Class of i960 and of the achievements of each member of the class. May all of you have a full measure of success and happiness in the years ahead. Every Hockaday student and faculty member, l am sure, will join me in congratulating the editors and the staff of this yearbook for their excellent work in recording the activities of this school year. A publication like Cornerstones demands time, energy, and skill from every mem- ber of the staff. You have given freely of all these things. ln return, you have been doubly re- warded with this impressive-looking book itself and with the gratitude and admiration of your classmates. I commend you for your devotion to Hockaday as well as your achievement. The Forms Christmas dance a round of graduation parties and the Senior Prom were other social highlights in an eventful year. The class proiects for this year were giving chapel publishing the school Directory and sell- ing Hockaday athletic shirts. Through an active interest and participation by the class in Form activities the class has had a happy and successful year. The Class of 1960 wishes the same to the Class of 1961. i 'S 'sfaeiri ii-'x ' .f Wea '- 0 For three years Hockaday has seen the calm, quiet face of Cookie Allen. Sympathy and understanding are, perhaps, Cookie's two most outstanding attributes, and rare are the times when she is not sincere in her regard for others. Cookie is a girl with a proper bal- ance of good taste and good sense, other people flock to her for advice. She maintains strict principles and ideals, which she tries to live up to at all times. Cookie has a desire to write. Should she ultimately decide to enter the field, she has the perseverance so necessary for success. She is able to center her concen- tration on any task at hand and to complete it to the best of her ability. Cookie's warmth and love of good fellowship will undoubtedly continue to ensure her a close circle of friends. Her zest for life will provide her with fresh aims and interests wherever she goes, whatever she does. With sincere interest, Carol has done a thorough job for the various school organizations to which she belongs. She is always eager to help and to please others, and her courteous attitude toward all has made her a favorite among her teachers. She will be remembered at Hockaday as a girl who assumes respon- sibility seriously and who is always considerate of others, placing their happiness above her own. f-.ini i 'Q I' ' 5 .I We 'fri - -1' we W' ' , r V, QV' , ,, Mm f 29,3 gh 'f ff - -is-I ' ' I I , Q, QM! These unconventional arrangements often at- tract attention and provoke amusement. Many people who do not know Judy by name rec- ognize her as a frequent accompanist at chapel serv- ices. She has the unusual ability of being able both to play recital pieces and to accompany vocalists. She numbers among her accomplishments the composition of original musical works. Judy is an old friend to Hockaday, for she entered in the fourth grade and has been completely at home here ever since. She is so easy-going and compatible that it is always a pleasure to be with her. She man- ages to reduce most problems to a few simple alterna- tives and to laugh away doubts and fears. Poised and confident, she seems to walk through life without a care in the world. The words forever bubbling fit Betsy Barnard to a It is not often that you will find Betsy without some worthwhile proiect or good deed on her mind. While rushing through the halls, blond hair flying, she may be heard saying, Oh, dearl as she often does when she has forgotten something. In case you should see Betsy iust before bedtime, don't scream! You may think you have seen a ghost, but it is really only Betsy wearing her white mud pack. Anyone who is fortunate enough to know her will admit that Betsy is a girl of strong character, without her, many school activities would not run so smoothly as they do now. Ley WM? Susan is a girl who loves life and makes the most of it. Upon first meeting this petite girl, two questions immediately come to mind: was anyone ever so loyal to Oklahoma? Did anyone ever have so many boy friends? The answer, one soon finds, is no! Always on the go, Susan uses a great deal of energy as a Green Team Cheerleader, but she always seems to have enough left over to do whatever needs to be done to make someone else happy. Susan's great unselfishness and obvious friendliness help make her one of the most popular girls in school. Most recently she played Polly in The Boy Friend, This vivacious girl has long been a favorite among y her associates, and through the years she has come to represent many people's ldeal Hockaday Girl. Ril- l la's consideration for others is evidenced by the fact that she was awarded a Courtesy Cap in her Second Form year. What would life at Hockaday be like without Rilla's merry laugh, her witty comments, and her groans about how far it is to Lexington, Virginia? We know that the University of Texas will enioy having Rilla on campus as much as Hockaday has. 24 ELEANOR MONTELL BROWER Dallas, Texas Attended Hockaday: 4 years White Team Entre Nous: III All-School Hockey Team: I-IV Math Club: I, II, IV Hallmark Staff: III, IV Business Manager: III AFT Club: I White Team Cheerleader: IV Throughout her four years at Hockaday Baba has endeared herself to those who know her by her quick smile and her bubbly personality Delightfully scatter bratned and carefree Baba tends to look on the bright side of lfe Her optimism is shown by her never letting trivial worries depress her for long Her vibrant interest in social activities and her quick sense of humor make her entertaining to be around Baba is characterized as one who always finds some thing interesting in everything never seeming to be bored She is always willing to give advice when asked and has proved herself one who listens to and sympathizes with her friends problems Baba s percep tion and insight into the character of others are some times hidden by her seemingly naive attitude but these are qualities of which those who are best acquainted with her are well aware Everyone who knows Baba whether extremely well or not will agree however that above everything else Baba as fun to be with 0,5-G. Dodie can usually be found studying Espanol, playing hockey, or going to some St. Mark's function. Dodie's contagious laugh accurately reflects her gaiety. When everyone else is in a terrible mood, she will come bouncing into the room with a cheerful Hi, and things will be all right again. Sue has an abundance of leadership ability, which was exemplified by the fine iob she did as student director of the Senior Play. She has the rare ability of making others want to work. Sue will undoubtedly be an inspiration to her associates in the future as she has been to those in the past. Jw, iuaasamtscal Elizabeth, better known as Beth, is rather quiet and very smart. Indeed, she was intelligent enough to be a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist. But don't let her calm exterior fool you, for under it all is as lively a per- sonality as you can hope to find! Although a little shy, she enioys a good time and is a noteworthy conversation- alist. Whether you are discussing last Friday's date or Kant's philosophy, Beth always has something interesting to say. What is more, she has a keen sense of humor. One thing is certain: no matter what life has in store for her, Beth will meet it calmly and make the most of it. And wherever she goes, she will make a place for herself. Judy is absolute proof of this state- ment. Combining wit with outstanding leadership, this petite girl is one of those once in a lifetime persons. As President of the Student Council, she has exemplified her ability to do well any iob which she undertakes. Judy has complete control of any situation and instantly commands the respect of all. Characterized by bold handwriting, a hearty laugh, and beautiful green eyes, little Judy has all the energy of a wound spring. Welcome on any scene, from the time she arrives until the time she leaves, Judy keeps her companions laughing at her droll comments and her latest problems. How can one person be such a comic and such a leader at the same time? It takes a special quality which very few people have. Judy Camp has this quality, and it has endeared her to everyone who knows her. My +I 1 Qfve4,4,2Z Tiny, well-dressed, and full of laughter is Paula Carruth. She came to Hockaday from Harlingen, Texas, in her iunior year and has made many close friends because of her interest in others, her thoughtfulness, and her unusual sense of humor. Paula always has a friendly word for others when they need it most. She is not the quiet girl many think she is, her spontaneous laughter and quick wit make her beloved and appreci- ated by all who know her. Paula is also a responsible and determined person, especially where school work is concerned. Her per- severance carries her easily through difficult times. Because she is rather modest about her accomplish- ments, few people realize that she is an excellent pi- anist. She has taken piano lessons for many years and plays with perfection. At all times she has exhibited genuine concern for the welfare of the student body and the school at large. Cece has had a well-rounded life at Hockaday: she has mastered her studies, participated in all sports, and en- gaged in numerous school activities. She has never been content to accept a minimum of learning, but has always strived to gain the most a course has to offer. Several times in the past four years she has worked independ ently or with a group outside the classroom on special proiects. Her athletic prowess is well known. She is presently President of the Athletic Board and has twice been Form Representative to the Green Team. Cece has found time to enter into many school activities. She is fair in her dealings with other people, and she never attempts to gloss over her own mistakes. Her integrity is impeccable. Lyda is sincerely concerned about school spirit at Hockaday. Throughout her years here she has constantly endeavored to show her class and the entire student body how important it is to support one's school in spirit as well as in fact. If she is in a good mood, she makes fun of herself and the world, laughing at her numerous private iokes. But if she is angry, watch out! Her voice can be heard from Main Building to Morgan Hall. Isabelle loves a good time and is always ready for a party. Occasionally she amuses her friends with accounts of her trip to Europe last summer. In love with Europe, she makes no secret of the fact that she longs to return to the Continent. Her genuine love of culture draws Isabelle to the symphony frequently. A friendly complaint in her house is that her record player is on constantly. She has a deep appreciation for intellectual prowess and accomplish- ment as well as a lively interest in the arts. Her conver- sations are entertaining and enlightening. All told, Isabelle is something of a contradiction - an intellectual party-girl, a non-athletic sports fan, a conscientious worker with little regard for conventions. About one thing, however, there is no compromise: Isabelle is a leader. Becky's moods are changeable: she is sometimes very quiet, sometimes very lively, sometimes happy, some- times blue: but people will remember her most of all for her dry humor and quick wit. When she wants to relax, Becky usually heads for her Tommy Edwards records or the nearest bridge table. Intelligent, but not content to learn from books alone, Becky has become very popular at Hockaday simply because she is fun to be with and because she is intensely interested in all that goes on around her. She adds a great deal to any discussion through her enthusiasm and wit. She is a keen conversationalist and can speak easily on almost any topic. Even a cursory glance at this delightful girl shows why she has so easily made a place for herself at Hockaday. Jam A long blond pony tail, a charming smile, an infec- tious laugh, and a great sense of humor: these attributes belong to Faith alone. Here is a mature, stable girl, not easily swayed by others but always willing to listen to advice and suggestions from friends. A most versa- tile person, Faith is fun-loving, yet her strong desire to attain knowledge gives her the will to be a good student. Her delightful personality has won her the affection of her fellow classmates. A hidden talent was revealed last fall when Faith played one of the leading roles, that of Mrs. Antrobus, in Thornton WiIder's The Skin of Our Teeth. She helped to make the senior play a resounding success, and at the same time her talent for acting was dis- covered. Calmness of nature, readiness to laugh, thought- fulness for others, wise words, poise, and warmth and friendliness are all characteristic of this Hockaday girl.
