2390900111012 Every year the Annual is dedicated to the one person who, in the opinion of the Senior class, is most deserving of such a distinction. This year, we, the graduates, have selected the person who we believe has proved himself worthy by his service to, concern for, and love of Hockaday and all for which it stands. New to our school this year, he soon proved his continual zeal in every phase of life at Hock- aday-scholastically and socially. Never too busy to talk to a student. always willing to offer a word of advice, this thoughtful man is ubiquitous on the Hockaday campus. He is indeed the man to lead us in the true spirit of Miss I-lockaday'5 School. Wfe, the class of 1959, are very proud to dedicate our Animal to Dr. Bernard D. Shea.

MISS ELA HOCKADAY Founder A life is measured not so much by length of years, but by amount of accomplishment. When we speak of that which we accomplish, we really mean what lives we influence. That, after all, is the only significant accomplishment in life. The remarkable fact about Miss Ela Hockaday's life is that she was able to accomplish so much. By that we mean that she was able to influence so many lives. Her ideals of truth continue in the minds of all of those who sat under her. Her emphasis on the classics, her insistence upon work done carefully and neatly, her feeling of adventure in the search for knowledge-all of this is mirrored in many parts of the world by those who still remember with gratitude what a stern disciplinarian she could be when they wanted to take short cuts or settle for less than the best. Her works also follow after her in the concept of beauty which she instilled in the lives of her girlsfk In a catalogue published in the early 1920's, Miss l-Iockaday stated her purpose for The Hock- aday School. For those who wish to enter colleges of high standard, this school is designed to fill every need. NY'hiIe the purpose is to give thorough training in preparatory work there is another aim, more definite and of even greater scope-that of the cultivation of a perfect gentle- woman, intellectually firm and having poise, simplicity, and graciousness. To accomplish all this fully. the happiest surroundings. the ablest instructors and the most conscientious work are neces- sary. The distinction and rank of pupils depend entirely on their capacity and diligence, together with manners and moral tone. lt is hardly necessary to say that indolent or delicate girls, or those who do not realize the importance of thorough, all-round training, or have perverse ideas, are not acceptable to this school. 4' Taken from Alrmzfme Memorhzl Iuue.
