OFFICERS Thelma jean Goodrich President Hester Sue Vifoodfin Vice Preridenf Dorothea Bresslau Sei'remry-Trenrzzrer The girls of the Fourth Form feel that this year has been rich in experience and growth. Planning for the class play was rewarding for all and gave many a chance to display their talents. The chapel services given at school and at The Goodwill Industries were projects participated in by all. The Seniors also worked on the Milk Period clean-up campaign and published the Directory. Good luck to the Class of 1959 with hopes that your year is a happy one. If anyone were to ask who is the bounciest girl in the class of '58, there could only be one answer . Barbaral Barbara has spent six years at Hockaday earning the reputation of a wonderful, exuberant person who is fun to be with and an excellent athlete, too. She is one of the few people about whom it is easy to say sincerely that she can take disappointments with a smile, that she always has a friendly word ready, and especially that she has a fresh, unaffected personality which attracts others upon first contact, Barbara has a long record of accomplishments to her credit Cwitness her letter jacketj among which one of the most outstanding is her contribution to the Spanish Honor Society, Tu Tertuliag she is reluctant to admit it, but she has excelled in four years of Spanish. Perhaps it's a freshness, or a grand sense of humor, or a winning smile that adds that something special. Wfhatever it is, Suzanne has it. Pretty and petite are two adjectives often applied to girls, which are completely appro- priate to Suzanne. Although she loves to talk, she can be a willing listener, and she's a friend when it comes to bridge. You can find her anywhere there's a gathering of girls who like to talk and have a good time. Her two years at Hockaday have endeared her to each of us, but it will probably be the boarding de- partment which will miss her the most next fall, .for Suzanne is one of those people of whom it can be said that she's always wonderful to have around. Although she Barbara, everyone knows not! Deborah is one of the in the class of 1958 with her slow smile and ready warmth. Attractive and poised, she has proved herself a mature, intelligent individual who is easily able to have fun, but yet acutely aware of her responsibilities. In the little tasks Deborah shines above her classmates, for she is never too busy or too tired to do u favor for a friend. Common courtesy and consideration for others are qualities, not often found, which are outstanding in this little gal from Shreveport. Because there are so many Nancys in the class of 1958. Nancy Bertucci has been burdened by having to answer to her full name, Nancy Kaye. No one has exer stopped to ask her if she minds, but she has taken it in the same manner that she takes all the teasing directed at her cheerfully. If any special quality had to be chosen that distinguished Nancy from the rest of her classmates, it would probably be her warm heart and generous nature, for she is always ready to forgive and forget any hasty word or unkind act. Teasing Nancy about her many ro- mances is one of the favorite occupations of her friends. She has been an outstanding member of the Dramatics Department and is invaluable because she is as capable and interested in the backstage aspects of the theatre as she is in acting itself. To qualify this statement it is necessary to add that Nancy Kaye is an excellent actress indeed. Dorothea came to I-locl-:aday as a representative on the exchange student program, and since her arrival she never ceased to amaze everyone who meets her by her charm and her intelligence. In addition to Eng- lish, she speaks German and Portuguese and has Ll knowledge of French and Spanish. She has success- fully held the office of the class Secretary-treasurer, while at the same time her grades have been evidence that any difficulty she had in adjusting vanished within the first few weeks of school. Perhaps it should be mentioned, too, that she is able to charm more people than her teachers and classmates for '1 young man trav eled all the way from Brazil to spend a few days in Texas with Dorothea NT? Hockaday Ring: 1957-58 Sue Ann is one of the few girls in the Senior class whose looks are in direct contrast with her character. Naturally endowed with bright red hair and snapping eyes, in reality she is mild mannered and quiet, not given to emotional outbreaks or temper tantrums. At the same time, Sue Ann's classmates do not consider her a shy girl, for upon occasions, she is inclined to be a vivacious talker with a ready sense of humor, She is also gifted with the ability to be what might be termed an active listener, for she sits with a rapt expression that lends confidence to a speaker. In her two years at Hockaday, Sue Ann has matured into a poised young lady who is able to speak of the Greek tragedies and her new formal in almost the same breath. She is well-known for her college beaux and her wild clothes-buying sprees, Fortunately for her classmates, Bettie's com- posure is difficult to disturb, and, once upset, she quickly regains her easy manners, retaining no ill will. A Cicero student, she has earned high honors in Latin and is a member of the Dux Femina Facti in addition to the Math honor society, the Inner Circle. Bettie's charm and poise will enable her to fit easily into collegiate life, for she is the type of girl who can mal-ce friends anywhere. For the past four years, the shining blonde hair and the equally sunny face of Kay Caldwell have brightened the I-Iockaday campus even on the drear- iest days. Kay is truly a friend to all, always ready to do any job, important or insignificant, always quick to speak a word of encouragement or cheer. She is utterly modest and self-effacing and can be heard belittling herself to the amusement of all who know her. Kay has participated enthusiastically in many school activities. Her tireless work for the School Service Committee and for Roman Banquets and other Latin department projects will not soon be forgotten at Hockaday, nor are any of her former opponents likely to forget her skill at tennis. Most of all, however, we at Hockaday will remember Kay for her rare personal qualities of friendliness, sin- cerity, unselfishness and good will to all. Though Kay would be the last to admit it, she is loved for what she is by all who know her. Cookie, as her friends call her, has been known for her quiet but genuinely friendly manner and her abil- ity to remain level-headed even under pressure. One of her most unusual traits is her craving for pajamas, not just any kind of pajamas, but those that are out- standing. She has them with lace, without lace, long, short, leopard-skin and silk, and is continually adding to her collection. In addition to her charm, her strik- ing night apparel makes her a much desired guest at any slumber party. One of her outstanding virtues is that she has never been known to gossip about her acquaintances. Cookie will surely be missed next fall. Best known for her dramatic talent and her uni- dentifiable accent, Carol is a perky little blonde who enjoys life and jumps into every new project with enthusiasm. As a dramatic student, she has partici- pated in the great many productions including the Senior Play and the lead in Shaw's St. 'loan which was produced at St. Marks. Always full of pep and energy, Carol has countless friends for whom she is always ready to do an errand, give advice, or just cheer up with a smile. One of the most mature girls in theclass, she has an air of poise and charm which, coupled with a delightful personality, have made her a favorite with both boys and girls. Carol talks not only with her mouth, but also with her expressions, hands and body in the pattern of true dramatic art, and because of this and her great sense of humor, she is always fun to be with and a charming person to know. Because of her ability to accept responsibility and her keen under- standing of her classmates, she has earned many posi- tions of honor and authority during her years at Hockaday. Margaret has an outstanding sense of humor and, on occasion, may be almost elfin in her glee. She speaks rapidly in a most un-Texas-like accent which is the despair of her friends. She can be found almost any morning buzzing through the school drive with a Latin book propped behind the wheel. Martha is a pretty, perky little blonde who is de- voted to her friends, nonchalant about those who aren't, and a mature girl, pleasant to know. As stage manager of the Senior Play, she has done an ex- cellent job and has given herself away as someone able to organize, co-operate with a large group, be a little gruff at times, and still retain her charming manner. Her bright smile is known all over the campus, and she is good friends with both faculty and students. Martha is a popular girl and her many beaux are a well established fact. She is the type of person who is ready for college life, both because of her maturity and because of her ability to meet and like people. A natural comic, Lee has participated in the senior play, but she is most amusing when she is merely talking to a group of friends. A pretty girl, she has had no difficulty winning friends at Hockaday and will sure- ly have none next fall. Brenda looks and acts like the typical college fresh- man. Pretty, vivacious, a grand sense of humor, and long fingernails, are all characteristics of the member of the class of 1958 . . . Known for her sporty col- legiate clothes, she is a favorite in the boarding de- partment. She has a casual, relaxed attitude which keeps her from ever being too upset by things when they go wrong. Susan is a serious worker with strong, clear-cut ideas which will help her go far in the following years. It is evident that the cheery smile and twinkling eyes that have made her so popular with girls in all the forms, will never fail to direct her on a steady course of popularity and good times in college. She passionately detests athletics, and refuses to participate in any ac- tivities which do not pertain either to an intellectual subject or a social function. On the other hand, she delights in long philosophical discussions or honest gab fests, and has actually been known to talk all night, once her interest is aroused. She is, without a doubt, the most frank girl in the senior class. She has no qualms about telling her friends their faults, nor does she shrink from hearing her own in return. In fact, she welcomes criticism. Ellengene has a dra- matic flair for public speaking, and has been the president of her church department for several years. Her scholastic achievements have been equally as high, for last year she won the Cum Laude key. Playgirl? Scholar? It is believed that she herself doesn't know which she really is. Perhaps the most outstanding thing you would notice about Laura Sue after watching her carefully for several weeks is the fact that almost every time she does her hair, she changes its color. This can be very disconcerting, even though becoming, because often it is difficult to decide whether she is a class- mate or not until the newness of the change wears off. The great love of Laura's life, besides men, is horses. She rides often and is an accomplished horse- woman. By co-operating with others and undertaking deeds which are not glamorous to others, but neces- sary, Merl has contributed much to her class and school. XY'e wish good luck to Merl for the years to come and say to her, 'Stay as sweet as you aref Nancy is a little, dark-haired girl with a big smile, big eyes and an inquisitive manner. Somehow, she's always in the know about what's going on around school. She is a good student and is a member of both the Dux Femina Facti and Mu Alpha Theta. The third period Virgil class would never be the same without her eagerness, her sense of humor and her willingness to do what needs doing. She is the type of person who cheerfully takes on the little jobs that no one else wants to do. Always considerate of the other person, never without a smile, continually singing or laugh- ing, Carol is able to prove that a person can always be happy if she tries. Carol is never too busy to take on just one more project to help someone out. This year she simultaneously held the offices of Consul of the Dux, President of the Vicious Circle, White Team cheerleader and costume chairman of both the operetta and the Senior play. She has many talents among which are her literary ability, her singing, her dancing and especially her aptitude for Math. She has distinguished herself by winning the Math Medal several times. An attractive girl, she is in as great a demand off campus as on, and although she is re- luctant to admit it, she has many dates. She is also very active in athletics and is an outstanding hockey player. Even if she were not a lovely girl, Carol would be proof that true beauty comes from within. It all starts when you come to school in the morn- ing still half asleep and stumble into chapelg there, upon the stage, bright and cheerful, sits Betty an- nouncingvuthe hymn for today is4. There is no one who doesn't know who Betty is immediately. Naturally endowed with enough spunk for three girls and a miraculous set of vocal chords, she bounces her way through the day, performing with equal spirit her duties as President of Glee Club, her responsibilities as a senior member of Tu Tertulia, and as an active participant in athletic activities. She has been in- formally voted the hostess with the mostestn by her classmates, and her home has been the scene of one gala evening after the next for the last six years. Betty is L1 natural comedienne. If you are a regular reader of Sports Illustrated, you couldn't have missed the full page picture last year of our gal Sally-perched atop a pair of skis, skim- ming over the water, for Sally is a womens' water skiing champion. Never the type to be pretentious, she takes fame as lightly as she does everything else. She is the type of girl who laughs at everything and never seems depressed. She has the delightful habit of coming out with just the wrong comment at the right time which never fails to produce gales of laughter from her friends. Her use of unusual ex- pressions too, has made Sally one of the most interest- ing people to talk to in the class. Full of pep and energy, she is swamped with requests for dates, and wherever there's a party, there's Sally. As a comic actress she distinguished herself in the senior play, and no one will soon forget her imitation of the crazy, mixed-up Spanish mouse. Aside from having a very quick mind and a broad vocabulary, Pat has a wonderful personality and a sense of humor. She can'certainly be called an out- spoken person because this is one girl who says what she thinks-without hesitation. Her easy manner and friendly smile have brought her popularity, as evidenced by her election to the presidency of the Spanish Club, Tu Tertulia. Like everyone, Pat has many likes and dislikes. Among the things she likes are: junior, going to bed early, and cheese. On the other hand, she dislikes homework, dressing up, and phone calls from certain boysff This pert girl from Amarillo can easily be noticed anywhere because she is usually wearing sunglasses. This, she feels, will enable no one to recognize her. Another one of her whims is to be thin, and when she does eat, every- thing must be covered with A-1 sauce. These are only a few of the many things which make Pat such a loveable character, and it is because of these things that people will always want to be her friends. She is a lovely Texas size girl who, strange as it may seem, hails from Louisiana. Known best for her delightful imi- tations of everything from of her teachers to a tame gorilla, Helen sailed into Hockaday two years ago and immediately became one of the best liked girls in the class. Never appearing self-important, she has done an excellent job this year as president of the House Council, steering an even course between the counselors and the girls that she represents. She is the person people come to when- ever something has to be done immediately, and, seemingly impossible, she always does it. In addition, Lucia is a very popular girl outside of school. She dates constantly and was a cheerleader for St. M8flC,S Lions twice in a row. Never too busy to be a friend, she is a wonderful person to talk to and can easily take the teasing of her friends with good humor. Her only sorrow in life is what she considers her big feet, although she is the only person who notices them. Any college will certainly acquire a wonderful girl next year in Lucia. Beverly reminds one of a typical northern liuropean lass with her fair coloring, quiet speech, gentle manner, and devotion to her friends. She might easily have been Hans Brinker's heroine in the Sifzer Sizzler. A gifted ac- tress, Beverly can mimic any part easily and has a flair for assuming accents. She is a wonderful friend and boys as well as girls recognize in her, someone who is able to remain sincere rather than fickle. Long pony tail flying in the breeze, she is more often than not found dashing across campus on some mysterious errancl. But if you yelled at her to stop, she surely would for she always has time for her friends. She reminds one of the princess locked in the castle, but she acts like a true Texas girl. Her two major concerns are riding and a certain young man away at school. A champion horsewoman, she has riden in many shows and exhibitions and owns her own horse. Linda's person- ality and delightful manner have won her many friends. Her cheery smile and winning way have come to be a part of life at Hockaday and when she leaves, her place will not be an easy one to fill. She has always taken an eager interest in her class and in school activities, and is known to be a dependable and efficient worker. Sue has also been interested in team sports and has used her talent in hockey. The Senior class of 1958 is very lucky to have such a wonderful girl in their ranks, and we know that she will go far in the following years. Penny is the second Taylor girl to graduate from l-lockadav in the last four years, and she has followed through true to form. She is a spunky girl with short curly hair and a million freckles. Her wit and humor- ous pranks are famous in the boarding department. Although at times she is given to sarcasm, Penny has a quality of genuine sympathy which has endeared her to her friends. One of her favorite occupations is photography, and wherever there is a group of people, there's Penny with a camera, snapping away. A great bridge fan, she loves the gab and bridge fests which fill the afternoons and weekends. An attractive girl, she never lacks dates, and it's a sure bet that Penny will have no-trouble fitting into college life. She is also a girl of many abili- ties, for she excels in academic work and has capably held several offices of responsibility during her two years at Hockaday. In some ways, Chotsy contradicts herself. She is quiet, but she has the qualities of leadership: she is serious, but she loves to laugh: she has high standards of behavior to which she adheres, but she is certainly not a square Perhaps it is these conflicting characteristics of Chotsy which have en deared her to all at Hockaday. As a varsity cheer leader, she has many times yelled, Yea, Hockaday! Now Hockaday would like to wish well to this girl who has so faithfully supported it. XVe'll miss you next year If you see a short blonde cutie with only two things on her mind, Plack Carr and the Green Team, you can bet your boots that's Cissy. Feet apart and toes turned in are only two signs of Cissy's individuality. In addition, she has a quick wit, a ready laugh, and an easy manner that make her a great favorite among underclassmen as well as fellow Seniors. The Glee Club just wouldnt be the same without its only bass. Cissy is always full of pep and fun and has been a cheerleader for St. Mark's three years in succession. Although she sometimes tries to cover up with a frown. she isn't fooling anyone for the perpetual twinkles in her eyes gives her away every time. She throws herself into every activity with equal fervor, whether it is sports, singing, working on a project. doing Chemistry experiments or organizing a bridge game.
