HERBERT W. SMITH A ding H ear! marley You have made me too much a part of Form IV for me to dismiss you in official and con- ventional terms. With humor and patience you have interpreted the Southwest and The Hockaday School to its new part-time, acting Headmaster from the North. If the year, as this book suggests, has held some of the delight of My Fair Lady, the roles have often been reversed: I have learned more from you than how to pronounce 'pecan' or wear a Texas hat. You have honored me with your trust, and have not disappointed mine. The whole school has benefited from your willingness to assume wide responsibility, and to use power firmly but without arrogance. You have been candid in facing your own short- comings and generous about each others'. In addition, your abounding energy has kept the academic record of the Class high, its intellectual curiosity insatiable, its leadership in public -in the Christmas Vespers, for example, or the Carnival-well up to Hockaday's traditional- ly high standards,-and enough surplus has remained for a healthy amount of spontaneous nonsense. I wish Miss Hockaday could have known you, for you have done much to make her school what her English friend, Rebecca West, says a community should ideally be- a shelter where all talents are generously recognized, all forgivable oddities forgiven, all viciousness quietly frustrated, and those who lack talent honored for equivalent contributions of gracious- ness. So it is with gratitude, respect, and affection that your Headmaster bids farewell and god- speed to the Graduating Class of 1957 as students, and welcomes you to the goodly fellow- ship of Hockaday Alumnae.
