This man's influence has been felt continually although he has been forced to divide his time between Dallas and Boston. His New England background and captivating charm have been refreshing as well as inspiring. We will always remember him for the stimulating five-minute conversations. We shall never forget the provocative seminars in his office and in the Cottage-seminars which imparted more than a mere familiarity with Greek literature. This could have been the man of whom Cicero said they can treat humble subjects with delicacy, lofty things impressively, and moderate things temperatelyf' To this man, Herbert W. Smith, who has taught us how rewarding life can be in the search for knowledge, and whose genuine interest in every girl has made this year a truly memorable one for each of us, the Class of 1957 is privileged to dedicate its Annual. ?.S 2fI,W. 1' Asbim 325. 1 9' FH K EF' Ilitlfili WW'xE5W5J'L'Jm'91T5C?l Ll5KIYl CCC i ! .712 fem OFICI22 PATRICIA LANCASTER Patricia Lancaster, who passed away in her First Form year, was a member of the Class of 1957. SMITH A ding H ear! marley You have made me too much a part of Form IV for me to dismiss you in official and con- ventional terms. With humor and patience you have interpreted the Southwest and The Hockaday School to its new part-time, acting Headmaster from the North. If the year, as this book suggests, has held some of the delight of My Fair Lady, the roles have often been reversed: I have learned more from you than how to pronounce 'pecan' or wear a Texas hat. You have honored me with your trust, and have not disappointed mine. The whole school has benefited from your willingness to assume wide responsibility, and to use power firmly but without arrogance. You have been candid in facing your own short- comings and generous about each others'. In addition, your abounding energy has kept the academic record of the Class high, its intellectual curiosity insatiable, its leadership in public -in the Christmas Vespers, for example, or the Carnival-well up to Hockaday's traditional- ly high standards,-and enough surplus has remained for a healthy amount of spontaneous nonsense. I wish Miss Hockaday could have known you, for you have done much to make her school what her English friend, Rebecca West, says a community should ideally be- a shelter where all talents are generously recognized, all forgivable oddities forgiven, all viciousness quietly frustrated, and those who lack talent honored for equivalent contributions of gracious- ness. So it is with gratitude, respect, and affection that your Headmaster bids farewell and god- speed to the Graduating Class of 1957 as students, and welcomes you to the goodly fellow- ship of Hockaday Alumnae. FOURTH FORM OFFICERS-Left to right: Susan Sibbitt, jo Glassell, Barbara Beaird, Caro Alexander, Miss Davis, Effie Ladopoulou. ourff gofm The Fourth Form girls have had a full schedule during their last year at Hockaday. The Senior trip was the first event on the agenda, followed by the Christmas formal on December fifteenth. The class presented The Torchbearersj' a comedy by George Kelly, in january. The spring brought a round of graduation parties, and, of course, the tra- ditional Prom on April twenty-seventh. The class projects of the year were having charge of Chapel and publishing the Directory. For her help and guidance through our Senior year, we particularly want to thank our sponsor, Miss Helen Davis. Our thanks, too, to Mr. Smith and Mrs. Duncan, who have given so much of their time to the Fourth Form. The Class of 1957 wishes the Class of 1958 the very best of luck. In her very sincere way she has succeeded in mak- ing a countless number of friends, not only among the students but also the administration. Her artistic abili- ties have proven to be an invaluable aid to many Hocka- day functions. Whenexfer there was a job to be done Carol very pleasantly and most willingly offered her help, and very often carried the full responsibility. Carol has succeeded in carrying out two very impor- tant jobs: The Art Club, of which she was President her Ill Form year, and Chairman of Vespers, in which she has done a remarkable job and handled with great ease. Everyone joins in wishing this Hockadaisy the best that life could give. The College of her choice will cer- tainly gain a wise, considerate, and devoted person. Never con- spicuous, she has always been exactly where she was needed at the right time. Carols outstanding work at the hospitals in her Third Form year characterizes her unselfishness and her sense of responsibility. Her speech is as unassuming as her actions, but talking with her is always valuable and interesting, either because of her intelligence or because of her delightfully subtle sense of humor. It is difficult to summarize all the things that Caro represents in a few words, but if any can do it they are these: Caro is a lady. The possessor of a truly generous nature, she has given freely of herself and her time, to make the lives of others happier. She has spent many weekends at Hockaday with the boarders, and they have spent many weekends in her home. Fun-loving, Linda has en- thusiastically led her class as a cheerleader, and has been an active patron of Tarry House. A true Hockadaisy, were glad to have been classmates of Linda's, and wish her luck at college. Somewhat quiet and retiring, she is one of .strong determination and will for ac- complishment. This is reflected in her splendid contri- butions to the Four-cast, the Math Club, and Entre Nous. Although Linda has been with us only since early March of last year, she is a vital part of the class and a true Hockaday girl in every sense of the word. She has proved invaluable through her hard work as photography editor of the Annual, and Chairman of Dadls Day. As a friend, Linda is unsur- passed. Her loyalty and ability to 'be there when a friend is needed are perhaps her finest qualities. Her sparkling wit is just another reason Linda is beloved by her class- mates and teachers. We all know Hockaday will miss Linda next year and Good Luck to you, Linda is just our way of saying thanks, and goodbye. Linda has chosen Texas University as her school for next year. Barbara is known to all by her gay brown eyes and her ready laughter. She arrived at Hockaday in the III Form and has since made her place in a large group of friends and acquired a reputation of dependability. She excels in all sports but her favorites are softball and volleyball. Being a House Council member and Secre- tary of the IV Form, Barbara is always ready to help her classmates. Her contributions to her school and her gift for making friends will long be remembered.. Her quiet temperament reveals her fine, aesthetic feelings while her liveliness appears in her eyes and smile and especially in her snort, quick laugh. She isn't the typical red-head in that she lacks a fiery temper, but she has the red-head spirit. Among judy's outstanding qualities are her understanding and tender- ness. She will always be remembered for her portrayal of the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz and for her delightful questions in fourth period history class. The Student Council, elected by the stu- dent body in the spring of 1956 to serve during the following year, is the student governing organization of Hockaday. Its membership is composed of a president, secretary, treasurer, the presidents of the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Forms, the presidents of the House Council and the Athletic Board, and the chair- men of the Service Committees. Prerident MIMI MASON This year, through the cooperation of the faculty and administration, the student government has been able to assume greater responsibilities. These are three-fold: to provide an official channel through which the students may make known their ideas and opinions on matters pertaining to school life, to stimulate a genuine interest in, and loyalty to, Hockaday and school activities, and to make every girl aware of her position in the community by familiarizing her with the principles of self-government. 759 CSZKUOQIQZZ G0 1112 cz' S6r1'efd1'y ......... ...,,,.......... The Committee is composed of fifteen members, three selected from each form and three officers. Some of its main functions during the year have been the establishment of a diet table at the evening meal, a clean-up campaign, and a tuberculous examination for the student body and faculty. Members have acted as hostesses for athletic games and have helped in planning parties and luncheons with other schools, including a reciprocal chapel program. The Committee has also learned to operate the movie projectors so that films could be shown when the faculty members need them. ommzffees Standing: Sally Bell Jackson, Penny Brown, Mary Paulson, Marietta Scurry. Its program, trying to make the Hockaday girl more aware of the needs of others, consists of sponsoring charitable workshops, such as production parties, and donating money to different local, national, and world charities and organizations. The Committee is com- posed of members equally representing the four Forms, and during the planning of the Charity Carnival the Lower School is represented. The main project of the year is the Charity Carnival, held in October. The proceeds of the Charity Carnival are used throughout the year to help such organizations as the Community Chest, the Hungarian Relief Fund, and the Red Cross. In December, the Committee sponsors the Christmas gift program for the Marlowe School, and, in February, the junior Red Cross and the Service Pin Program. Rilla Boroughs. The meetings of the Dux are planned to explain and illustrate Roman customs, ideals, and traditions. The highlight of the year is the Roman Banquet, this year on May fourth. It is carried out in true Roman style, complete with slaves and sacrificial offerings to Minerva. This Banquet was a special one, because it marked the twenty-fifth anni- versary of the Roman Banquet. Each year, the Latin society gives three awards: a key to all Latin students who have been a member for one and a half years, a palm branch to all the Virgilian students who have attended four Banquets, and the Virgilian Medal to the girl who has made the highest grade in Virgil. The purpose of this club is to stimulate further interest in anything pertaining to France or the French people. Entre Nous participated in the Charity Carnival by turning Tarry House into a replica of the original Moulin Rouge night club. Adding to the French atmosphere, Mr. Abel sang several French songs. Initiation of new members was held in February. Initiates were required to know French history and grammar, the first stanza of La Marseillaise, and to submit an original eight-line poem about an initiated member. The new members were welcomed into the club at a French dinner at La Vieille Varsovie restaurant. It is composed of a President, the Green and White teams' Captains, and the Green and White team representatives from each Form. These girls control anything pertaining to athletics, such as, planning and scheduling games at school, arranging intramural competition, and choosing the Form teams for all games throughout the year. The athletic program is designed to encourage interest and participation in sports, and to ultimately promote sportsmanship and loyalty. -By providing for three kinds of competition, each girl can participate in some way. There are games between the Forms and between the Green and White teamsg the varsity teams enable a girl to develop her skills more highly by competing with girls from other schools. At the end of the year, five awards are given by the Athletic Board at the Honors Assembly. The Athletic Shield is given to those girls who were on four out of five Form teams and three out of five Green or White teams. To those girls who were on any of the varsity teams, a varsity is awarded. A banner is presented to the winner of the most Green and White gamesg the Fondren Award is won by the girl who has shown the best attitude toward athleticsg and the Form Athletic Cup is given to the winner of the most Form games.
