Just the other day while preparing to come on the air I read an account of one of the stars of that season, Leland Driver, After high school, he enrolled in A. C, C, and after four years of hard playing, helping to bring many honors to the school in athletics, he was offered a job as coach for T, C, U, , but decided to come home and take Coach Hodges' place, who, by this time was in very poor health from losing so much sleep in past years trying to play all the schools in the district basketball, Then, of course, Leland found out that the sweetest girls were close to Home, Sweet Home. You know, every time I think of girls I can't keep from thinking of the only two in the senior class, Donna Io, after all the dreamy looks and sighs passed in Howard's direction, finally found out she didn't have the energy and talent for arguing with him and placed her affections on a preacher who is doing good work in the local church. However, Mary Lou is a very successful business woman. She found out in high school that men do not mean everything they say and has been shy of them ever since. I suppose all of you know your local gas dealer, lvin Martin. He is always ready to serve you with a smile, and he seems to be making a nice sum of money since he took over Dad Burnett's gas business, but, goodness me, he needs a lot of money to support all those girls he now has 17, I thinkj. Chester Roy is farming at County Line on the old home place. He was undecided just what voca- tion to follow, but since there wasn't much work to do there Qyou know it seldom rains therej he decided to stay. Jackie Cave is still breaking hearts, He teaches at Draughn's during the day and is crooning over the local station at night. He has composed several songs, the most popular being Oh, Where has My Little Dog Gone? Elbert Lee finally found that girl of his dreams, He is now the janitor at Hobbs High and really keeps the place looking nice, especially the lunchroom. Cayton, 'who chose a military profession, has been promoted to Captain, I-le has finally learned tc give orders with a command. Truett, who was always proud of his ability to win the women, and of his good looks, has made several motion pictures, I read the other day where Mrs, T, Eaton, No. 4, was suing for divorce, Donald Wray has been successful in many things, He has a large ranch, a beautiful ranch home, and still drives a private bus from his ranch horse to school, However, all five of the plump little frecklefaced girls who ride it belong to him. Howard Denton, who had the ability to be a good lawyer since he never gave up an argument, de- cided after several serious quarrels with his clients fthey were wrestlersj to give it up. He is now lec- turing at schools for P, T, A, groups on the subject that CRIME DOESN'T PAY. After gallivanting around in Roby, Rotan, Hermleigh, and Abilene, Willie decided to settle down at Hobbs and try to go with the Hobbs girls again so he won't have to buy more than 31. 00 worth of gas at a time, Mr, Taylor finally decided his talents were not suited to being superintendent, He is now warden of the state penitentary, His chief delight is telling the inmates about the things he did when he was a KID. ' Mrs, Noles got so much experience in giving advice to the couples at Hobbs that she now sits at home in her rocking chair and writes a Lonely Hearts column for the local paper, Well, time's up, Tune in next year for more gossip and news of Hobbs High School, . City Rodeo and what trouble Donna Jo and Mary Lou had keeping Glen in the back of the pick-up at two o'clock in the morning, Howard took off his hat and even gave his beloved rope to Mr, Wadell, The freshmen started to the Football Banquet and didn't even see a cotton truck, Mrs, Noles thought she was such a good painter and how the Seniors had to dodge her to keep from hear- ing about the good job she did on Jo's desk. MR. MILLER got caught with a load of watermelons coming out of Schicks watermelon Patch. Mary Lou helped Mr, Taylor move a typewriter. Mrs, Jones came to school all dirty and her Christmas hose all torn and how disgusted she acted when anyone asked her what happened. Cayton made an A in Mr. Taylor's bookkeeping class, Two of the Senior boys were unwelcomed guests at the Gilliland house and all the worries it caused about the Football Banquet. Jackie Wayne didn't know Nancy Lou was around. Bynum didn't get to go to the Banquet because of an outsider, Two Senior girls both had a crush on a certain Senior boyl He said so anyway. Truett decided it would be more interesting to ride the bus home instead of taking his car even when it was at school, Frances couldn't decide whether to expect a certain Christmas present or not. Was she looking for one from Post? Patsy didn't go around looking at her arm and saying Oh dear, I'm late! Nona Lee made a call to Rotan when she thought no one was around. Willie had a record MISS STENOGRAPI-lER which he played the last day of 51 and broke it before the night was over, Aa. f f Q ' I Ruby wore a 52 class ring and at Zeizme I1 steady wit someone , Jackie and Elbert decided the typewriter needed fixing and all the trouble they had putting it together again. Ruby: No, I didn't, and besides I didn't like some of the things you said. Donald W. : Too bad about the disappearance of Professor Smith. He was such a profound thinker. Willie: Yes, I understand he was always thinking regardless of where he was. Why, just a few days ago when I last saw him, he was swimming and suddenly called out, I'm thinking! l'm thinking. Anna Beth: What is the meaning of the word marriage? Mr. Sims: Marriage isn't a word, it's a sentence. Chester Roy: Why do they say A-men instead of A-woman in church? Elbert: Because they sing hymns, not hers. Durwood: This steak is awful, How was it cooked? Tulia Waiter: Why it was smothered in onions, sir. Durwood: Well, it sure died hard. Mrs. Noles: Name two shooting stars. Howard: Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. Mary Beth: I suppose you get paid for the jokes you write. Truett: Certainly! You don't imagine I write them for fun do you? Mary Beth: Oh, no. Anyone could tell that by reading them. Barber: What's the matter? Ain't the razor taking holt? Leland: Yeah, it's taking holt all right but it ain't letting go again. Mr. Taylor: Has your wife changed very much since you married her? Coach: I'll say so--my habits, my friends, and my hours. Mrs. Jones: Jackie, don't you know Linco1n's Gettysburg address? Jackie: I didn't even know he lived there. Emmitt Joe: I don't think I deserve a zero on that Civics test. Mrs. Noles: Neither do I, but that's the lowest grade I'm allowed to give. Norman: Haven't I seen your face somewhere e1se? Ernest: I don't think so. It always stays here, right between my ears, I ackie W.: The attitude of girls toward men is very different. We took them in succession: Lue - den - 28 to o, Snyder - B - as to o, Divide - 35 to o, HE! Then it came, what you hate to hear most but it is all in the game so ---- Robert Lee - 20 to 13 in their favor. The next week we got back in the groove to beat Bronte - 19 to 0. The next week we journeyed to Coahoma to receive our second defeat bya score of 12 to 0, It was in that game that we lost the service of Bill, in the first of the first quarter, with a broken rib, We held them off until the last three minutes, when they intercepted two of our passes and ran for touchdowns, The next week we came into contact with Trent, but lady luck was not with us again, and we re- ceived another defeat by a score of 13 to 6. That put us right out of the race. The next Friday we left home for the last time. It was to go to Ira. We had a good night there and came home with a score of 46 to 0. The next Friday, was the game that we had all been waiting forg it was the game with Loraine, It was also the homecoming game, After a hard fight we got a victory of E toibut to us it was as good as 100 to 0. Then came the time for the coaches to get together and elect an all-district team, We had some good boys on it, they were Leland Driver, Bill Etheredge and Pud Neves. Driver and Etheredge were on it the year before, Next year both Pud and Bill will be back for another try at that all-district birth witha lot of other good players from Hobbs, So go on boys we are back- ing you all the way, With three boys on the all-district team and just losing three games, also scoring 214 points to our opponents 515 in my book that's a pretty good ball club.
