Evelyn Wojtowicz, Editor-in-Chief Bill Swartzell, Business Manager Hobart High School Hobart, Indiana tl... •,.-•■ - •• — — - 1 ■.jg - • 1 _ r — — — — — ■ ' ■(UK ;:. jof Every fall we begin our school year with the pleasant thought of summer fun still fresh in our memories — the friends we made, the gay parties we attended, those hot games of baseball and those wonderful days at the beach! Oh, what enjoy- ment we experienced from all these different a ctivities in just three short months of summer! But our delights need not cease just because school has begun. Occx flouwey Have you ever thought of our high school life as a fragment of a journey? Well, it is! Although our school days constitute only a small episode of this journey, they broaden our scope and lift our eyes to new horizons. For many of us the first new horizon will be college, for others their first real job, or their first home all their own, but what ever it may be you can be sure that our journey will not end even then. For there are other more distant horizons to strive toward and attain. As the editor-in-chief and business manager open that familiar east door through which you have passed so many thousands of times, they present to you, in the name of the Memories staff of 1952, this record of our school year. As you turn its pages they will help you recall this small segment of your journey. J3te Scene . TVe See Student photographers took nearly all the pictures for this book. Dick Marconi and Tom Mair look on as Don Huminsky, under the focusing cloth, prepares to take a picture of a still-life subject. Larry Berg, Jim Calabro, Pauline Sandala, Jane Neff, and Bill Binder enjoy themselves in class while actually participating in a class activ- ity. They are tape recording a panel discussion in Mr. Osborn’s government class. Jack O’Neill, “Deadeye,” Jim Calabro, “Lil,” and Larry Berg, “Two Gun Pete,” are shown here during one of their famous “Dead-eye” skits. They were among the highlights of “Yohan’s Follies.” A few of the couples from the huge crowd attending the “Leap Year Dance” after the Lowell game are enjoying themselves. After asking the boys for dates, the girls had the double pleasure of asking the hoys to dance, too. Todd Branson of WWCA, interviews Coach Schmidt, with Gene Watts also of WWCA and Jim Behrends tape-recording the pep session be- fore the LaCrosse basketball game. The record- ing was broadcast the morning of the Hobart vs. Emerson basketball game in the sectional tourna- ment. . . . Larry Berg, Arlene Thompson, Jack O’Neill, Shirley Ranipke, Fat Tarkelly, Marilyn Thornton, and Jim Calahro. The last Friday of every month we meet an assortment of odd characters in the halls — it’s a senior hobo day. Nancy Buckreus, Wayne Markward, and John Findling expertly carry their trays filled with eye- appealing food to a resting place. Now can you understand their anxious looks? Mr. Buell Crum, Miss Joan Smith, Miss Doro- thy Thompson, and Jim Calabro. On Valentine’s Day the students of Hobart High School met a very entertaining English woman w r ho gave humor- ous comparisons between English and American life. Jack Teitge, John Uhles, Vivian De Mers, Pat Doolin, Jerry Govert, Shirley Sepke, and Don Lines. Every noon hour some students give up their lunch hour for the convenience of the students with “a sw ' eet tooth.” All Seniors! Dick Marconi, Bill Cope, Ray Upthegrove, Dick Ehrhardt, Larry Berg, Jim Davis, Tom Diener, Bill Binder, and Jim Calabro gath- ered in the senior high school locker room to catch up on the latest gossip. Evelyn Wojtowicz, Wanda Beatty, Alice Muir, Olga Oslizlo, Gay Stafford, Joan Lovadinovich, Marie Muir, Joan Wronko, and Frances Bysiek make up one of the many groups whose favorite place for catching up on the news is one of the rails in front of school. All Juniors! Wait — one senior sneaked in! A favorite gathering place for the boys in the morning is around the trophy case. Can it be that they’re admiring the trophies or is the atmosphere pleasanter? Amelia Trusky, Lenore Krause, Jackie Mills, Marlene Baier, Beverly Dutkovich, Hazel Trusky, Clara Vargas exchange latest “news bits” while busily finishing the remains of their lunches. 0 0 0 Dick Marconi and Nedra Ross on the purple ticket and Kay Keller and Jim Calabro on the gold ticket were the combatants in a hot campaign for mayor and clerk-treasurer last fall. Jim and Kay were victorious. The freshmen win first prize! With their orig- inal homecoming display the freshmen out-did even the upper classmen in lawn displays this year. The five dollars will be put in the treasury for future use in class activities. One of the highlights of the 1952 school year was the voting machine which Mr. Osborn dem- onstrates to Marilyn Goodwin. Juniors and seniors were permitted to use this machine to vote for mayor, clerk-treasurer and home room representa- tives. Ray Marconi, Gary Soap Box Derby champion, smiles happily as he makes last minute prepara- tions for the final inspection of his racer, which took second place at the National Final in Akron, Ohio. ‘S ' uxuieti Our Preaeut Marlene Baier, Nancy Stanley, and Elaine Kline ponder over their budgets in the third hour ad- vanced typing class. “Why can’t we erase on legal documents?” Joanna Jendrzejewski, Donna Leonard, and Al- lan Craig unmercifully dismantle “Oscar,” biology class mascot. “Oscar” helps them understand bet- ter the anatomy and functions of the human body. Seventh grade science students, Judy Baillar- geon, Mr. Mart, Barbara Chirrila, Jon Ewigleben and Wayne Cardwell dissect a calf’s head as part of a class activity. Rosa Reyes at the easel and Dorothy Sprusan- sky at the table enjoy themselves working with oil paints. Oil painting is one of the required proj- ects of the advanced art students. Gerald Fitzgerald, Jim Whittaker, Bob Beckett, Tom Burke, Bill Brown, and Nancy Wagoner pre- paring to dramatize the radio play “The Snow Goose” in junior English class, complete with sound effects. Sandra Scharbach, Jim Behrends, Keith Ben- son, and Nancy Buckreus absorbed in the fascin- ating process of distilling water. Mr. Packham explains the operation of the wood lathe to John Brush and Dick Leonard, two general shop boys. Whom have you met at Hobart High during this school year? We’ve had the pleasure of having as companions on our journey two students, with such pleas- ant personalities, from foreign countries — Longin Grezczuk who came to Hobart from Poland by way of South Africa and England, and Bunny Wambolt from Can- ada. Not only have our fellow travelers come from abroad but also from nine other states and many neighboring schools. “Peafrle 7De TJieet... As they buckled down to their books, students had a number of new faculty names to learn. Miss Barbara Bush was directing traffic in the cafeteria while Mr. Tom Bishop hunted for a corner to call his own in the busy band portable. Mr. Wayne Collins checked and re-arranged tools in the machine shop and meanwhile Mr. John Radovic was already running off office record blanks in the print shop. Upstairs Miss Wahneta Mullen was hanging Spanish posters and pictures in room 302, while Mr. Charles McMurtry had been settled in the vice-principal’s glassed-in corner for several weeks. Many times our most perplexing problems have been solved by some member of the faculty who was willing to spend some of his time listening to our difficulties and then offering us helpful advice. Yes, we’ve met many very wonderful people. Our friendly mayor stops to visit at the study hall door with the four class presidents, even as all of us have visited with our friends in that familiar spot. May this help to remind us of the many friendly people at Hobart High. Our rfcCmiutatrattou anct HARLIE GARVER Superintendent of Schools EUGENE W. WISE Director of Attendance and Child Welfare Welcome on Our Journey Mr. Buell Crum, principal, discusses the duties of vice-principal with Mr. Charles Mc- Murtry, who came to Hobart this year from Kouts. As vice-principal Mr. McMurtry is in charge of all guidance and activities and in addition is a senior sponsor and teacher of a health and safety class. Mildred Lenburg, bookkeeper; Grace Zula, fi- nancial secretary; Flo Pugh, secretary are in charge of the clerical duties in the superintendent’s office. Mr. Howard Yunker, junior high principal; Miss Do rothy Thompson, dean of girls; and Mr. Russell Deal, dean of boys, are always ready to help students with their problems. Will we ever forget our long wait for them and the screams of disappointment when they finally arrived? French blue and silver! Ugh! “7 tead Ttot jOe TVeCl- TOo ' ut This school year was a mad whirl of money making activities. We started by taking over the concessions at the last two home football games. This was a stepping stone to handling concessions at all the basketball games, and sponsoring several after-game dances. Our junior play this year, “Ever Since Eve,” added another $145 to our treasury. When the class rings came on November 30, there were a few gloomy juniors as 43 of the rings were de- layed in the mail. At last came the moment when we could open the doors of the prom to our guests the seniors. As we go along our way, we not only take the main road of academics, but also find many pleasant side roads of social activities. The first football game with Froebel and the first basketball game with Wheeler found the teams in fine condition and raring to go, and the students — they were ready and more than willing to back the teams to victory. This year marked a splendid improvement in school spirit at Hobart. Whether the game was at home or away, we always had an overflow crowd. Yes, the students were completely behind the teams! • While eagerly anticipating the coming sport events, there were also other detours along our journey — the band’s New Year’s Eve dance, the Debuteen’s semi-formal, the Boosters “Jeans and Socks” dance, the Student Council’s “Winter Wonderland,” the different class parties, the Junior-Senior Prom, and just meeting the gang up town and having fun. So we had fun on all these side trips, but what about the main road? Class work didn’t seem too inviting at first, but it really was fun, learning with the other students and sharing their experiences along with our own. The boy in health class who just couldn’t trace a drop of blood through the body . . . that girl in biology who couldn’t stand the sight or smell of a frog in formaldehyde . . . those two partners in Chemistry who, no matter how r they tried, couldn’t get the chlorine experiment, and when they did get it — oh, what a smell! . . . the students in Senior English who w r ondered why they were there ... all added humor to our journey. WORTHINGTON Director ‘ytyafa ' lt The band has been one of the most important parts of Hobart High School life for 27 years. After a series of performances at home football games the highlight of the marching season was the winning of the sweepstakes trophy at the Marching Band Contest in Valparaiso. Then they made a spectacular showing with four other schools from Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana in the “Parade of Champions” held in Brickie Bowl. The concert band opened its season with a Fall “Pop” Concert on November 16. Leonard Falcone from Michigan State University was the featured baritone soloist and conductor. In their Twenty-seventh Anniversary Concert on March 14, the band featured Thor Johnson, conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony. This year brought a number of “firsts” for our band. They had their first assistant conductor, Thomas FLUTES Barkham, Sally Melonashi, Dorothy Kostka, Darlene Carlson, Janet Shinabarger, Susan OBOES Matovich, Edwin Jackson, Tommy CLARINETS Cardwell. The money for this tour, which totaled near $2,500, was raised by the band members themselves. Our band was also featured in an article in American Magazine. Dr. Edwin Franko Goldman of New York City recommended it for an article on one of the most outstanding high school bands in the country. The color film taken by the Audio-Visual Depart- ment of Indiana University last year, came out in December. Plans were begun by the same people to make more movies of our band in the spring. The band also gave their first public New Year’s Eve party at Liberty school gymnasium. This is the first season the Brickies have taken top honors in the Calumet conference since its reorganization in 1949. Their first encounter was a 13-0 shutout at the hands of the Froebel Blue Devils. The Deal-men then traveled to East Gary for a 21-13 win over the Eagles. Back in JIM CALABRO BILL COPE and DON HUMINSKY Left Halfback Left Halfback and Right Tackle Brickie bowl Carroll Kelly led the Brickies to a 14-0 victory over the Lowell Red Devils by scoring two touch- downs. In their next tilt they crushed the Vikings of Valparaiso 32-0. As Arlene Thompson was crowned Homecoming Queen, our gridders presented her with a 34-6 win over Crown Point. On the following week Brickie stalwarts journeyed to Griffith to eke out a 14-13 victory with Don Huminsky kicking the two points-after-touchdown. Don Huminsky suffered a broken leg in the last period of the game, and was lost to the team for the rest of the season. Then the Deal-men played the Gary Edison Blazers on Tolleston Field where our boys edged out a 7-6 vic- tory. Back home they mauled the Troopers of Gary Wirt with an overwhelming score of 45-7 in what proved to be the last game of the season. Due to a heavy snow storm the game with Portage was cancelled. At the close of the season. Bill Cope, senior halfback, and Bernard Drummond, senior center, were chosen for the first Calumet Conference team; Dick Marconi, sen- ior quarterback, was chosen for the second team, with Don Huminsky, senior; Phil Yates, Joe Matan, Don Howell, and Carroll Kelly, juniors; Don Anderson and Eugene Clemens, sophomores, receiving honorabl men- tion. Bill Cope also received honorable mention for the All-State team. Broda is the second Hobart runner to remain un- defeated. Bill Greene was the first to turn the task in 1948. Other Brickies scored as follows: Fred Roach (senior) 35; Wayne Neill (sophomore) 29; John Mosley (freshman) 3 4; Charles Valovich (sophomore) 2l £ and Don Van Fleet (freshman) 2 %. Minus the services of Edward Boone, star freshman from the 1950 squad who had moved to Arkansas and returned too late to participate in the meets; sophomore Johnny Allen who withdrew from school, the Brickies fell short of their am- bition of making the trip to the state meet for their fifth straight year when they missed the first three places needed to qualify in the sectional meet. Hobart finished in fourth place. However, the Brickie hill and dalers hope to be in the thick of the state championship scramble in 1952 with a fine squad in prospect. LEADING HARRIER Scoring 110 points as a freshman during the 1951 track season to be named honorary co-captain along with senior Bruce Johnston is a distinction no other Hobart freshman track man has ever attained. Competing in the mile run, broad jump and mile relay, Broda was a consistent winner for the Brickies. This season in cross-country, Broda, again honorary cap- tain, led Brickie harriers with 45 points to a successful season. He was the number one runner for Hobart in every meet. Broda should be one of Coach Kurth’s brightest track stars in the seasons that follow. 1951 Cross Country Record Chesterton (21) Valparaiso (24) Hobart (15) Gary Roosevelt (43) Hobart (49) Hammond Hobart (20) ToIIeston (55) 11th Annual Hobart Invitational Meet (8th place) Hobart Hobart Culver Military Academy (54) Lew Wallace Emerson Hobart (19) Hobart (26) Dyer South Side Fort Wayne (36) (33) (46) ( 68 ) (62) (36) (29) Fifth Annual Calumet Conference Meet (First Place) Fifth Annual (Hobart) IHSAA Sectional Meet (Fourth Place) (Low score wins in cross-country races) VARSITY - RESERVE BASKETBALL SQUAD First Row: Jasper Hopkins, Ted Milenkoff, Woody Stafford, Curt Nelson, Wayne Neill, John O’Hara, Bob Ewing, Charles Kleiber, Ralph Sanders, Don Conley, Jim Crum. During the regular season they com- piled 8 wins and 11 losses. In the sectional the hoopsters almost upset favored Gary Emerson, but fell short 46-42. After the season was completed, seniors Ron- ald Kaiser and Ray Upthegrove were elected co- captains. The highlight of the season came when the Brickies again copped the Calumet Conference track title in both the varsity and reserve meets. The field was composed of ten teams. The thinlies also won the Gary Edison relays for the fourth straight year, beating a field of eight teams. In the sectionals held at Horace Mann High School in Gary, Hobart placed fourth behind Gary Roosevelt, Gary Froebel, and Gary Emerson. The only individual winner from Hobart was Bruce Johnston in the pole vault. Frank Broda and Bill Cope each placed second in the mile and the quarter mile. Johnston took second place at the regionals held at Lafayette, but failed to place in the state finals at Indianapolis. Seniors who graduated from last year’s squad are Bruce Johnston, Roy Dixon, Jim Ewigleben, John Helfrich, Bill Matsey, John Price and Bud Fahey. Expected to form the nucleus of this year’s squad are Bill Cope, Frank Broda, Dick Marconi, Don Anderson, Edward Boone, Keith Benson, Eu- gene Clemens, Bernard Drummond, Joe Hermann, Don Jelinek, Wayne Neill, Fred Roach and Elmer Westen. 1.
