■ ke Stony Oun Sckoa£ MEMORIES Margie Johnson, Editor-in-Chief Gwendolyn Gee, Business Manager Hobart High School Hobart, Indiana c TKe Setting Did you ever think of our school as a story? Probably not, but actually it has setting, characters, and plot. The setting is Hobart High itself — the familiar halls and classrooms, the portables and Brickie Bowl, the tree lined walk in front. The people of our school as they study, work, and play together are characters in an intricate plot. This plot has elements of excitement, achieve- ment, and just plain fun, for it involves the activities that we all enjoy. With this combination — the setting, the characters, and the plot we present the story of 1950-1951 in Hobart High School. The band portable . . . scene of the hours of practice that make possible our champion- ship bands. The locker room (Grand Cen- tral Station of Hobart High). Do you think all those kids will get through that little door? The walls are brown, but we call it the “Blue room” tra- dition you know . . . After their race to the cafeteria D. Leonard, J. Sansone, and W. Bussie race to see who can eat the most bread. C ? am.iii.an. Scene A busy hour in our well equipped machine shop . . . Don’t they look industrious? It’s time to go home! Those familiar yellow buses are a welcome sight at the end of a long school day Take a long, long look at the char- acters that make up the story of H . H. S. Here are those favorite teach- ers who made class so interesting — the fellow with the sense of humor that kept the crowd laughing — the best pal with whom we enjoyed our high school days. Some of these peop- ple will be just fond memories in years to come. As we turn the fol- lowing pages let us recall memories of 1951, which make up our story. Since they made the years at Hobart High more pleasant and safe, they are important characters in our story. Paul Sohn, the cop on the corner, keeps us safe during that noon hour rush. Emil Strom, the kindly old gentleman usually seen with his pipe and broom, is 72 years old, the oldest janitor on the staff and well known to all Hobart students. Mrs. Thomas Schroll, public librarian, has been a friend to Hobart students ever since she came to the library across the street in 1945. Herman Wesley, whom we will remember for his bright smile, has been in this school system longer than any other janitor. For 27 years he has been pushing his broom around Hobart High. These jovial ladies are the cafeteria cooks who serve us every day. Mrs. Arthur Balitz, Mrs. Frank Graff, Mrs. Emma Shrock, not shown Mrs. Ed- ward Dykhuis. As we sat in classes there were serious moments of thought and contemplation of horizons. Then there were those bursts of sudden laughter when the teacher joined in gay moments of fun. These are ordi- nary things, but they are part of the plot which made our highschool days a story to remember. Organizations and sports filled the days with lively interest, lending excitement to the plot. Let’s look back on the games and dances, concerts and plays, classes and convos of 1950 - 1951. WORTHINGTON Director Hoban.t For 26 years the Hobart High School Band has worked unceasingly to keep their musicianship at a high standard, William Revelli, Bertram Francis, and Frederick Ebbs ail added their individual abilities to making a famous band, and now Richard Worthington, an alumnus of the band, is carrying on the traditions set for him by these talented men. The first of the year started off with a blare of color and briskness as the marching band snapped through their formations. Next came the concert season with the band tackling numbers like “Capriccio Italien” by Tschaikowski or “Death and Transfiguration” by Richard Strauss that would stump most college bands. Solo and ensemble contests offered another challenge BASS CLARINETS Erma Crum Charles Kegebein BASSOON John Daniels David Trenary ALTO SAXOPHONE Sam Preissler Nancy Toering John Munyan TENOR SAXOPHONE Ronald Fraser Jacque Neff CLARINETS Pat Watkins Joan Dignin Bob Miles John Findling Greta Otto Joan Mitchell Tom Mair Kent Carlson Yvonne Stewart Lorelei Calloway Rims Barber Harold Huering Tom Hartin Helen Ahlgrim Jackie Ahlgrim OBOES Bob Moon Eddie Matovich Tom Jackson FLUTES Mariel Farlow Sally Barkham Dorothy Melonashi Darlene Kostka Janet Carlson ALTO CLARINETS Shirley Schmidt Glen Cox Sckoofi Concent (Eta rid! which was met and conquered in the traditional Hobart way. And then it was time for that all-important tour to Washington, D.C., several eastern states and Canada. Maybe not all the members shook hands with the Pres- ident, but that certainly didn’t spoil the success of their trip. Now the year has come to an end. Seniors who have toiled six years as part of this organization will now be leaving. They will carry with them, how ' ever, many pleasant memories of the parts, big or little, that they played in the band’s growing reputation for getting a lot of fine things accomplished by talent, persever- ance, and just plain hard work. “For a successful band it takes 5 per- cent inspiration, and 95 percent per spiration” — R. The well-known and beautiful strains of Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” swelled out clear and strong last November 14 as the Hobart High School Chorus once more thrilled the audience with a wonderful performance. The choir has been especially busy this year enter- taining for local groups — PTA, Women’s Club, and several others — while the student body enjoyed their music at the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter con- vocations.
