OAi As Hobart High School Hobart, Indiana NANCY BAUMANN, Editor-in-Chief BETTY FLEMING, Business Manager Here we are, the last of May, another year has passed. Just one of the many years at school that youll always remem- ber . . . Could you ever forget them? Memories . . . ah, yes, the little things and the big things . . . the excitement of the first day back at school . . . seeing your friends from last year and meeting new ones . . . the rush to the cafeteria at noon . . . the pigeons cooing . . . the creaky worn- out stairs . . . Remember the days when you got whiffs of that wonderful aroma of food in the halls? . . . those home-ec girls really know how to cook. Then again did you ever smell that not-so-wonderful aroma 2 around 208? Many times I’ve wondered what those mad little scientists were con- cocting . . . Do you recall the vacations? • . . oh, those lovely vacations! . , . the dances and parties . . . the exams . . . the annual Junior-Senior picnic . . . and what fun we had at the Junior-Senior Prom . . . IP ill you ever forget that? Then senior week came ivith all its functions . . . honor day convo . . . senior convo . . . senior breakfast . . . and sneak day. And finally the long awaited days arrived . . . bacca- laureate and graduation . . . Some were smiling . . . some had tears in their eyes. Through the pages of this book you can re-live it all. 3 BUELL C. Hats sailed in the air. Happy shrieks were heard. Yes, the Hobart High School Marching Band had won the sweepstakes award in the state marching band contest and its mem- bers were celebrating. This surely was a won- derful way to end an extremely successful marching season. In a few more weeks it was back to work, so the hand started to rehearse for their fall “Pop” concert in December. Another success. Between concerts the members kept busy playing for many civic events, such as the Boy Scout Jamboree, teachers’ conventions, a Garden Club program, and very, very busy with just plain practicing. The band also attended the state and district solo and ensemble contests in February with the usual good results. After the mid-winter concert in March, they set out on their tour to New Orleans with high hopes for having both successful concerts and a lot of fun. They returned with dreams come true. The Spring concert followed and soon after came graduation. The seniors are now alumni, and those who are left behind are thinking, it is sure, that the band will never really be the same without them. But the Hobart High School Band will never actually change. It will always go on carrying the tradition of good music and bring- ing to our school the fame of its successes. Hilmer Jacobson, gifted with the art of music, in his first year at Hobart High School, has put forth all of his talent to build an outstanding a cappella choir for Hobart High. This choir, the first a cappella choir Hobart Has ever had, has participated in many programs this year. Members took part in the February contests in Crown Point, Parent Teachers Association meetings, Christmas Vesper services with the band, programs for the Women’s Club, convocations, church services, the February 24 radio program over WWCA, and commencement and baccalaureate services. Mr. Jacobson is to be complimented on the fine progress the choir is making. He is building an outstanding vocal department which in the near future shows promise of being one of Indiana’s best. They are : Ted Kraw- czyk, Walter Krawczyk, and Reinhold Hall- men. Thomas O’Keefe and James Cooley dem onstrate the process of making a blue-print, Mr. Smetzer instructs James Cooley and Tom Cox on how to make an architectural drawing. Four boys of the Building Trades Class make a picnic table for the city park. Those working are: Jerry Christian, John Ksenak, Tom Machin, and James Bristol. Ronnie Stienbrenner and Janet Carlson admire the different projects made in junior high social studies class. Ted Mioduski, Marshall Moreno and Jer- ry Waite look over the senior high art class projects. These were made of papier mache and covered with paint or cloth. Mrs. Mart took time out to demonstrate to the child care class how to bathe a baby. Those observing were: Carole Gilbert, Carol Athens, Beverly Dutkovich, the Schmidt children and Marilyn Emory. Georgia Lyman, Nancy Dault and Mary Banaski make a delicious dessert for the teachers’ noon luncheon. The junior high art classes also made papier mache projects. Those working are Mary Kurth, Ada Mae Pritchard, Beverly Mehalic, Elaine Richeson, and John Man- ning. In the background is Frank Broda. Two more advanced food class students are Dorothy McCumber and Dolores Mor- eno who are preparing a salad for the teachers’ noon luncheon. Another domestic art is clothing. Here Janice Hahn, Kally Mougros and Darlene Kostka cut out patterns while Doris Cullum sews her project together. Remember those thrilling moments when the whole crowd was brought to its feet during the Hobart-Merrillville game . . . One thing we’ll never forget - — - the first ti me in twenty-two hard- fought years that the Brickie Cagers went three consecutive games in the sectional tourney . . . things like these will live on in the minds of Hobart students. 51 CROSS COUNTRY Top row: — J. Both run- ners led the Brickie pack home in four meets each while Hugh Brown captured first place honors on two occasions. Honorary captain honors for the season generally go to the boy who scores the highest total of points for the season. Because only one point separated Strehl and Davis and Don Davis’s 6th place showing in the state championship meet was the best ever attained by a Hobart runner, both boys were crowned co-captains for 1949. Other varsity individual scores were as follows: Bill Matsey 31, Ed Alexander 13 , Don H. Brown 12 , Palmer Warded 10, Robert Goodwin 9 1 4, Eddie Bonzcek 214, and Richard Bonner 1% points. Hammond was the only school to win from the Brickie Harriers in regular meet competition, their first such loss in three years. After win- ning the sectional meet for the last two ' years, Hobart finally dropped to third place but still qualified for the state meet behind Hammond and East Chicago Roosevelt. The Brickies gained revenge over their sectional conquerors in the state meet by placing 7th in the field while Hammond took 9th and East Chicago Roosevelt placed 13th. Anderson Indians proved the state champs. With Bill Strehl, Don Davis, Bill Matsey, Eddie Bonzcek, and Richard Bonner as a nucleus for next year’s team, Coach Kurth believes the Brick- ies will continue to lead the Calumet area as they have the past three seasons in the hill and dale sport. fledt m £tate CnMA Meet Don Davis has participated in cross country for three years. He ran both of the sectional champion- ship meets which Hobart won. Don is now a junior and will be eligible to run on next year’s cross country team. By taking part in only cross country and track, he is able to give his best to each sport. He was co-captain with Bill Strehl of the 1949 cross country team. By placing 6th among 142 top state runners in the state meet at Indianapolis last fall, Don has made a better showing than any other Hobart boy who has ever run in a state cross country meet. 53 fyotdkcul Pipkin PacJzincf. Pdickied Place The smallest Brickie team in years lined up in Brickie Bowl for the opening gun of the 1949 season, faced by a husky fighting eleven from Froebel which out-weighed them several pounds to the man. Although the Brickies lost this game by a score of 32 to 0, they bounced right back to ' start a winning streak as they met East Gary and defeated them 14 to 7. In their third game they defeated Lowell 33 to 20. With three wins and one loss to their credit they were tied by the Vikings of Valparaiso 7 to 7. Meccmd in Calumet CeMfeAcnce The next two games were won without the opponents scoring a point, the first, Crown Point, by a score of 19 to 0, followed by Griffith 21 to 0. The next contest was the most important of all the games in the season, a chance to win the Calu- met Conference championship, but Merrillville won with a 7 to 6 victory. For the last game of the season the Brickies journeyed to Terre Haute to play Garfield High School and took a 13 to 25 defeat which ended the season, and all high school football for the seniors.
