The Vocal department under the capable direction of Miss Evelyn Deardorff, has been strengthened and developed into a leading force for good music. Members of the chorus have appeared on many programs for school and public affairs. At Christ- mas they joined with the band in presenting a concert and convocation of seasonal music. In W the spring a joint concert by the band and chorus was given for the public. This year the chorus helped broaden Hobart's music interests by sponsoring a concert of the na- tionally known Baldwin-Wallace College Choir. Entering the state vocal contest for the first time this year, the chorus placed in the second division. Page Thirty Eight Some of thc nienibers of the Chorus are shown hard at work at the pop- corn machine, a concession they hold the greater part ot' the ya-ar to help finance the purchase oi' black robes for their group- Miss Deardorff has spent a great deal of time working with the high school chorus and in order for them to present a more harmonious appearance, the group has worked hard all year to purchase bllck iobes. In February a bake sale and card party was sponsored and the popcorn concession was theirs for most of the year. . Undefeated until the hill-and-dalers took part in the final state championship meet, the local harriers raced through all opposition in the Calumet area and added South Side of Fort Wayne to their victory string to take in the best of the outside opponents that could be scheduled. Climaxing a schedule of six dual and triangu- lar meets as warmups before the championship meets, the Brickie runners copped the Lake-Porter conference trophy for the second straight year, annexed their first Hobart Invitational trophy in eight years running, and then posted their second successive IHSAA sectional victory to give them a mark of nine straight triumphs during the cam- paign. Things went bad at the state- meet with several runners getting sick, and one of the top seven runners not able to make the trip. Consid- ering all angles, the Brickie gallopers were fort- eadeca unate to save eighth place in the final state rank- ing. The top eight runners for the season, with Bill Greene winning the honorary captaincy with the highest total points scored, ranked in the following order: Bill Greene, Don Brown, Don Davis, Bill Matsey, Harry Bonner, Bill Strehl, Richard Bonner and Bob CRedD Goodwin. i I Bill Greene Cross Country Captain l':igv Fifty 'l'lli'm-0 Hvziiisg l'lmrle-mi Vain Iilziircum: Mau' dill priiuiliil uid NI'ix'ur ICHSS 'l'l'1'Sl1'l' Y K' A , Thi- 11111-1-ii zinvl In-r 4-uurl: Mziry Stringer, Evelyn Evans, Clarice Vliwiimvi-Ili, and f'ilill'it'llr Yun Bi2liI't'Hlll. These hopes were cut short, however, as the season got underway with three unexpected losses to Wheeler C41-347, Lowell C40-389 and East Gary Q35-345. The Briekies finally cashed their first win of the season on January 3, defeating Dyer on the Indian hardwood 38 to 26. In section play the Brickies drew Whiting Oil- ers, the top team along with Horace Mann of Gary in the Norhern Indiana Conference, and went down to defeat by the score of 49 to 35. Big Gene Mack proved to be the best offensive man for the Brickies all season, getting a total of 216 points on 54 field goals and 62 free throws. Our first big party if if that year was a Sadie Hawkins dance. Charlene Van Blaircom and Leon Mehalic were crowned Sadie Hawkins and Li'l Abner. How can we raise money for our junior Prom next year? was the main topic of discussion during our sophomore year. Under the leadership of our president, Stewart Mattix, we raised money from the sale of magazine subscriptions as a starter toward our prom fund. The next year we supplemented this with money brought in by the sale of pencils. Juniors! At last we could go to the prom. After committees were appointed by Calista Bussie, president, and the other class officers, our prom theme was chosen, Candy Lane of Memories. Between prom plans and presentingour junior play A Little Honey , we took time out for a class function, a semi-formal dance. But among our many joys we can remember when our hearts were saddened by the death of three of our classmatesg Jean Yates, during our freshman yearg Robert Ridley when we were sophomores, and Polly Ann Lesko in our senior year. Now here we are seniorsg all 126 together for the first time in home room with Bill Stonebraker leading us in our final year. Our fall function, Mardi Gras, and senior play Keep Moving were the high- lights of the year. We distinguished ourselves from the other classes this year by wearing our b-right yellow '49er sweatshirts. On sneak day we took a trip to Turkey Run. Only a few more days and we will be saying farewell to our teachers and classmates and will be marching to the strains of Pomp and Circumstancef' Wido Olson and Glee Huge as valedictorian and salutatorian will express the feelings of all of us at graduation.
