Upholding the high standards laid down before them by musicians of previous years, the band this year put on spectacular performances at the football games and thrilled music lovers with fine music' throughout the year. p On the football field they amazed spectators by making their formations in the dark outlined by small lights upon their hats. Percy Grainger, world renowned composer-pian- ist, appeared as guest conductor at the annual mid- Page Thirty Six winter concert. He directed the band in some of his own compositions including: Lincolnshire Posy and the Morris Dance, Country Gardens. In April the band further spread the name of Hobart High School by taking an all Indiana tour, playing in almost every section of the state. Among their presentations on this tour were Wagner's Siegfried's Journey To The Rhine, Sibe- lius' Va1se Tristeg , a new and clever novelty, J in- gles All The Wayv by Cable, and Zampa-Overture by Herold. This year the chorus classes under the capable direction of Miss Alexandria Psiris have made great strides in their endeavors in the music field. We are happy to know that the chorus itself is the largest Hobart High School has ever had. The members of the chorus have sung at contests, concerts, and for different organizations of the city throughout the year. This year, in addition to their regular Christmas concert, the chorus for the first time shared the program with the band at the later's spring concert. Hobart can well be proud of its chorus which has come so far in the com- paratively short time it has been organized. These are the persons who rendered special service to the chorus. To the left are Bob Lundy, tenor, and Norma Dowd, alto, who blend their voices with the chorus and also step forth to sing solos. In the picture to the right are Lois Hughes, soprano solo- ist, and Wilda Olson who plays for convocations and provides the instru- mental background for the group. The Junior High Girls' Glee Club is composed of thirty girls from the seventh and eighth grades. This group has developed well in three part singing. Barbara Dudgeon, Jane Neff, and Carole Gilbert, are only a few of the girls who show promise of filling the places that will be vacated by graduating soloists. It should be pointed out that three of the four losses were handed out by Gary teams, who proved too tough competition for our Brickies. Against schools their own size, the Brickies won three, lost one and tied two. The season started when Froebel beat us 20-0. The next week the Brickies traveled to George- town, Illinois, where they battled to a 7-7 tie under a driving rain. Hobart got their first win Page Fifty Two when they beat Lowell 6-0. The following week they took Rensselaer by the same score. Next came the Crown Point Bulldogs, who proved easy prey as the Brickies rolled over them to a tune o 19-7. Panthers of Griffith held the Brickies to a 7-7 tie, and the following week the Tolleston Blue Raiders got a 39-0 win. Horace Mann was next. They handed the Brickies a 24-O defeat and Valpo finished the season with a 12-6 victory over the Hobart boys. 63 4' :P J' X 'J on ,- ON 9 0 'Ni lwllwlur -..ng Dan Vladetich, left and Pete Peterson, right, both returning lettermen, were elected co-captains of the football team. They both played bang-up games at tackle this season. Danny played fullback on the freshman team and the following year was changed to tackle by Coach Wilson. This year he lived up to predictions by playing some fine defen- sive football. 'fPete'i came out for football in his junior year and quickly got himself a varsity berth, which showed he had the ability to play that rugged tackle position, FOOTBALL COACHES Russ Deal, right, assistant football coach, came to Hobart in the fall of '47. Deal captained the '45 Indi- ana University Big Nine champs. After returning from the service he was graduated from there in 1947. Alvin Schmidt, left, reserve coach, played end for the Tolleston High School football team. After his graduation from Tolleston he attended Valparaiso University where he was a three year letter winner. Tommy Moore, center, head coach, was graduated from Earlham College. Upon graduation he was given the job of assistant coach in charge of the backfield at Earlham. After two years there he went to Westfield, Indiana, his home town, where he became head coach of football and basketball. Tommy came to Hobart in 1940. He had a fair season that year and in 1942 posted the best football record Hobart has ever had: nine wins and only one loss. As a preseason conditioner for all types of sports, cross-country running has no equals in pro- ducing a rugged, superb physical condition for excellent performance in athletic competition. Running cross-country is rugged work and is the greatest developer of the vital system of the heart, lungs, stomach and legs, without which an athlete is a mere layman. It also develops courage, stick- to-it-ive-ness, stamina and endurance to a higher degree than possibly any other athletic endeavor. This year's Hobart squad included all boys in- terested in becoming better runners and also those lads who merely used the activity as a stepping stone for preseason basketball conditioning. The schedule and scores of meets in which the Brickie hill-and-dalers took part are listed as follows: Page Fifty Six VARSITY SQUAD Hobart C151 Froebel C501 Hobart C191 Lew Wallace C521 Valparaiso C691 Hobart C171 Hammond High 391 Hammond Tech C321 Gary Roosevelt C391 Hobart C521 Hobart C231 Valparaiso C491 Portage C591 Hobart C191 Tolleston C391. ' Eeww Cross-country running, long recognized by many coaches as a fine fall sport activity, was added for the first time' to the Indiana High School Athletic association sports calendar in 1947 by its sponsoring of section and state tournament meets. Hobart was given recognition by the IHSAA for its record of conducting local meets by being named host school for one of the seven sectional centers in the state. With the Cressmoor Country club selected as a site for the sectional meet, a course of about two miles was laid out over the rolling fairways of the local golf course. Thirteen of the stronger teams in the Calumet area filed entries as a challenge for the first IHSAA sectional crown. The Brickie harriers, consistently near the top in all their other meet performances, lined up for the race with a seven man squad composed of James Red Dinsmore and Darrell Trager, seniorsg Bill Greene and Bill Stonebraker, juniorsg Don Brown, soph- omoreg and Bill Matsey and Don Davis, freshmen. The finish of the race with the first five runners of each school counting in the final point standing was a great showing of team balance and scoring as Dinsmore placed 6th, Greene llth, Matsey 20th, Trager 23rd, Stonebraker 27, and Davis 28th in the race of 91 contestants. Hobart's five-man total of 87 points proved the low score of all times, giving them the honor of winning the first sectional victory in school history. Hammond Tech placed second with 93 points and Gary Edison, third, with 104 points to . round out the three teams selected to compete for state honors in Indianapolis. HOBART SECTIONAL h 1. Low- ell's Red Devils and East Gary's Eagles handed the yet un-organized Ho-Hi lads successive defeats in hard fought games. Dyer Indians, next foe of the Brickies, found the local quintet on the hot side in this contest as they hit from all angles for a 52 to 27 score. Two more victories followed on the schedule, Hobart handing the Chesterton Tro- jans their first defeat of the season on the Porter county hardwood, 30 to 21, and then taking the measure of Gary Edison Blazers on the home court 40 to 34. Griffith Panthers nosed out a victory in the final eight seconds of play 39 to 37 to bring the pre-holiday schedule to a close. Panthers of Griffith proved the Brickie nemesis for the third time stopping the Hobart attack with a 57 to 49 defeat. Crown Point Bulldogs were helpless as Gene Mack paced the Brickies with 22 points in a one- sided victory 68 to 43. In the final game of the season Chesterton Trojans tried hard to get their first win over Hobart in the last eleven games played between both schools, but fell before a last quarter drive that put the Brickies on top 45 to 40. The Hobart basketeers had chalked up a record of 12 victories in the 19 starts. Whiting Oilers spoiled the sectional hopes of the Brickies in a first round game in the East Chicago Roosevelt gym as they gained a first quar- ter lead of 20 to 9 and then rolled up a final 58 to 42 triumph. Bob Goodwin with a ten point average for 20 games paced all Brickie scorersg Darrell Trager was selected honorary captain for the season by his matesg and George Sweat and Gene Mack, returning lettermen for next year, were chosen to co-captain the Brickie quintet in 1948-49.
