Looking through these pages, Hobart students and alumni of many years past may be reminded of their high school days. Other genera- tions have walked these same narrow halls, climbed these same worn, squeaky stairs and sat in the same class rooms. They too have clanged the tower bell after a victory, trailed down the fire escape hopefully looking for a blaze and tried to study us music drifted in from the band portable. Every sen- ior class carries away with it many of the same memories. A high school is a bridge spanning the years. Every time a person looks at the building and rooms he recalls mem- ories of his very own school life. We hope this annual will remind you of some of your own experiences. Gilbert Ittel, editor-in-chief. With William R. Kendall, high school principal, this hard working group handles the major problems of high school life. Left to right are: Mary M. EBBS Director THE HOBART HIGH The school year of 1946-47 will prob- ably remain in our memories for some time to come as the most colorful in the history of the Hobart High School Con- cert Band. From the first day of school it was apparent that this would be the year of big events. Climaxing a brilliant marching season were performances for Big Nine football games at Ann Arbor, Michigan and Bloomington, Indiana. Over 100,000 ipeople witnessed these games and cheered the band for its thrilling, routines on melodies by Victor Herbert. Two weeks after the football season ended, the fall pop concert was given, and a few days later the band journeyed to Fort Wayne for a joint concert and clinic with the famous Fort Wayne North Side High School A Capella choir. Fin- ishing the old year with a Christmas con- vocation and starting the new year with a concert at Ross Township, the organiza- tion turned to intensive work in prepara- tion for its winter concert and the visit of the great Dr. Edwin Franko Goldman. New adventure for the Hobart band fol- lowed with an eastern tour in April. The climax of a number of thrilling appear- BAND OFFICERS Seated: T. Bishop, N. Pyatt, C. Erwin, A. Abel. J. Shurr. S. Although it had ap- peared many times throughout the West and Middle-west, this marked the band’s first appearance east of Ohio. Return- ing home on April 20. the band immedi- ately entered contest competition, and shortly after closed the school year with a spring concert. Yes, the school year of 1947 has kept the Hobart band very busy, but through it all has been the privilege of repre- senting a fine school, a fine community, and a great field of endeavor — music en- deavor. Popularly known as ‘Red’ to most of us, his smiling person- ality influences everyone. Hobart’s Brickies, after trying for years to get into the charmed circle of tournament champions, saw their dreams come true in the tenth annual holiday tournament held in the Crown Point community building on January 3 and 4. In copping the tourney crown for the first time, the Brickies defeated DeMotte, Merrillville and Dyer in succession. In dual and triangular meets the Brickies temained undefeated, turning in victor- ies over Tolleston, Wirt. Crown Point. Michigan City. Valparaiso. Chesterton and Lew Wallace. In other large meets the short pants lads finished fourth in the LaPorte Carnival, Goshen Relays and IH.SAA Gary Sectional Meet, in the final State Meet the Brickies placed ninth among the 101 teams taking part. New school record marks were posted by athletes from the 1946 squad by sopho- more Carl Shield, Bill Crites, John Springman and the relay team of Chapman, Crites, K. Noel and Dinsmore. Bill Crites picking uip points m the 440 660. mile run and mile relay team, topped the list of point winners to gain the title of honorary captain.
