The pages of this hook were dam- aged by rain on road to bindery, through no fault of Hobart High School Press or Aurora staff. The Senior Class Of Hobart High School Presents AURORA OF 1944 Bugs Bunny used with the permission of Leon Schlesin- ger, Hollywood, California. All rights reserved. This yearbook is the memories of 1944. It is laughter, tears, and toil bound with care for you to keep. More than pictures and prints, it is a smoulder- ing hearth fire. We ask you take it from the shelf occasionally and let the glowing warmth of old friend- ships bring you back to Hobart High with the Aurora 1944. Wally Moll Editor-in-Chief With sincere gratitude and deep apprecia- tion for those who are in the armed forces of our country, we, the class of 1944, dedicate this issue of the Aurora. To those in the Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard — to all those in uniform — we feel indebted to you, for it is you who have inspired us to do more work and to attain greater goals. In pre- senting this book we offer one small part of the thanks that we never can hope to fully repay. Muriel Nagel Ad. Mgr. Ruth Balitz Bus. Mgr. Georgia King Circ. Mgr. Walter Zander Ass’t Ad. Mgr. Revelli, now Director of Bands at the University of Michigan. Dur- ing his ten years at Hobart, Mr. Revelli’s tireless energy and enthusiasm enabled him to build up a band which has enjoyed a nationwide reputa- tion ever since. He was followed in 1935 by Bertram Francis who ably carried on the traditions which had been so well established. The present conductor of the band is Frederick C. Ebbs who came to Hobart in 1940. Participating in contests all over the country, the Hobart Band has maintained a perfect record of first divisions since 1930 when the contest was held in Flint, Michigan. This gives the band one of the longest and most brilliant records of any school music organization in the country. The band itself generally averages about seventy players. The musicians come up through the Junior Band of about sixty, which in turn is fed by the 1 beginning instrumental classes. These classes are unique in that they meet every day just like an English or Arithmetic class. The beginning students rent school instruments and are asked to purchase their own when they have progressed sufficiently. The equipment of the Hobart Band is the finest. School owned in- struments alone are valued at approximately $20,000.00. F inancial oblig- ations are met through three sources — the Hobart Band Mother’s Club, the board of education, and the band fund. The Band Mother’s Club is believed to be the first organization of this kind in the country. Its fame is second only to that of the band itself. Needless to say, the Hobart schools, community, and the Band itself are intensely proud of the Band’s achievements in the music world. It is their hope that in the future as in the past, the Hobart High School Band will continue — a monument of American music education. Ensemble Club The ensemble club exists for the pur- pose of furnishing incidental music by small groups for school and community programs. During the first semester of the school year, membership was limited to four ensembles with the following personnel : Clarinet Quartet Nancy I’yatt Mariellen Jolliff La Verne Veres Maxine Richmond Brass Quartet Dick Mac-kin Jack Worthington Charles Southard Frank Papke Bernadette Griffin-alternate Woodwind Quintet Leona Stadtler Robert Vinzant Ruth Balitz Don Rnzek Dorothy Ittel Sax Quartet Betty Morris Tom Bishop Alice Hellstrom James Shurr Junior Red Cross Helen Albers Ruth Albers Helen Bardash Joe Klug Willetta Klug Eleanor Ledyard Edith Pinner Marlin Pope Rosemary Sable Dorothy Spivey Francis Stewart Gloria Wickman NOT SHOWN: Evelyn Klug Georgia King Sponsor: Edward Huml Irene Krawczyk Joan Mattix Joanne Murphy Beverly Shaw Dolores Sikora Cecil Wunsehel Jewel Wunsehel Janet Jones Ruth Switzer th Martindale International Club Mary Billeaux Thelma Cuson Emily Marvel Marion McKnight Matida Rajkovich Olga Sheperd Joan Steinback Mary Watson Not Shown : Rosemary Florins Maxine Richmond Elaine Hecht Rita Frett Shirley King Maribelle McLead Laurene Owens Jean Turner Joan Turner Geraldine Kasrieh Mary Fossa Eva Thyn Lavonne Pries Sponsor: Helen Holman Librarians Audrey Andrews Margaret Burches Avis Oumbe Blanche Fifield Julia Gawor Phyllis Hansell Donna Lou Kewley Dorothy Kluba Carol Kostbade Lavonne Luellman Myrtle Moehl Lois Mummery Elizabeth Rampke Evelyn Rampke Elaine Reisinger Eileen Smythe Helen Sol Jennie Sol Violet Tatolovich Margaret Trumbo Peggy Wildermuth ot Shown : Cwrine Kinder Donna Kanost Sponsor : E. FOOTBALL SENIORS Calvin Green: End The ’44 varsity team found Cal playing end. This six-feet lad was a real credit to the team. Claude Choate: Half-back Converted from guard to half-back “Orbie” took high scoring honors for the season with 52 points. Walter Moll: Half-back Wally was small but mighty. He was known for his ability to outsmart the opponent. Jack Murray: Fullback “Max” played fullback, a good person in this spot when the team needed a few yards. Jack was also a passer and a punter. David Erwin: Center Dave played center and was also a credit to the fine line that Hobart displayed. Harold Jordon: Quarter-back Under the guidance ' o;f “Dutch” at quarter-back the Brickies were carried to a vic- torious season. GLEN SWANSON Sophomore BOB SCHAVEY BOB HAVRILLA JACK BURKE Junior Sophomore Junior FOOTBALL Coach Jimmy Allen came to Hobart in August; a complete stranger to all the fellows who reported to him on the twentieth day of chat month to start football practice. He became very well liked by the football players because of the remarkable way that he learned and remembered all the fellows’ names. Freshman or senior, an experi- enced player or a scrub, they were all the same to Coach Allen. “Any player that can block can play on my team,” was Allen’s Golden Rule of football. And he did produce fine blockers. Another good quality in football that Coach Allen will be remembered for is his ability to shift players to the spot on the team where they will do the most good. On the field and in school Jimmy Allen is a fine person and a successful coach. COACH ALLEN BILL MERODIAS Sophomore CARL FASEL Sophomore JIM MARCOFF Junior JIM ALEXANE Junior FOOTBALL Back How: Claude Choate, Bob Shavey, Dave Erwin, James Alexander, Jack Burke, Calvin Green, Gor- don Macy, Jack Murray. Middle Rows Coach Allen, Harold Jordan, Robert Green, Bud Mock, Larry Buckreus, Howard Harris, Bob Rosenbaum. Glen Swanson, Carl Fasel, Lindy Moss Front Row : Gregory Strom, Ken Keller, Don Tracy, David Sizemore, Bill Merodias, Bob Havrilla, Walter Moll. Jim Marcoff. Starting the season with a bang, the Hobart Brickies downed Froebel of Gary 13-7. This was the first game of football for many of the Ho-Hi lads so there was many mistakes that had to be corrected. The second game of the season, the Brickies took their worst beating of the season 41-7, at the hands of the LaPorte Slicers. This setback was soon over-come because the following week the Allenmen went wild as they handed Lowell a 48-0 beating that will be re- membered for a long time. Game number four is another game that will be well-remembered by Hobart fans. An undefeated Griffith team underestimated the power of the Brickies and as a result they came out of the game on the short end of a 38-6 score. The Bulldogs of Crown Point proved to be the surprise of the season. Before any member of the Ho-Hi squad could quite eralize that they were losing, the game was over; the score 14-6. The next game was with Coach Allen’s Alma Mater, Jefferson of Lafayette. The Brickies failed to impress the “downstate” boys and lost the game 20-0. The next game, played in the rain on Valpo’s “mud mound,’’ the Vikings held the Brickies to just six points, but that six points was just enough to win the game 6-0. The next game with Hammond Catholic was the hardest fought game of the season. Hobart won the battle 12-6. The last game of the season was with Valparaiso. This game was the second time in the season that the two teams had met. The Brickies won the game 14-6 to prove that they were still one of the outstanding teams of this area. Basketball VARSITY SQUAD Front Row: Bill Mueller “Moose” was there to lend a hand. He served as utility man and played best at guard. Richard Willmoth A hard player was “Hier”. He was al- ways in the midst of the fray, and can never be said to have lain down on the job. His hard work will again be appreciated next year. Walter Moll “Wally” piloted the team with great vigor. He was the hardest fighter and best spirited man on the team. Harold Jordan “Dutch” is a small but mighty player with plenty of speed. He was enough for any group of players, for he was a hard and gritty fighter. Robert Price “Popeye” was in the fight with all his heart. He is considered one of the valuable finds of the season. Harlan Stratton “Stretch” is a hard, earnest worker, and although this was his first year he made a strong position on the team. He is among the juniors. Back Row: Frank Kurth, Coach Thomas Mason “Tom” is one of the most promising ath- letes in HHS for future years. He was a hard and willing worker, afraid of no player. Harold Goodwin “Goosey” served his team well. He was a fast man, not having a year’s experience- to his credit, and was a great aid to his fellow players. This is “Goosey’s” last year with the squad. John Cicillian, Center John was a fighter and put every ounce of energy into his plays, and was rewarded, by a berth on the team. He was a good man and this was also his first year out. Calvin Green “Kow Kow” was a starter and a deadeye for push shots. Draft and injuries kept him from playing all season. Jack Murray “Mex” was a hard man to get for he was quite a deadeye for the basket from distant spots although short shots seemed to harass, him. Lindy Moss, Student Manager RESERVE SQUAD Left to Right: Bob Nuzum, Jay Green, Dave Sizemore, Ralph Zupko, Bud Mock, Dick Wells, Leroy Wineinger, George Luke, Ray Mailer, Kenneth Keller, Bob Green. Minor awards went to Dick Langford, James Springman, Warren Hansell, Charles Bodinger, Bill Crites, Herb Dommer, and Jack Worthington. The Lions Club Trophy was awarded to Richard Willmoth, and the miniature track shoes to Richard Willmoth, Robert Nelson, Bob Price, Bill Garrison, and Buddy Massa. TOMM Y KURTH Tommy has been attend- ing basketball and football gam es since he was six months old. He has been Brickie Mascot going into the locker rooms and Hitting on the player’s bench as their mascot since he was two years old. Track Top Ixrft : Bill Garrison, Hurdler; Top Right; Dick Raiza, Jim Alexander. Jack Murray, Shot-putters; Lowell Knslen, Student Manager; Frank Kurth, Coaoh. Bottom Left : Bob Green, Bob Nelson, Diek Willmoth, Carl Fasel, Bill Cribes, Dick Wells; Relay Team. Bottom Right; Eugene Lundy, Earl Bristol, Bob Havrilla, Jack Worthington, Wally Moll, Jack Murray, Dash Men. The 1943 season of track was true to tradition as the Brickies went through the season with only one defeat at the hands of a strong Gary Roosevelt ' team. This defeat was the first taken by the Ho-Hi Cindermen in three years. The high school trophy-case has swelled during the spring season when the trackmen get under way. Hobart, and only Hobart, has all the trophies that were given in track at Little Five Conference meets. Also in the trophy case is a La Porte Relay plaque, three Knox Relay cups and a Chesterton Relay trophy. The ’43 season found Hobart very near the top in the Gary Sectionals; however they did place four men down state. Ray Ciszek, last year’s high-scorer in track, won state-championship in the quarter-mile. Returning from the 1943 squad are five major lettermen that Coach Kurth is building his hopes upon to produce another championship team. Bob Havrilla, dash-man and broad-jumper, is only a sophomore so Kurth has hopes of building him into a real champion. Bill Garrison, a hurdler, returning from last year’s team will carry out his good work in that event. “Rich” Willmoth, ace middle- distance man, is sure to live up to all expectations. Bob Price, pole vaulter, also returning, will hold his own in his event. Claude Choate, hurdler, runner-up for high scoring honors last year, will be defending his undefeated record in the high hurdles.
