141f'fu4a.7e4wm0wz.S l November 1944 MEMORANDUM TO ALL HANDS: 1. The V-12 Unit of Hobart College is proudly a P1111 of the nation-wide college program of the U. S. Navy in the present war. Stationed on this historic cam- pus along beautiful Lake Seneca, the Unit began its operations 2 june I9-13, with the reporting of the Hrst oflicers and members of the ship's company. The training program, under the prohcient and appreciated instruc- tion of the Hobart Faculty, commenced l July 1943, with the -100 apprentice seamen aboard. 2. l-lerewith presented is a pictorial log of the activi- ties of this Unit. lt is the story of young men who, through discipline and scholarship. are striving for the intellectual adequacy and military character necessary for effective leadership. The pages picture the academic, social, and regimental events which, united into one comprehensive experience, are preparing the trainees for the responsibilities and privileges of naval officers. The book is more than a passing show of current episodes. lt is a permanent token of abiding friendships, of emerging skills and competencies, of patriotic visions and heroic ideals. 3. The gratitude of the officers and men of this Unit is extended to the Executive Ofhcer, Lieutenant Lee Francis Lybarger. Jr.. U.S.N.R.. who planned and edited this publication and directed its photographic work. Further appreciation is extended to lVilliam C. Obert, Y2c, U.S.N.R., and Eugene Witkowski, A.S., U.S.N.R.. for their assistance in the project. Grateful acknowledgment is made to Commodore Harry A. Badt, U.S.N.. Commander, U. S. Naval Training Center, Sampson, New York, for the use of official Navy photographs tpages 44, 45. 46, 473 which were taken by the Public Relations Department of the Center at two connnencement exercises of this Unit. Sincere thanks are also given to the Public Relations Office of Hobart College for the use of its darkroom. To the entire personnel of the Unit commendation is expressed for manifesting in all the events. which are portrayed in this book, the spirit of loyalty and cooperation which always characterizes a taut and happy ship.
