Became director of the Smith Observatory in 1888- Discoverer of twenty-two comets, the first one on Oct. 21, 1881, the twenty-second on July 23, 1900. Winner of ten Warner Gold Prizes for cometary discoveries. Seven medals from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, Lick Observator}'.
