Front row, L-R: yle Dougal, Dale Foltz, Coach, James Dean, Ed Taylor, Bob Thompson. For the 1957-58 season, the Hoaglin-Jackson Varsity team has won their first league crown since 939. The league standings were very close all through the season and reached an exciting climax 'ith a very hard earned victory in the last game of the regular seasan at Convoy. Danny Thatcher led the county in batting average which was .649. Out of this he hit 4 home- ms, 2 triples, and a double. He also was highest in runs-batted-in. Danny's hitting was a great lspiration to the rest of the team. We were very proud of the team's accomplishment and would like to thank Mr. Dean for his ex- glent job of coaching. SPEECH The speech Class, this year, are learning the proper ways of giving speeches, discussions, an debates which calls for research. They found out that listening was just as good a policy as speak ing. It has opened many fields of interest to them. Mr. Avery played speech records for the clas and had the tape recorder for the speeches. The Seniors found out that giving speeches helps to create poise and enhances the ability to spea fluently in front of large groups of people. SOCIAL STUDIES The classes in the social studies department are Ohio history, World History, and Democracy The eighth grade obtained a new series of Ohio History books. The Democracy class received nev books with up-to-date information. Each class of the social stuudies department has a project for the year, either of making maps oi reports on historical books. Mr. Davis would like to take the Juniors and Seniors on a field trip either to a trial or some state affiliated institution. The Juniors and Seniors are taking Democracy this year and are learning the principals of how our government is run.
