X It SCHOOL BOARD The school board has worked hard This year in solving The many problems. Their main project was the expansion of The school building, which Took many late hours of planning. The expansion included Tour new grade rooms, which were in use by the latter part of December. A north wing is also being added, but it will not be used until next fall. Work was started in March To remodel and enlarge The gym. Shown above are The members. Left To right: Mr. Scheumann, Mr. Berning, Trustee of Marion Township, and also Treasurer of the board, Mr. Lybarger, President, Mr. Reynolds, Trustee of Madison Township, and also Secretary of the board, and Mr. Scherer. SECRETARY I lost my pen, did you see it? HMaY I borrow your stapler? These are only the small prob- lems with which Mrs. Dorothy Holle, Secretary, helps us. She is always ready To help both stu- dent and faculty members. PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE .gf . TO THE SENIORS OF 1957 The sands of time run through the hour glass in a never ending stream. An eventful hour was checked on September 4, 1956-8:10 A.M., when the Class of 1957 started on the last mile of its high school career on which the sands of time will run out at 8:30 P.M., May 13, 1957. Now again, soon, it will be time for each of you to start the hour glass on another iourney-that iourney of living in this world that we live in with the sands running out in success or failure- happiness or sadness-acceptance or reiection, by standards set by society and yourselves. Your teachers over the past 12 years have endeavored to train each of you to be ready for this iourney and its responsibilities through education. As your Principal, I believe education is the essence of the democratic hope and that education keeps alive the aspirations of every person that he and his children will have an opportunity to improve his lot. I also believe that education is the substance of freedom-the inquiring mind-the searching spirit-the quest for new frontiers-all these are the basic forces for freedom. With integrity and honesty as watchwords, the search for truth is ever to be encouraged. I believe that educa- tion is the means of the individual's cultural and spiritual fulfillment. Man does not live by bread alone but through the cultivation of his fellow men and deeper devotion to his God. I believe every student has a creative spark and the development of this spark is your most sacred task. This spark makes you truly human-gives continuity to existence and gives hope for the future. Ultimately man remains a secret to him- self. Man sees himself only in manifestations, not as an essence. Perhaps this spark indicates that nothing is impossible if each of you Seniors will have the necessary patience and intelligence to face the iourney you are about to start. I wish to congratulate you for such a fine iob done on this yearbook. May it in the future bring back the fond memories of your iourney through Madison-Marion Consolidated School. With kindest personal regards and best wishes for everything that is good and honorable to each of you in the SENIOR CLASS of 1957. I remain- Your Friend Maze-Law VINCENT R. GUENTHER, Principal ? The class elected as a most capable and efficient spon- sor, Mr. Justice, who advised the class in its many problems. As has been the custom in years past to take a trip to New York and Washington, the '57 class also looked forward to its trip with much enthusiasm. To finance the trip, all the members worked on such projects as selling concessions, working on a scrap drive, working at a bake sale or car wash, plus other proiects, Yes, the Senior Class has experienced both work and fun in its iourney through high school and to them these experiences will remain moments to remember. x ai LYNDA KOEHLINGER DeDe Cheerleader l, 3, Glee Club 2, 3, 4, Booster Club 2, 4, Maiorette 2, Octet 3, Y-Teens 3, , it K x Sz, any 1 pf' NORBERT SCHROEDER Norb FFA 1, 2, 3, 4, Track 1, 2, Ha-Y 2, Play 4, Student Council 4, Octet 4, Glee Club 4. They have a record thus far of 13 wins and 6 losses which is quite good by anyone's standards. It is, in fact, one of the best records a Hoagland team has had for quite a number of years. They played two games in the County Tourna- ment, the first when they defeated the Woodburn Warriors in the opening game of the tournament by a score of 65-55. The other game was with the Leo Lions who had beaten them during the regular season by a score of 95-83. Leo was chosen the winner of this second match by a score of 59-57, and later went on to win the tournament. There are thre Seniors on the basketball team, they are: Grotrian, Guenin, and Zelt, who helped a lot in bringing Hoagland its many vic- tories. The Reserve Squad had a reasonably good season also. They have a record of 9 wins and 8 losses. At the beginning ofthe season they seemed to lack experience, but they learned rather quickly and have really improved since the beginning of the year. BOOSTER CLUB At the time pictures were taken for the yearbook the Booster Club had not been organized. Nevertheless, the Booster Club was well organized by the time the Sectional Tournament was here. Mrs. Macklin was the faculty advisor for this group, which was comprised of I 14 high school students, boys as well as girls. All Booster Club members purchased hats of blue and white before the Sectional so that our colors might be displayed in our cheering block of white with a blue H.
