We were young and wild and free. Now nothin ' can take you away from me. We ' ve been down that road before, But that ' s over now. You keep me cornin ' back for more. ' Cause baby you ' re all that I want When I ' m lyin ' here in your arms. I ' m findin ' it hard to believe We ' re in Heaven. ' Cause love is all that I need And I found it there in your heart. It isn ' t so hard to see We ' re in Heaven. Oh, once in your life you find someone Who will turn your world around; Bring you up when you ' re feelin ' down. Yeah, nothin ' can change what you mean to me. There ' s lots that I can say, But just hold me now ' Cause our love will light the way. I ' ve been waitin ' for so long For somethin ' to arrive. Now my dreams are cornin ' true. And I ' m standin ' there by you. by Bryan Adams mes at Hiwassee anning the globe, or at least most of the Southeastern ted States, the campus of Hiwassee College weds the styles of many individuals into a conglomerate often refer- ©as the Hiwassee Spirit. Although this a collective feel- it is expressed in many and varied ways. It is often said experiencing two years at Hiwassee will give one the feel¬ ing of acquiring a new family. The casual times spent on the campus are the times related with relish to grandchildren on snowy winter evenings. From the first graduating class to the Class of ' 85 each individual can say they have spent two of the best years of their lives here. The Hiwassee Spirit will live with us till death. At the newly erected B. D. Benton Bell Tower a crowd of teachers, students and well-wishers assembled for the event. As the Hiwassee Choral sang, the teachers and faculty paraded on to the grounds of the quadrangle in their caps and gowns of various colors. Bishop Eustler of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church spoke on church education after which Glen Rapking, Chairman of the Board of Governors, swore in Dr. Schofield. The Certificate of Investiture was then presented to Dr. Schofield by Penny Mathis. In his address to the crowd President Schofield expressed his commitment to Hiwassee College: We must continue the Hiwassee spirit. .. To our new president, on behalf of the students, faculty and staff, pledge our loyalty and look forward to a future brightened by your wisdom . . Penny Mathis presents the Investiture Certificate. Although you may acquire many friends at Hiwassee, your closest one will always be your roomate. You will be invited to join many clubs. The drama club overwhelmed everyone with its version of The 3 Musketeers while the choir left everybody wanting more as they per¬ formed on and off campus. The year was filled with many exciting dances and ball games, the highpoint of which was the Homecoming game. 126 The Sophomores kept busy raising money to fund their trip to Daytona Beach Awards day is set aside to honor those students who proved to be outstanding i their class. These students should be commended for their hard work and dedica tion. Graduation is filled with tears and smiles as sophomores realize it is time t move on. Although they will be going in different directions, they will always hav the Hiwassee spirit to keep them together. 12 A Closing Thought Once upon a time the people in a certain country heard a mighty rumbling in a near-by mountain. Smoke was pouring from the summit, the earth began to trem¬ ble, and massive rocks broke loose ana rolled down into the valley. The mountain seemed to be in labor, and all the people of the country rushed out to see what ter¬ rible thing was about to happen. The people waited ana watched, watched and waited, while the sky grew darker and the rumblings got louder. Finally, as everyone watched, there was one more earthquake more violent than all the others. A huee fissure suddenly ap¬ peared in the side of the mountain. Some people fell to their knees while others tainted. All the rest waited to see what would happen next. The rumbling and thundering stopped and silence fell all across the land. Then, as all the people watched, out of the gap in the side of the mountain popped a tiny mouse. Application: Magnificent promises sometimes end in paltry performances. Such was the case with the 1985 yearbook, only some would even question whether even a ' mouse appeared. Again and again promises were made that work on the book was being done and would be completed. In the end, though, the 1985-86 yearbook staff was left with responsibility to try to complete the y 85 yearbook as well as do a good job and stay on schedule with the 1986 edition. This 1985 Hiwassee was produced witn many mixed feelings on the part of the staff. Some who were on the original ' 84- ' 85 staff had to fight feelings of having been betrayed by the rest of the staff. They were not around to hear the question, When are our yearbooks coming? , repeated again and again and again. Con¬ cerns were also raised that the ' 85 book not impair the production of a good 1986 edition. As a personal note in closing, I feel I am speaking for the entire staff when I say that we have faced a tremendous task in producing this yearbook. The book falls far short of the standards we have set for the 1986 edition. It is hoped that the pic¬ tures, even though they would have been so much better with more captions and copy, will provide a book of memories for the class of 1985. To them we have I dedicated our efforts. Jeff Litton, Editor 1986 Hiwassee
