I had little acquintances with some parts of VA by going with a friend of mine on weekends. At the beginning of the Fall quarter, when all the freshman arrived at Hiwassee, one day I was sitting by myself at the Cafeteria. This girl, a freshman came with her plate and asked if she could sit with me. Sure, I said. As we continued eating, she asked what my name was. When I told her my name, she quickly asked where I came from? I felt something as a result of her quick request. From VA, I said. Where at in VA? Duffild. VA. How come you talk funny? Most people in VA talk funny, was my reply. Are there any of you who does the same thing again and again? Do not feel bad. I am like you. For the last four years I have been doing the same thing again and again I left home for survival reasons. Ever since I left home I would stay in a country for a while and leave after I made home and friends. For the last two years Hiwassee has been my home When everyone would leave on weekends, I would stay at Hiwassee by myself and still feel at home. It was hard to begin with, but slowely I started to aquint myself with the building, trees and animals around me. I started to love staying by myself at Hiwassee I would sit and talk to all my families, friends and the people I know. Slowely I started to make friends and soon life at Hiwassee became great. It never came to my mind that this hour would come and cut me off from my home and all the people I love. Friends, you know how much it hurts. I had a plan not to see you before I leave. I am going to keep your letters as long as I can. While everyone of you is going home. I am leaving home. Hiwassee is my home. For the next person who asks where I came from. Hiwassee is my reply. Friends, our friendship needs to be kept in constant repair When we are separated we loss the advantage and pleasure of our communication, and if our separation lasts for a long time, we lose each other. No one stays the same person all his life. His ideas and feelings change for better or for worse. Please let us keep in contact. At least let us come for homecoming. I will try to write you all. and promise to replay your letters. Thank you for being my friends. Thank you Hiwassee. God Bless You. I Love You All. A variety of programs are planned for each of these services. These programs vary from mini-concerts and choir performances to skits and preaching services. Also held from time to time are assembly programs. One such program held this year was the slave auction which was sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. 92 91 During the Fall Quarter, the band. SWEETWATER, came to Hiwassee and gave a magnifi¬ cent performance. They enter¬ tained by singing a big variety of songs that really moved the audi¬ ence. There were people in the crowd who were up singing and dancing right along with the band. They truly are a great group and have many fans here at Hiwassee. Sweetwater 94 Another night of entertainment was provided by a gospel group known as The Inspirations. They also put on a good show by singing several different religious selec¬ tions and by putting their all into the songs. Being a very talent ed group, they can communicate with their audi¬ ences really well and Hiwassee is no exception. The Inspirations 9! Hiwassee ' s fall production, Story Theatre, was directed by Dr. ' Bookie ' Stiles and Mr. Joe Lowry. It was a comedy version of ten tales and fables by the brothers Grimmand Aesop. The cast was excellent at keeping the attention of the audience while at the same time staying in control of the material. Hiwassee can be very proud of its talented comedians. “Story Theatre” 96 Theatre Hiwassee ' s spring presentation this year proved to be a tremendous success. Damn Yankees” was acted by extremely talented actors who enjoyed themselves while on stage. This feeling was conveyed to the audience which made the play even better. Damn Yankees” was a top-notch play which can be credited to the talented cast and excellent directors. “Damn Yankees” 97 9a This year the Sophomore Class spon¬ sored a spectacular show which was given by the Bucketeers, a very skilled basketball team. They played a game which displayed their talent as well as their sense of humor. Meadowlark Lemon, formerly of the Harlem Globe¬ trotters, is the ring leader of this great team. All who were there enjoyed the show immensely. The Bucketeers 100 Homecoming Week 1982 % { j i o Home coming Week 1982 was filled with many exciting activities. These activities helped build spirit and enthusiasm for the Home¬ coming basketball game which took place at the end of the week. The major event was the dorm decoration competition. The dormi¬ tories were each decorated very festively which made the com¬ petition very close. In the end. Brock Hall took home the trophy. Pictured are just a few of the fun-filled moments during Homecom¬ ing Week 1982. On Saturday, March 19th, Hiwas- see ' s Choir left for their 1983 Spring Tour. They traveled through East Ten¬ nessee, Southwestern Virginia, and Western North Carolina. Their stops in¬ cluded several different schools and churches as well as a visit to Biltmore House and Gardens in Ashville. North Carolina. The 1983 tour was a big suc¬ cess for the singers as well as their au¬ diences as they gave their all to please them. 102 1983 Choir Tour 104 1983 Spring Formal A night to remember. It was on Saturday night. May 14th. that Hiwassee held its Spring Formal, possibly the best social event this college has for the entire year. Everyone was all decked out in his or her finest garments. It was a great time to be at the Airport Hilton in Alcoa, Tennessee which is where the event took place. All who were there will never forget the outstanding Spring Formal of 1983. i 106 Penthip displays her talent during the competition. Beauty, poise, and talent, That is what it takes to be selected as Miss Hiwassee. Chosen out of twenty beautiful contestants, Miss Connie Kennedy, was crowned Miss Hiwassee 1983. Last year ' s queen. Miss Chihiro Yorita, crowned the new queen. Miss Melanie Tindell was chosen as the first runner-up and Miss Scarlett Hunt was chosen as the second runner-up. Among our distinguished judges was Mr. Carl Williams of WBIR-TV. The host and hostess for the evening were Mr. Larry Dial and Dr. Bookie Stiles. Both are members of the faculty here at Hiwassee. During the intermission, the audience was entertained by the Armfield Dance Academy. A special thanks to Roger Hill for all his help and patience. I would especially like to thank the yearbook staff for all their work and their help. The two years I spent at Hiwassee were a time of growing and meeting new friends. These years were filled with laughter and tears, good and bad times.
